Can someone explain the impact of using all of the different film types / sizes?

my favorite movie maker, can't wait.

I believe it is similar to still photography in that larger film gives a more detailed, beautiful image with a better scale and scope.

And from what I've read, 70mm film isn't really 70mm, it's actually 65mm for the image and 5mm for the sound. Still, I would imagine that makes for a much better, clearer picture than 35mm.

Problem is, there needs to be a 70mm projector for you to actually watch it in 70mm, otherwise it's either digitized or scaled down to 35mm.

Wonder if there's a list where I can see which theaters have one.

70mm IMAX theaters show (15/70 mm). Luckily Lincoln Square is my IMAX of choice in Manhattan, so I'm set.

Most of the ones in Texas are in museums. Marq'e in Houston and Rivercenter in SA look to be the best options.

Come to think of it, 15/70mm IMAX film is not the same film Tarantino is filming in. IMAX film has a more boxy dimension. So 15/70mm theaters may not have the capability to project it.



Hopefully a film expert can clear this up.

i believe 70mm film and imax are the same film stock, but imax film is run through horizontally rather than vertical to get a "taller" aspect ratio.

The larger the film frame or film sensor, the shallower the depth of field will be in the picture. Shallow depth of field is what gives you cinematic look. If you take video on your phone, it has a tiny sensor and just about everything is in focus. Lens selection also determines DOF. The longer the lens, the shallower the DOF.

Shooting 65 or 70 gives you an insanely shallow DOF and you will need a very experienced 1st AC to pull focus. Although he could not say it, I believe Ari Robbins is one of the steadicam operators for H8. He posted a picture of him doing camera tests on facebook saying it was the heaviest camera he has ever flown on his rig and has to use a prototype G70X steadicam arm to support the weight.

how does the size of the sensor/film stock compare to larger aperatures in making DOF shallower?

The larger the aperture, the more light enters the lens allowing for a larger DOF. I would think you would need a top 10 1st AC to pull focus on a wide open lens on 70mm film or a RED Dragon full frame sensor.

That slate is massive. And why would they use a dumb slate when jamming time code makes the assistant editor's job so much easier?

Tells me that they posed the picture for the sole purpose of giving the fans something. Would explain why it is so unnecessarily large.

I currently have the trailer hitting with either Entourage (6/5) or Southpaw (7/29), but now that this cover has dropped (official images are sometimes an indication that a trailer is right around the corner), I could also see there potentially being one with Mad Max next weekend.
