Also, knew the second the realtor's mom was standing on the corner she'd be run over. Kinda dumb and predictable. And awfully convenient.

Agreed. Too easy. Dumb writing in an otherwise great show.

I enjoyed the ride, and will be there for season 2.

But I will say, as evidenced by how many things we've brought up on this thread...if this were a network or cable show that you had to wait week by week for, it'd be torn apart.

The fact that it's such a quick pace and you can binge helps it overcome some ridiculous situations and blemishes.

The $8 million that Marty started off with was in his investment portfolio that he liquidated, at Del's request. So he now shows up in Missouri with all that cash, so he becomes an 'angel investor'. Anyone asks where he got the money, he simply shows the statements from his portfolio. After he buys the strip club, the bar, and the funeral home, he now has multiple streams of revenue with which to wash his cash. The cost of damming an area to create the river for the casino, the construction costs on the casino, all of these will be places to easily launder the $50 million. Of course, the easiest way for Marty to have been able to launder billions would be to just start a hedge fund, but he told Del he could make it work in Missouri, and none of those people are wealthy to invest in a hedge fund. You can't wash $50 million if you can't even find someone capable of giving you $1 million. I thought Marty's dislike for violence was unrealistic. At some point, he would have either called Del and told him to have the Snells wiped out, or he would have shot them himself. The minute Jacob starts his speech about 'first time you pay the tax, second time you take the punishment', you shoot him.

Agree with what you're saying. I guess since we're all hashing out what bothered us!

Like you mentioned, you would think a simple phone call to Del saying "Hey, I need some Mexicans to come on up and take care of some problems" rather than getting strong armed to pay 7.2MM. But I digress....

I wouldn't hesitate to call del and be like, "hey, some pregnant lady butchers need taking care of. Help a brother out?"

I did like the character of Tuck. I thought the blatant symbolism of pure innocence corrupted by the gun culture of America was a little heavy-handed, though.

Just finished Ep 8.

Did not expect to get any backstory, much less a full episode.

The time shifting did throw me off a bit. Didn't realize it was not in order until we saw the crash again.

I binge this last week. I enjoyed it, noted inconsistencies and huh parts I could live with.

I find myself liking the family. The flashback episode gives a decent story of how they let themselves get into the illegal stuff. Even somewhat excuses the suddenness of it. I find myself hoping they can find a way out.

Will definitely watch s2.

I didn't understand it either so I googled it. Apparently that was a dream sequence? If so, I don't recall that being made clear. Anyways I guess the writers intended that scene to represent her inner turmoil as opposed to an actual life-or-death scare.

I took it as her internal struggle to decide if she wants to go on living in this new reality or just give up. The ease of which she springs off the ground shows me she was just having a "I could die right here like this" moment

Finished.

Good season. Solid show and looking forward to S2.

It's a clear step below BB, but that is harldy a knock on it.

It's a cash business and Marty has his hands in a few other pots. I think the fact they can't prove the money inflow is legitimate is precisely the reason the feds can't really do anything about it. There's nothing to audit when customers hand over straight cash.
I can wrap my head around how it works with cash-intensive businesses like strip clubs, casinos, car washes, etc. What I don't understand is how it would work with the funeral home they bought, the Blue Cat, and building the church.

That money has already been laundered. Remember the cash being withdrawn and all the crap he went through to get it?

Finished S1. Liked it.

Wasn't a huge fan of killing Del off. He was fantastic at creating major tension, and I really liked the respect he had for Marty blended in with his ruthlessness. They could have just ended the season with a Snell/Del partnership and that final scene didn't have to happen. I think the whole police scene at the bottom of the property was lame too. Too quick and convenient that he just drives off in a car they have a search warrant for that isn't registered to him.

Overall, I give it a 7.5 or 8 out of 10. Which is good. I'll be ready for a S2 should it get renewed.

Explanation:

Remember, the sheriff owes a debt to the Snells.

That's why he wouldn't go up there & let Marty go.

1 FBI can't really force the sheriffs department to act. Which takes us to the 1 FBI going alone problem

The general story sounds interesting, and I like Bateman, but the reviews all mention how 'obscenely dark' it is.

Not sure Im on board with that. I dont want to feel dirty when I'm done watching a show, and it sounds like that's what Ozark intends for the audience.

(seems like this is a trend lately with shows trying to gain traction)

Bloodline gave me this feeling as well. I stuck with it but that show. Ugh

Unrealistic that Michael Bluth could launder $8M without the use of a banana stand

Just finished. Really like it. There are flaws, as noted on this thread but overall I rate it a strong to quite strong debut. As for end of season awards:

Fav character: Ruth. She seems to be the "Jesse from BB" character. She's caught up in it and bad, in fact a killer, but seems to have a good heart trying to shine through
Fav character (honorable mention) : Buddy. He has some sheet in his past that allows him to roll with the Byrd punches easily. Plus anyone using "tamale hole" in a sentence deserves some recognition
Least favorite character: The Snell wife. She is as evil and miserable as they come
Favorite scene: Marty and Wendy finally airing their honest feelings about each other
Funniest moment: Del acknowledging out loud that Marty always seems to mention he's from "the second largest cartel"

When Breaking Bad and Justified have a baby you get Ozark.

Solid show, Ruth is also my favorite character.

I'm glad to see the actress who plays Ruth has grown up a little since her appearances in The Americans. Those scenes with Phillip were incredibly awkward and made me feel really uncomfortable.

Finished this yesterday.

I liked it... didn't love it. Will watch next season if there is one.

Just too much of people talking casually about their crimes and what they do to anyone and everyone. At some point. But just have to do that suspension of disbelief thing.

Noticed the very liberal bias as well. Just comes with the territory if you are going to watch anything TV these days, but this was "in your face" proselytizing.

The scene with the daughter swimming and then "drowning" was weird and not sure what the symbolism was supposed to be, but seem very similar to the pastor drowning/baptizing his baby. I'm terrible with symbolism in shows, and based on the heavy-handed liberal bias, I think Jason Bateman is bad at it, too.

I really enjoyed it. I'll definitely be in for season 2 if there is one.

All the acting was great and the story kept me interesting. It did a good job of presenting the characters obstacles without being too outrageous or unbelievable.

The one thing I felt was odd was that Marty is supposed to be this amazing guy at what he does yet he has a tendency to be pretty sloppy, leaving money and accounting books just lying around on desks all the time. Maybe it's because of the pressure that he got sloppy but at the beginning he is the best in the biz and then as the show moves he starts leaving stuff around and flapping his gums to everyone. Anytime someone talks back to him it was like "You know what, I launder money for the Mexican drug cartel, so you don't want to mess with me."
Jim01

What exactly was liberally biased in this show? It always interests me when people claim a show is left leaning. I never once the entire show thought about politics, much less in my face. It had nothing to do with the show whatsoever, so what made you think it was so left leaning? I mean just because she worked on an Obama campaign? Honestly just curious what stuck out to you.

As for the water scenes those were both just bad attempts at suspense and drama to me.

I think the gun purchase really rubbed people the wrong way in regards to liberal slant. First because it was unnecessary. I mean really, it provided NOTHING to the story. The kid really didn't have to use the gun, that naked guy shot the mexican guy anyway. And second the liberal inaccuracies when it comes to gun issues that were portrayed. Other then that, I didn't catch anything else.
Jim01
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
I agree the gun buying was unnecessary. We had already established there were guns in the house and the kid knew how to get and use them, so not too much need for him to buy his own.

I guess that scene was anti-gun for sure. I took it more to show the lawlessness of that area though, that everyone bent the law to serve their purpose.

this is the one thing that I kept coming back to. Walter White lied his ass off for probably 3+ seasons to conceal what he was up to. In this show, the kids know, the pastor knows, the Blue Cat lady knows, etc. By the end of S1 is there anyone left in town who doensn't know Marty does?!? I feel like S2 will open with Marty's kids taking him to school on Career Day. "My dad launders money for the second largest drug cartel in Mexico"
