7 eps in and while I enjoy it, it just hasn't made me jizz on my pants like everyone on this board.

I mean I was hooked on Breaking Bad after 10 minutes.

Does it pick up?

Slow burn my friend... One day you'll just realize how hooked you are and how great it is. But there will not be a scene or episode that turns on the switch for you... Although Omar in court is pretty close. One of the things that makes it great is the shift in story arc and characters every season. It's really cool and well done in that sense.

It's like a great novel. Once you're done you keep reflecting and realize what you just read/watched is a masterpiece.

Maybe OP is waiting for the 'nude scene' early in Season 2.

But yeah, seven episodes in and you aren't feeling it, is not a good sign.

Maybe 'MASH' or 'ALF' on Netflix . . .?

I didn't really appreciate it until season 2 when McNulty died.

Yeah that spoiler sucked. If you are in college station let me know where we can meet so I can ***** slap you.

I know McNulty doesn't die because I accidentally watched an episode of season 5 the other night.

I quit the wire after season 1. Did not care for it.

Now I just started watching Breaking Bad again and finished season 2 last night. Pretty awesome having John De Lancie on the show for a little bit and am pumped Bob Odenkirk is now a regular.

I didn't really start to love The Wire until season 2. Season 1 in my opinion is arguably the weakest, although it's obviously really important for setting up characters and stories.

I would give it another shot. There's a reason pretty much everyone agrees it's the greatest show ever.

As it's been often stated, The Wire is structured like a novel. The first season is like the first 100 pages of a book. It sets up the premise, gets you accustomed to the characters, and is generally slower until all those elements established early on begin coming together in the following seasons. You have to have patience let it develop, learn who all the characters are and how they relate to one another, and start to take in the overall themes being conveyed. Lots of literary elements and strategies are used in The Wire.

To use a Season 1 reference, most shows play checkers while The Wire plays chess. It takes a while to set up the pieces before they begin to fall instead of consistant action and cliffhangers like most shows. I don't blame anyone who doesn't like it though. It's a specific type of show for people with specific types of tastes. Like Mad Men, you have to appreciate slower paced dramas. It's my favorite show ever though and envy anyone getting to watch it for the first time.

Just started watching The Wire as well on HBO go. It seems slow, but I do find it to be an ok show, just not as great a show as I was expecting. Just started season 2 last week, so looking forward to it getting better.

The Wire should not be judged on individual episodes. It may be one of the only shows, of not the only show to not have an iconic episode. The best way to look it is a one giant episode/story.

You can't adequately judge The Wire on one episode or even one season for that matter. A show of this quality/depth requires full viewing before judgement. It's not like other shows and because so, it is the greatest show.

The only other show I can think of where judging it on only a portion of its story arc will do you a complete disservice is Arrested Development. Don't cheat yourself. Watch all of it.

I watched season 1 of The Wire and while I thought it was decent, it didn't really draw me in enough so I gave up on it. I LOVE The Sopranos and so The Wire was a little disappointing for me considering the hype.

watched it in its entirety for the first time a few years ago. Best show i've ever seen all the way through.

Watching it through for the 2nd time right now. I'm towards the end of season 3. Just as awesome as it was the first time, and I'm finding new-found appreciation/hatred for characters that was different from my first time through.

Watch through the final scene of S1E10 and beginning of S1E11 and tell me that's not one of the most intense scenes you've ever seen on television.

I phrased it like that because I didn't want to spoil anything.

But what do I know...I'm just a...

It took me 7-8 eps of Season 1 before I was hooked. Didn't understand all of the critical love for the show. Found the dialogue hard to follow. However, Glad I stuck with it. Great show and one of my all time favorites. Loved S4 the most.

I'm 4 or 5 episodes into the 2nd season, and I believe that the show is a little overrated. Although I thoroughly enjoy the show and agree that it's still in the top tier of shows, it's not even in the conversation of "the best show of all time."

I think part of the problem is that I'm watching it AFTER watching Breaking Bad and Mad Men for the past 4 years. Had I watched it when it first came out, I may have thought it was the greatest show of all time...because it might have been back then. The only stuff you really had to compare it to back then was Law & Order and maybe The Sopranos.

If I had to rank it with all the shows that exist today, I'd probably put it somewhere around the level of Sons of Anarchy. That's a tremendous complement, but it's still not even close to Breaking Bad (which is #1 by a mile).

You also have to keep in mind that I haven't yet seen the entire body of work which I realize is necessary to properly rate the show...especially with this show apparently.

I've also found watching shows when they originally air when you have to wait an entire week before each episode makes them more interesting. The anticipation, speculation, suspense, and emotion in general are much greater when you have to wait for the next episode, especially when you get to discuss it with other fans for an entire week. When I have to wait a week, I find myself watching shows 2 or 3 times throughout that week which helps me catch things I missed and be more aware of the subtle nuances and critically analyze the show better...making me truly appreciate the show more.

Once I've finished the final season, I'll see how my opinion has changed. But as of right now, I just don't think it's in my top 10 of all time (although it's not far off).

Read Sepinwall's reviews on the episodes as you watch it. They bring a lot of minor details to light and help you keep track of all their characters an their relevance.

Just be careful which set of his reviews you look at because I believe he did a second round of reviews the second time he watched the The Wire with spoilers.

Law and Order? **pffft** The Shield was running at the same time as The Wire.

i started season 2 today...i was actually a little taken aback by the first episode, a ton of new characters. i guess i'd gotten attached to all the "bad guys" in s1, is there a lot of continuity throughout the series or does it shift drastically in every season?

The show gets better as you get into it. My wife and I gave up the first time we started to watch the series. Then our sons convinced us we needed to watch the whole thing. I'm glad we did. It's very good. Not the best series ever like some people claim, but still good nonetheless.........

In my opinion the wire seasons from best to worst are 3,4,2,1 then the train wreck known as 5.
