pretty boring episode, especially considering the reviews suggested the first 2 were by far the slowest. Dont think anyone died tonight, though i really thought the ranger guy (the friend of the starks) going north of the wall was going to get whacked.

What is the profession or role of the guy who played mayor carcetti in "the wire"?

His nickname is littlefinger, name is Petyr Baelish (spelling?). He is pretty much the treasurer or the kingdom or master of coin. He is part of the king's council which you saw this episode.

Didn't take too long for Danaeres to realize she is more powerful than her idiot brother now that she has an army at her back. Definitely can see him having a temper tantrum about being worthless and wanting to be king soon in front of the wrong person pretty soon.

So many great characters so far. I think Arya, Jon Snow, and the imp are my favorites.

loved this episode. as a reader, i realized going into this series that the pacing and scene-ordering would likely be a bit jarring just because of the amount of storylines and locales, but so far they're handling that very well.

Dany and the dothraki, in particular, are really growing on me. the dude playing Ser Jorah is absolutely nailing it, and i loved the scene with him and the Dothraki comparing their weapons. they're fleshing out the dothraki way more than i had expected, and it's fun to watch. oh and viserys getting put in his place by his sister and Jhogo (i think that was the dothraki with the whip) was awesome

so much else to say, but in general the only weakness of the episode was probably the ordering of scenes and the general feel of time passing...it's just not made very clear, and i could see how a non-reader could get confused. but i also feel like this week's episode took us to the top of of the proverbial roller coaster, and from here on out it's going to be a wild ride (which is a lot similar to the book)

oh and i had a sheet-eating grin on my face during the Syrio/Arya scene at the end. for all of the added scenes and for-TV modifications, that scenes felt like it was lifted straight from the text and just spliced into what they had filmed. so awesome!

pumped for next week!

Not the action packed episode that some people are always looking for, but I thought this was a great set-up episode. Introduced some new key characters, went a little bit deeper with a few others (Uncle Benjen, Jon Snow, the broad sword guy with the horse soldiers, the kings treasurer, etc.)

It was good for what it was supposed to be.

I've heard/read multiple people refer to Arya being one of their favorite characters. I'm really looking forward to what she becomes that causes them to feel this way. Guessing that I'm going to have to wait a while, but still looking forward to it.

Absolutely loving this show. Got turned on to it by a colleague who had read the books. I have not, and probably won't read them so I can watch this as a standalone product.

The Arya character is definitely intriguing. The ending last night was so good... the foreshadowing from the imagery in Sean Bean's mind was unmistakable. Girl's gonna be huge.

I think this was the last 'normal' episode. As someone else said, you're at the top of the roller coaster now and about to enjoy the real ride.

I just hope that now that Bran is paralyzed that they don't do something dumb and have him riding all over the place on his dire wolf like the Neverending Story!

First porn I saw was a brother/sister incest romp and all I got were these bum legs and huge ass wolf to carry my lame ass around. YEEEAHHHHH!!!!!!

After reading the first book and 1/3 of the second, Arya's point of view is one of the ones I look forward to most. She is a courageous and entertaining little terd lol. Definitely in my top 3 favorite characters so far. I like the starks (and snow) in general and Dany.

I'm halfway into the first book, and so far I've gravitated towards Arya, Jon Snow, and Tyrion.

Some people I absolutely can't STAND are Catelyn's sister (name escapes me), and the obvious...Cersei, Jaime, & Viserys.

i just finished book 1 and am working on 2. it didnt take me a whole lot to get into this, but i've successfully gotten my wife to enjoy it - last night she referred to our dog as our "little direwolf". success.

i wonder how many dog owners have done the same over the last few weeks.

I gave it 3 episodes, and now I'm bailing. It's well produced, cosistent with the expected HBO level of quality, but I'm just not a fantasy kind of guy. It very well could end up being one I come back to at some point(I gave up on True Blood before coming back-mostly because it airs in the summer abyss when nothing else is on), but I just can't get into it at this point.

Honestly, if I werent reading the books it might seem slow to me. This has so many story lines going on at once that I think it would be better to watch a marathon rather than wait week to week. I would give it a try again once you can watch them all one after the other.

Give it at least 6 or 7 episodes to grow on you. The first three are still just establishing the characters and setting up the plot. It's about to get a whole lot more interesting.

If you're a fan, I'd also strongly recommend doing a little reading about Medieval history if you don't know much about it. GRRM did his homework; the world he created is very realistically feudal. It helps to understand how the system worked and how the people in it think.

speaking of midieval history, the setting in a lot of ways reminds me of Englands history (which I heard the writer semi based the setting on).

Westeros roughly looks like England in its shape (Kingslanding even being located roughly where London would be). The wall of ice in the north seems like a homage to Hadrians wall. And England has a long history of being invaded and reinvaded time and again from across the sea. (clearly those dothraki are french, amiright? jk)

As a guy who loves his history, those are some neat little parallels.

Yes, I liked that ending scene.

Episode 4 will be Lift-Off...

If one desires, then go to IMDB and scout out Ep4.

I would give it one more episode. The next one should get everything kicked off nicely.

I didn't like fantasy either until I read A Game of Thrones by George RR Martin.

It's closer to War of the Roses type historical fiction then the usual fantasy which is why I think many non-fantasy people like it.

Arya is such a little badass!! After dad describes the perfect princess' life that awaits her, she looks him straight in the eye and says "nah - that's not me".

Then goes back to her fighting drils.

Awesome.

a lot of really cool stuff in this episode!

one surprising thing that the show is doing is making some of the flat, throw-away characters from the books much more complex and sympathetic. Jory (the long-haired guy who serves Ned) and Ser Alliser Thorne in particular are being portrayed awesomely

the table-scrubbing scene with Jon/Sam/Thorne was absolute nails, one of my favorite scenes thus far

next week will be far more action-y, which i'm excited to see!
