I wouldn't kill the baby for cancer cure. The world needs population attrition. Maybe in the future when we can strike a balance with the ecosystem then hell yeah...nuke that baby.

Would this answer get me vaporized?

Yeah that could be. Y'all think she's gonna burn herself up? It's the end of the series so I think she's dead.
The season premier showed her as an old woman in a flash-forward so I don't think so.

My guess is they couldn't trust Nora yet. She didn't have faith in it, so they said she wasn't ready.

Then she came back to the hotel and was upset but you could clearly she is fighting an internal struggle. It's Nora who is stuck in between. Can't let go of her previous family, and can't fully buy in to her new life.

Kevin leaving might be what signifies a major moment for her to where she drops the guard she has had up around her to harden her since the departure, and she might become vulnerable enough to have faith and finally enter over if she truly wants to be with her old family.

You answer yes, you get rejected. You answer no you get rejected. They didn't take her money either so I don't know how it's a scam. Are they just trying to hurt people? I almost feel like while not directly related to what Laurie and John are doing, it's something similar going on. Laurie and John are tricking people into having closure with their loved ones. But the vaporizers are giving people hope that they can reconnect with them and then rejecting them in the 11th hour. It's almost the direct opposite.

I love Nora's journey. We all know that Nora was pretending to defraud them. She was really there because she still has it inside of her that she'd go through anything to see her family again. Even if that includes suspending all disbelief. And I love how they've done this. We've been given so many examples of Nora ruining other people's hope because she had lost all of hers. But when it comes to her family she's still able to feel hope of her own. And when she flys across the world to give strangers $20k and has it all blow up in her face it crushes her. Add Kevin leaving her and it has to be the lowest of lows for her. We saw a man set himself on fire over this rejection. You can only imagine what she's feeling.

The Guilty Remnant's purpose was to remind people of their loss and pain. They wanted everyone to still feel that scar.

The Vaporizers are trying to relieve that pain through either A. sending people to see their loved ones or B. killing them.

Don't see much of a resemblance.

The vaporizers are forcing the people to deal with their mental burden/guilt, at least from what we saw with Nora.

But Nora said all the people that had been apart of the "machine" haven't been heard from since. So they must follow through and vaporize some people.

So he didn't get picked bc he said he couldn't and she didn't bc she said she would. So what's their game?
When an interviewer asks a question and gives you a choice of answers to choose from, WHAT you answer was is never as important as WHY you answered it that way.

I'm paraphrasing, but Nora answered something like this: "Kids die every day, so what's one more? Plus, I get to cure cancer..."

Her nonchalant answer to killing an innocent child shows that she places very little value on the life of that individual. But by saying "I get to cure cancer" shows that she also places more value on her own actions & legacy than the life of humanity as a whole.

Had she answered either:
A) I save the life of the child because all life is precious and should therefore never be sacrificed...
OR
B) I sacrifice the life of this heroic child in order to save the lives of millions of innocent victims across the world...

it's possible that either justification would have shown a greater respect for humanity at the micro or macro level. But her response showed respect for neither. Perhaps they're looking for someone with a little more concern for life and humanity.

I definitely agree it was a "how you answered" sort of question. Both doctors moved in as she inquired as to whether she was the mother of the child. Implying she was closing in on the right way to answer. Some answer conveying a strong family connection might have done it. such as:

1. I couldn't because what if it was my child

Or

2. I would because what if my child had cancer and all those other mothers with cancer children

Maybe a strong family connection is what helps the vaporizer work. Cousin Larry seemed pretty strongly connected to his departed loved ones. Poor gasoline guy probably did a poor job answering.

Machine won't work on doctors because: "everything I need is here".

Terrible episode. I like Matt's character but that's not how I would have given him his "moment" episode in the final season.

It's becoming increasingly clear that they had major scheduling conflicts with key members of the cast and had to account for that when writing the season.

yep. the season has no momentum at all. it stops/starts in spurts and the lunges one way or the other.

I really hope the final three episodes can tie themselves together.

Ever since I saw the preview last week for this week's episode I've kind of been dreading watching it. It looked pretty bad/pointless, and now it sounds like it is. I may hold off and watch back to back next weekend. No interest in slogging through what it looked to be.

I thought it was great. The show has gone off the "weird as hell" deep end but every episode this season has been amazing.

"That's the guy I was telling you about" was terrific

my problem is matt is a horrible character with nothing redeeming about him.

he claims to be a man of god, yet he is a selfish man.

he denies his faith by declaring and worshipping a new messiah/prophet.
he blasphemes by writing a new scripture
he preaches his crap to others and even finds converts.
he neglects and ignores his wife/child.

he is, by Christian standards, evil.

I do not care about him.

but the episode was gratuitous. with the sex. with the tiger. everything.

I get the symbolism with the sin/party boat and matt's confrontation with "god" but I do not care.

I am more pissed we missed out on more Kevin and Nora.

What a weird thing. Lindelof is such a weird, but interesting, guy. The way he's opened the floodgates to be influenced by the people who write about his shows (this, the bizarre S2 opening that was just to piss off Andy Greenwald/Chris Ryan, etc) after his openly traumatic reaction to their response to the end of Lost is just...weird.

Everything you described about Matt is what makes him such a great character. He's a holier than thou hypocrite who thinks he's at the center of everything. He's so stubborn that he's the one to carry out God's plan.

I absolutely loved the scene where he's talking to Burton. He's so angry that Burton claims to be God. And he is set on getting him to admit he's a fraud. And just like he's been tested over and over again with no reward from his God he's really desperately seeking the attention of Burton God. Desperate enough to knock him unconscious and tie him down so that he can for once have a conversation.

I just thought it was awesome how in five minutes of listening to Burton he's suckered into believing him. I think it's a huge moment and turning point for Matt. He sees that all it took to believe Burton and let him go was the fact that there was benefit to him. It's a reflection on his life's work. He's not actually a man serving God or the greater good but serving his own self. And it all finally 'clicks' for him once Burton snaps his fingers and walks away without actually doing anything for him. He wants to believe in anything so badly. But again, he sees there's no point.

When he sees Burton getting mauled in the end and turns around with "that's the guy I was telling you about".. [I like to think of him meaning not just the guy that threw the man overboard, but God himself.] No emotion. No remorse. I think he's finally lost his faith.

Loved this episode.

It was an episode with a lot of bizarre stuff in it, but I still found it interesting. I do think Matt is the most annoying main character on the show, but his struggle with faith was worth seeing IMO.
