Second Hand Lions.

Robert Duvall and Micheal Caine playing old crazy men.

I have 2 friends in that film. They said Robert Duvall and Michael Caine were really cool.

+1 for The Salton Sea and The Cooler

I'm not sure if The Contender is a movie "no one has heard of", but it is much better than it's box office success.

I was going to say SLC Punk, but it's already here. So instead, I'll go with this thing:

Not sure if foreign counts, but great Klaus Kinski movie. Unbelievable scenery shots.

Watched "A Face in the Crowd" a few years ago, it's a late 50's movie with Andy Griffith of all people. A film about politics and Charisma that is still relevant today. Even more so today than when I watched

A fantastic movie on human nature's inability to handle fame and complete adulation. One of my all time favorites!

It's mostly subtitled, but you would need to know more than 5 languages to watch it without. It's about a group of foreign exchange students living together in Spain, so the language barriers/subtitles work well.

I remember seeing the previews for Brotherhood of the Wolf when I was in college. My roommates and i were jacked to go see it not realizing it was a foreign film. As soon as we saw subtitles we walked out.....young and stupid...I regret that now because I heard it was good but I've forgotten about it til now. Will watch soon!!

And if you really don't want to deal with subtitles, the english dub is actually pretty decent

"Amores Perros" (2000) - Spanish movie with literal translation being "Love's a B***h." Watched this for a multicultural communication class at SHSU for a small research project. Subtitles. intertwining of 3 stories with the character in each dealing with loss, rough times, and love. Really good.

"Boyhood" (2014) - filmed with same cast over course of 12 years. Done by Linklater. They would film for 2 months every year to follow kid from 6yrs old to 18. A friend had a small role in film, and also has Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke.

"The Virginty Hit" (2010) - comedy about, well self explanatory. Friend from movie above also in this one.

"Ricki and the Flash" (2015) - Meryl Streep (as a frontwoman for a rock band!), Kevin Kline, and Rick Springfield biggest names in the movie. About following dreams and learning to accept yourself and others for who they really are. Funny at times. I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Seriously? In the last three posts we have Kurosawa's arguably most famous film and Boyhood which won the Golden Globe for best film just two years ago? This thread has seriously jumped the shark.

I'll second green street hooligans....loved that.

My vote will always be for out cold. The only time I ever saw a movie in the theatre alone because we had just moved. Laughed my butt off and started following Zach Galifianakis comedy show after that.

I know that Boyhood was a "bigger" award wining movie, but it seems that every time I ask someone about it, they have never heard of it. That's the reason I included it. To me, that kinda fit the title of the thread.

Is Murder By Death a valid nomination? Very funny.

The Lives of Others is one of the best I've ever seen. So damn good. Won best foreign film but was better than best picture that year imo.

Never heard of 'The Lives So Far' will check it out. Love me some awesome foreign films.

Murder By Death is one of my all time favorite comedies. Anyone that hasn't seen this is in for a treat: cast featuring Eileen Brennan, Truman Capote, James Coco, Peter Falk, Alec Guinness, Elsa Lanchester, David Niven, Peter Sellers, Maggie Smith, Nancy Walker, and Estelle Winwood, written by Neil Simon

Anytime you can have Alec Guiness playing a blind butler in a Neil Simon script, you have a winner.

Lastly,

Black Dynamite, greatest blaxploitation action comedy ever. SO MANY quotes and scenes from that movie. I'm overly enthusiastic, and nonapologetic, about this movie.

Here is another vote for Primer.

I agree The Apostle, which has been mentioned several times, is a great movie, but I don't think a movie that stars Robert Duvall and Farrah Fawcett, grossed over $20 million at the box office, and garnered a Best Actor nomination for Duvall qualifies as a movie "no one has ever heard of."

Waking Life - A sort-of animated film about lucid dreaming, this Richard Linklater directed oddity grossed $3 million on limited release. Strange film, but I enjoyed it.

Brothers of the Head - Co-joined twin brothers front a punk rock band in the 70's. Surprisingly entertaining. Grossed in the mid-five figures. Along the same lines (only a true story), The Filth and the Fury, a real documentary about the rise and fall of The Sex Pistols, grossed under $1 million but is a bit of a cult classic on DVD, etc.

Echotone - A well-made documentary about the Austin music scene in the last decade, featuring among others The Black Angels, Black Joe Lewis and Bill Baird.

Ace in the Hole (aka The Big Carnival) - a brilliant film about media sensationalism and personal ambition run amuk, released (to poor reception) in 1951. Directed by Billy Wilder, at the peak of his power, and starring a perfectly cast Kirk Douglas, this movie has more than stood the test of time. Along the same lines, The Sound of Fury (aka Try and Get Me).

Again, I'm sure most on this board are familiar with these, but are probably unknown to the general public:

Possibly the two greatest action movies I've ever seen and are just incredible feats of filmmaking.
