episode 4 was fun to think about from a theology standpoint.

Christians would definitely have a problem with this whole concept.

I wonder if you can eventually run out of storage space on the stack. To me, it's not appealing to live forever if I have to start losing memories. I would much rather live a whole life and lose a couple memories before dying than living some super drawn out version of Memento.

probably can purchase upgrades?

It's all just what you can afford.

Christians would mostly have an issue because of the theology behind the resurrection of the body.
Eschatological now gets a low more complicated if your body and brain get put on ice and spun up every now and then.

4 eps in and it's definitely picked up.

The art direction and world sucked me in initially but the story took a bit to catch up, I'm genuinely intrigued where this is going now.

I hope so. Pretty good world building to just shut it down. Lots of story opportunities.

I agree with you. I wasn't a huge fan of Ortega either.

Fine with the story/concept.

The female cop cannot act though.

WHAT?! I thought Oretega was great! It was the sister who couldn't act that well.

Ortega was far better than the sister acting wise IMO. Dichen has been on a few shows I've watched, and I've never really been on board with her acting wise. Even though the actress that played Ortega took a couple of episodes to find her feet, once the character was developed I thought she was fine.

Speaking of acting, the guy that played the criminal turned grandma was pretty great

Yes! I totally believed he was a mexican grandma in a big white guy's body.

I found it extremely racist. A white male actor making a caricature of a female POC.

I thought she got better as the season went along, but in the first few episodes she was just angry/whiny all the time. I guess some of the story down the line explained why she was initially that way, but I just didn't think her character had much depth. I do agree Ortega was better than the sister.

I'm only halfway through episode 2, but if Ortega is better than the sister then I am not long for this show.

Ortega talks like she is reading a script.

She gets better, for the most part. At least, I think story will eventually overcome the acting.

I'm still getting through these as my wife checked out and lost interest. I thought she did a good job in the Hallow's Eve episode.

Ortega becomes much more likable or at least a more tolerable actor later in the show.

The sister was pretty meh for me as well.

The payoff in episode 10 was really satisfying. I felt like I was watching a John Woo sci-fi flick.

Ortega was ok in my opinion, and Rei didn't bother me.

Good God, they made Lizzie kick all kinds of ass at the end. I liked how her family came together. Also, the scene with Tak and Rei, where he held her at the end, was well done.

I was reading there will be a Season 2, but we likely won't see Tak in Ryker's sleeve because the actor was cast in a new Amazon sci-fi show.

I hope they have a different actor, the second book takes place on an entirely different planet, and I believe he gets his own custom Asian sleeve. Easy way to bring back his past actor who was fantastic.

Got two episodes in. Liking it a lot. Will finish this weekend.

Also, the "this isn't believable sci fi" stance amuses me.

This is not hard core sci fi. This is damn near a 100% cyberpunk theme. Similar-ish to those who don't dabble in scifi. To those who do, they are really different in concept.

it's been too many years since I read this series. i cannot remember the 2nd book though i see it on my shelf. i remember the third being weird. i tried the fantasy series by same author but the protagonist was too flaming homo for me.

i finally finished this series. i enjoyed this. a better concept and series than Star Wars, in my opinion, or at least more original SciFi.

i did feel that they presented Taks earlier in the series so that he should've chosen Rei over Ortega but i guess his beliefs overrode his love for sis.

too bad they did not show the human bodies more enhanced/ modified for combat or other.

do you mean modified for combat like the people in the fight drome, or more like Ortega with the robot arm?

This is just my random thought process, but I felt like the disdain for the AI (crazy stalker, clingy ex, etc) justified not having more self-functional technology.

I loved the show and even the concept that like Doctor Who, the show is not tied to a single actor as the main character.

both. Artistic civilians and for fighting, maybe enhanced speed or strength? they showed Tak in his original sleeve able to see CTAC coming thru walls

Finished the show last night. I fully enjoyed it (minus the acting by the sister, which was tolerable until the last two eps).

***** SPOILERS (getting issues with the codes, and it's been long enough, IMO to begin this discussion in plain text*****

I did however not like the twist with the sister becoming the villain. It just didn't feel earned or convincing in any way. Maybe I missed something, but it was too big of a leap for me to feel satisfied with as a character motivation. The plot definitely was better for it, and as a story I understand and agree with the need to do it, it just was so poorly executed. Compare that to the two big leaps Tak's character took: 1) joining the Envoys; and 2) deciding to do good instead of be out for only himself. Both of those felt believable: 1) his only emotional connection was to his sister, so finding her set in motion a chain of events drawing from that irrational driver; 2) there was a scene where they had Tak looking at the Elliots and Poe and realizing that he does indeed have friends was subtly and very well executed to show that turn in his motivations.

Now:
  • Is there some deeper meaning to those end of episode vignettes that precede the credits? Or, did they just hint at the next episode?
  • I hope season 2 focuses more on the planetary colonies. That feels like a world ripe for the picking (with sort of a Firefly/Serenity thing, too)

I honestly didn't think that the twist with the sister was really a twist. To me it was kind of obvious that she had a brother complex when they were showing their backstory.

I really liked the series. As someone who reads scifi (but not the book this was based on) I found it very enjoyable and well done: A-. I didn't have any problems with the acting. The sister was a little stiff - but let's be real here: how many actresses are willing to do that much full frontal nudity that can act well? I thought Ortega was fine (in both meanings of the word...they really were spectacular ).

I can suspend a lot for the sake of popcorn enjoyment, but it did bother me that the female cop was able to defeat 50 clone versions of sister envoy, who is supposedly a complete badass. Then also "strongarms" Oddjob, who is also a complete badass.

Minor, but it's ok for these threads to turn into minor nit b**ch sessions, right?
Ulrich
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I didn't have a problem with either of those.

On the first one she had a gun against naked newborn clones. On the second, she has a bionic arm. We saw her beat the snot out of Abboud in the first episode or two and acquit herself well in the underground fight club, so her combat skills were already well established.

Second book is off world and he has a custom military Asian sleeve. Obviously they could go different. I hope they do a little bit with the sister and just have it be a clone of his original body so they can bring the Asian actor from his flashbacks back
