Veering well off topic here, but I thought The Acolyte was actually the complete opposite issue.

Whatever their intention, there was FAR more discussion around their comments/politics/viewpoints than there were issues about the viewpoints or content of the show (and some of that was admittedly due to comments the showrunner and others made). The show just wasn't good.

There's been talk of a Midnight Sons movie for years now that would apparently see Blade, Werewolf by Night, Moon Knight, Black Knight (Kit Harrington in Eternals), a new Ghost Rider and others team up. No idea how real or far along it is, but rumors from credible-enough sources have persisted for a while now.

Since Deadpool and Wolverine was a successful Rated R film, could we see a rated R Ghost Rider?

That would be my guess. Also, the Ryan Gosling rumors of him potentially taking on the role are starting to feel like they might actually have some traction. Point being, with a star of his caliber (and thus the audience he would garner) they could theoretically take more risks with the rating.

Oh I agreed the show was crap from a production stand point. Dialogue, story, acting, directing....for the most part crap. But looking add it in hindsight, it's clear to me that their politics weren't restricted to "outside the workplace", if you will. I feel like one of the definite goals of the show itself was to make statements about gender and politics. Just my opinion though.

I think the real problem is the media ecosystem we find ourselves in is BROKEN.

Its not just enough to make a TV show or movie. You have to go out and promote it ad naseum on any platform you can, and that requires talking about it a lot, and trying to come up with interesting things to say about the project that continue to break through and make news. In the 90s, actors would do magazine articles that basically just pump up the excitement ("fans are going to love what we have done", "people won't believe the stunts", etc.), then go on late night to promote the movie, show a clip, and tell funny stories about production or about something unrelated to endear themselves to the audience.

NOW, you have to go on podcasts, do QAs, go to conventions, on and on. And these actors get asked questions and put on the spot and they say dumb things. Then those dumb things become a lens through which people see the content and its hard to go back from that, because the things some people love, other people hate, etc.

I have found the approach that works for me is that I watch a trailer, if the story seems interesting, or if I like the filmmakers or actors involved, I will give anything a chance. Ignore the talk around the movie, because its ALL trying to get people to pay attention to the actually show or movie. I try to judge the content on its own without all the noise because the noise is always dumb.

An example of this, that still annoys me but that isn't political, is when the focus is on the actors transformation. What their diet was. How they stayed in character, etc. That stuff is all dumb too. Its just not political so it doesn't set people off as much. But its coming from the same issue of having to talk about a project too much and trying to come up with stuff to talk about that breaks through and stays in the headlines.

And the answer Mackie gives just proves how he himself hasn't been paying attention to the themes of the film series he is now the star of. So....maybe that should be the conversation? Not the politics of his answer.

I was with you until the very end. Excellent point about there simply being far too much promotion, and that we're requiring far too much time of, and far too many words from, these actors. It's become ridiculous in that regard.

That said, again, I would argue that Mackie HAS been paying attention and that the point he was trying to make is exactly in line with what the Evans iteration of the character had become, i.e. someone who had moved past the rah rah 'Merica vibes and was, in fact, actively distrustful of the government. Again, yes, America and the government are two different things, but Mackie was basically just saying that honor, dignity, integrity, etc can be universal symbols as well, that aren't exclusive to America.

To your point, they're unfairly asking him to sell this movie all over the globe, for weeks on end, so I get him trying make it sound more accessible to the rest of the world as well. Like you said, though, he's not well enough trained to handle all this volume/tight-rope-walking, which inevitably leads to gaffs like this.

Why wouldn't the studios -- who have millions of dollars invested in a film -- not properly media train their actors prior to sending them out on a publicity tour?

"Here's some questions you are likely to get, and here's some messaging that you should use when you get these types of questions. Oh and by the way, avoid these potential minefields because it could create a backlash."

If anyone should be able to follow a script, it's an actor.

Right. The tension has been how does Captain America embody, what was heretofore seen as "American values" of honor, integrity, service, sacrifice, in a country where the government has seemingly given those up. They are obviously not exclusively American values, but the rub that people have is that when someone said "American values" in the past, those were on the list of things and it was understood. So the way he talked about it as NOT being American just came off as bad.

And I agree, this is also the problem Hollywood is encountering. They make so much money overseas now, and have to cater to those audiences that they are starting to alienate their US audiences. Its definitely a business decision, and maybe a necessary one given the reality of the BO these days, but they need to figure out how to navigate that better.

IDK, but he's got some Paul Rudd in him. He looks the same as he did 10+ years ago.

Lol... Mackey saying Cap is supposed to exemplify values that the rest of the world would all agree with? That is the most ignorant statement I could expect.

The Evans Cap definitely stood for the old school American values of the greatest generation, which I would say are classic American Values. Hell, he rejected globalism and instead fought for his individuality. They did such a great job with his character over what? 6-7 movies? And never had to be ham-fisted with any of it.

Now there's this? Looks like I will be continuing my refusal to give Marvel any more of my money.

As I've always said, at the end of the day, we always have Phases 1-3. Until someone pulls off a Reeves and does a standalone move to reground one of these characters, the MCU jumped the shark a long time ago.

Mackie wishes he could be as anti-government as Evans.

One delivered a strongly worded lecture and the other blew their helicarriers out of the sky

I only read some of the cancer that occurred on the last couple of pages, but Captain America, to me, is supposed to represent what America is supposed to be, not what it actually is. I took Mackie's quote as him not wanting the character to represent what America actually and currently is.

Quote:

It's about a man who keeps his word, who has honor, dignity, and integrity. Someone who is trustworthy and dependable.

Things we like to think we are, whether as American individuals or America as a whole.

Also, comic characters are some of the most political characters in fiction. I would even argue they are the most political characters in fiction. It just becomes a problem to the consumer when it is opposite of what they believe, for better or worse. Artists use art to portray what they believe in. It's just their product is more visible than most of our products.

I think actors, musicians, athletes, etc should just keep their mouth shut on political issues, no matter which way they lean. Why make a comment and piss off half the country? Like Michael Jordan said, "Republicans buy sneakers too."

Be like Mike.

Quoting for those in the back. Just act, make great music, enjoyable movies, and leave the politics aside

Agreed. There used to be a time in Hollywood that the stars were protected from the public. Being accesssible like this is a double edged sword.

GMA seems like an odd target demographic for the first trailer. I'm sure one or more of the actors will be on the show, but still.

Good Morning America airs on ABC.

ABC is owned by Disney, the latter of which obviously also owns Marvel Studios.

It's company/brand synergy.

Not to mention, Jimmy Kimmel Live (also on ABC), where certain Marvel trailers have debuted in the past, isn't airing this coming week.

Regardless, the Tuesday trailer debut is in advance of The Fantastic Four: First Steps Super Bowl spot that will air next Sunday, which will likely be a shortened version of the trailer. Seeing as the Super Bowl this year is on Fox, though, a Tuesday ABC premiere ensures eyes will be on a Disney-owned channel first, then the shortened, 30-spot will air in front of 100+ million people a few days later.

It's the best of both worlds.
Sea Speed

Sure, brand synergy. But good morning America? The eyeballs on that show aren't really the target demo for marvel.
TCTTS
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Did you stop reading halfway through my post?

The SUPER BOWL is five days later, where the target demo - along with the rest of the world - WILL be watching.

That's really all that matters.

The Good Morning America thing is basically a preview/consolation prize.

Look at this way. Disney can either...

A) debut a 30-second spot at the Super Bowl, among all the other Super Bowl spots, telling people to then watch the full trailer online...

- or -

B) Disney can make an event out of debuting the trailer on one of their own shows, ensuring more eyeballs than they otherwise would have had, beat every other Super Bowl spot to the punch (in terms of coverage), and then still have the Super Bowl audience five days later.

It's a no-brainer.

In your opinion, how else should they debut the trailer, in conjunction with the Super Bowl?
Sea Speed
How long do you want to ignore this user?

If they own the channel, don't you think there's a show that will have more relevant eyeballs than good morning America, a show that caters to middle age housewives?

Genuine question: Do you ever wonder why you constantly find yourself in conflict here? Statements like this might be a good start.

There was nothing in your post that addressed the target demographic. It seemed like an honest question.
