Very meh episode. I just don't care enough about the new people to want to watch them that much. And Tara. I also still want Tara to get chomped.

I felt the episode was bland as well, but it helped establish the backstory of a new group we know nothing about... which is important...like I know more about the whispers than the other new group that joined on, because they just showed up with no real story. Also by the pressures for next week on talking dead, looks to be a really good episode!

just watched the first episode of this springs season 9.....

Who is Lydia? Obviously was the female whisperer but sounds like this was a past (and should have been young) character from past episodes but can't place it.

Without looking it up my only guess is that it was Carl's sort-of girlfriend from years back.

Bout to play tonight's episode
We've never seen her before.

Lydia's mom seems like a psycho badass. I'm intrigued.

ya after reading online I figured jm94 was referring to Lydia from the comics which is a character we haven't seen on the show yet.

Seems like they will make her a somewhat major character as well as the mother with spending a whole episode going into their backstory.

I tried to watch the episode last night and crap was it boring. People walking and talking - it was like lord of the rings. nothing happened.

I flipped over to the TV classics channel and watched a rerun of threes company. When mr roper from 30 years ago is more entertaining than your show, time to wrap it up.

She's just not a top tier character. I hope they're setting things up for Darryl to take over at Hilltop. He appears to be the one confronting the Whisperers at the gate in the next week's episode. That's something the leader does.

She's now the 4th billed, behind Daryl, Michonne, and Carol. And with Danai Gurira announcing she's basically leaving after this season, she'll move up another spot.

I don't see them killing her off anytime soon. Sadly.

Sorry if it's already been covered but in the season premier when they bring Jesus back and bury him I never saw them do / the aftermath of the head wound so he wouldn't turn. His head looked perfect when they got him back to bury him. Did I miss it?

It was never clear. There was a second where Darryl (or Aaron can't remember who picked him up in the graveyard) could have done it, but it's not real obvious. I even rewatched a few times.

i didn't see them do it.

However, in the more recent seasons when it's been someone they cared for/loved they seemed to go in behind the head to not affect the way the face looked.

Also it's probably safe to assume they did it and we just didn't need to see.

Did they have a major continuation error in this episode with Lydia's dad's beard? They showed him start to clip it off. Then in the scene where Matias is panicking and the mom strangles him, the dad is holding Lydia and he has no beard. Then when the mom kills the dad, he has the beard back. Did I see that correctly?

I know, in a show where technical errors abound, not a big deal.

That was done intentionally (and very well done).

The point was Lydia was telling two different stories.....one was what she wanted to believe.....and the second was what actually happened.

In the recollections where her father had the beard, that was when she was remembering him as the abuser and her mother as the loving parent.

When it actuality, the father was the loving parent (shown with no beard and slightly different hair) and the mother was the abuser....there's a quick clip where the mother is looking at the mirror cutting off her hair saying the same lines as the father when he was cutting the beard......him cutting the beard never happened cause he never had one.

He also didn't have the beard when the mother killed him. He DID have the beard when Lydia mis-remembered him getting killed by a zombie. There's also another scene where she quickly remembers seeing her father die with blood coming out of his neck, and that was when he also had the beard and wasn't recalling things correctly.

This was a big highlight for me cause I felt it shows just how much of a manipulator this new villain is going to be.

Nice, Joker. I knew there was a reason for the beard thing (since it seemed so out of the blue), but I didn't catch all this. Thanks!

Well **** I think there was a continuity error.

What I said as far as the breakdown of the flashbacks is true.

However, I found the scene where it shows her dad getting killed by Alpha, and he does have the beard in that scene.

I think they just screwed up and accidentally shot that scene while he had it on.

EDIT: my only other thought is that we're not done with the flashbacks.

The technically don't show Alpha killing the dad. They just show her pressing him against the wall and "shushing" Lydia and that's it. So they may add more on top of it.

Maybe Lydia finding out her mom is there triggers another flashback or when they're reunited (guessing that happens) the final flashback is triggered showing exactly what happened.

Even if there ends up being a continuity error, I still liked your explanation. It added more to the episode than I got out of it the first viewing.

I've been waiting to see Alpha for a while now, but did anyone feel that the actress took her inspiration for the role from Ma Gogan in the original Pete's Dragon? (sorry couldn't find a picture for you guys, google Shelly Winters & Pete's Dragon)...her voice though...so much wanted to hear her say "I gotta a bill of sale right here!"

Ok, I think we are set up now. Maybe? Need any more setup episodes? Probably.

I have a feeling that whatever happened in Alexandria a couple years back that they will tease and tease but never actually say musta been bad. :/

Thought the scene with the deaf girl in the cornfield was well done. I'm also digging the Alpha stuff, seems like she's gonna be a good villian.

I thought tonight's episode was just, "meh".....

Thought last nights with the background info with Lydia and Alpha was much more compelling.

They could've expanded on that much more and included additional flashbacks triggered from Lydia realizing her mom was there....

Didn't need the long hunt for a projector light bulb....hell could've had the whole story take place in the kingdom with them just fixing something else wrong with the projector and it would've pretty much been the same and would have served mainly as a little break from the much more interesting and tense scenes dealing with Alpha, Lydia, and the Hilltop and the more needed flashbacks.

Oh well...seems like next weeks will be a lot more interesting with Daryl and the deaf girl going after Henry

Side note:

What was the background story again with the husband (metal worker) of the old couple? I remembered when he was telling his story of being an alcoholic to somebody and also that having something to do with a tragic story with his son but not sure.....seeing him with the bady that the whisperers were leaving for dead at the end got me trying to remember

His son was killed by walkers. Gregory turned him against Maggie , by getting him drunk (he's an alcoholic recovering) for it and he attacked her which lead to Gregory being hanged. The rest you should remember.

Any scene with Jerry and Carol has a lot going for it.

So, what's up with the hiltop's magic escape tunnel? I kept waiting for it to be revealed the whisperers figured out where it was by seeing the dozens of people (and a crying baby) using it while they're grouped at the front gate.

Good season overall.

If the deaf lady isn't the next death, (or someone sacrificing themselves for her) I'll be disappointed. Nothing against her, just seems sound is a key medium to detect walkers/people in the woods especially at night. And she keeps getting in hunting parties.

I don't know much about the whispers from the comics, but in the previews fir next week, Lydia tells alpha that she was faking it to gain their trust... if that's the case she's a damn good actor.

It also looks like we might get our wish and Henry gets killed next week!

My favorite part of the episode last week was when the def girl was in the corn field, and when it was just her, there was like 0 sound, very effective imagery

One things always drove me crazy since the beginning is going out at night. It's just so damn stupid.
