The final reveal was garbage

Movie well made and intriguing

I didn't see any actual symbolism, what I thought was going to be symbolism turned out to be totally literal.

When the family is driving in a car above ground, what happens when they make a sharp left?

Do the underground family simultaneously smash into a tunnel wall at 60 mph?

Exactly. You made the point I wanted to make without the long-winded answer. The "symbolism," in the end, was literal, and that's probably my biggest complaint with the whole thing. It needed to stay as symbolism or some vague supernatural answer or something along those lines. And the smashing-into-the-wall point is a great one. The logistics simply don't make a lick of sense.

This movie should've been an episode of Black Mirror.

(No pun intended.)

***SPOILERS***

I will not pretend to understand the logistics. For all I know, the 'tethered' are not in the exact location all the time. Where the girl went down, is also where she came up in Adelaide's case. She could have been waiting for the tether to return her entire life.

What I will disagree with is the symbolism portion. You don't see symbolism in a expansive and heavily populated 'tunnel' world right below our feet that we don't explore or care to know exists? You don't see symbolism in that world being one easy shiny escalator away? Or the fact that escalator only went one way? You may not see them as meaningful, but those are rather pointed symbols.

Somehow people can suspend belief for superheros, ghosts, and unkillable dolls, but a cloned society is a no go.

This is such straw man bullsh*t. It has absolutely nothing to do with not being able to suspend belief, and everything to do with not explaining the conceit, if even briefly, in a couple additional lines of dialogue. I can believe in superheroes, ghost, and un-killable dolls as long as the reasoning for their existence is properly set up, justified, and makes sense within the world the filmmakers are painting. That, and those things are usually chalked up to some kind of alien or supernatural power we can't yet understand... not the U.S. government.

In Peele's case, vaguely mentioning "tunnels," and then offhandedly saying the government created "tethered" clones just doesn't do it, when it also raises so many questions. So we all have "tethered" clones that live just an escalator ride below the surface, and these clones essentially mirror our movements, follow us underground across the globe, wear comparable versions of our clothes (and have changes of alternative versions of the clothes we're going to wear in the future), can produce life, and have to eat raw rabbits when we eat real food, and OUR government had the ability/technology to create this scenario? Yet the rest of the world is the world as we know it? And no one's ever discovered this until now? I'm sorry, but that's just straight up DUMB. It literally makes no sense, not on any level. And again, I get that it's ultimately just a bunch of mumbo-jumbo symbolism, but when the entire plot hinges on that mumbo-jumbo symbolism, that's where it falls apart for me. I don't need a dissertation, but I do need just a slightly more suitable or believable base from which such extraordinary claims are built. Show me that your world is just a little more thought out than a few vague lines in a bad, third-act exposition dump.
Nah man. You're being incredibly unfair here, IMO.

I can say that I 100% don't care about any of the logistics on the tethered anymore than I care about how Iron Man's suit doesn't obey actual physics. Its not important in either case.

Wanting something to make sense on the most basic of levels is being "unfair"? My bar is incredibly low here.

I mean I could say the same on the Iron Man suit physics. We all suspend disbelief on very basic levels for certain films. What you consider basic, I consider irrelevant in this case. The reality and logistics of the tethered ultimately aren't important to the points being made.

To me anyway. YMMV.

Also annoying

The dad being horribly injured in his leg from a tap of a baseball bat

As many times as they showed him limping, the actual collision of the bat with his leg should have been swung harder that a toddler

You know what, thinking about this movie again, it was kind of strange that no one owned any guns. Maybe that was the point of the whole thing. It was actually a pro-gun movie. You never know when you need to protect yourself from yourself.

This is a really good question.

Saw it last night, and pretty much hated it for all the reasons others have mentioned. It's really just a Twilight Zone - The Outer Limits - Black Mirror episode that runs about 2 hours too long. However, I will say that the ballet fight scene was extremely well done and choreographed. Excellent work there, even if the rest of the back story was ridiculous.

How did she get out of the handcuffs?
When she did, why not walk upstairs?
If you're handcuffed to the bed and the other is walking up in real world, was she just walking and dragging the bed as a 4 year old?

It doesn't matter much IMO. However, driving doesn't entail a lot of actual movement. We get in and sit still.

This movie sucks. I think we should start a class action lawsuit against rottentomatoes to get our $7 back.

There is no way 100% of any group could think that movie was good.

I actually like a lot of key and peele stuff and liked Get Out and even that silly movie Keanu somewhat but this movie just sucked.

The only thing good about it was I got 5 on it.

Saw last night. Definitely a big meh from me. Would've been a good movie to catch streaming at home one night but wasn't worth a trip to the theatre, IMO.

Definitely a wtf too, but feel like that was intentional.

Comic relief felt weird and forced as well

Thinking about this movie more, the more I don't like it.

Why did no one use guns?

"We had to eat raw rabbits!" Why? You weren't dirty, you had clean clothes that were folded for you, you had potable water, did you not have an oven?

Did the rabbits give them superhuman strength?

Who did their laundry? How did they not get sick living in close quarters?

When one of their tethers dies on Earth, did they get killed down there too?

WHY DID NO ONE USE GUNS

I mean, the kid had matches. They couldn't light some of their clean clothes or school desks on fire and cook the damn rabbits?

Throughout almost the entirety of the movie until the big reveal of the "downstairs" in the 3rd act, I thought maybe it could be some sort of weird rip in the space time continuum where maybe they were from an alternate reality / parallel universe. That would have made a lot more sense than them being actual real life people living in the same world, just underground.

F**** this movie.

What happened to the tethers when the people above ground were on an airplane? Do they descend deeper underground and obtain the ability to zombie walk at super speed?

What does Trump have to do with Peele's ****ty movie and racist perspective?

When a movie sucks and the director is racist, expect people to say something.

I saw it last night. Kind of letdown given all the hype, but isn't bad by any stretch. The "twist" is too easily predictable. The movie somewhat goes off the rails in the final 30 minutes.

Interesting. What races does he feel his race is superior to? And what race does he identify with given his father is black and mother is white? And what does his white wife think about his racism?

I guess some posters stick their head in the sand when the director of a currently running movie makes racist comments.

Bad enough that staff allows the politics board to exist in the form it does, now we have to deal with them trolling over here?

This is a board where we discuss a MOVIE. The politics board already has a thread to discuss his comments if you didn't like them.

Lots of squirming over, as has been said, the director of the movie this very thread is about made racist remarks about casting the lead in said movie.

That has nothing to do with "politics", unless one assumes that Peele is playing politics with his comment. Because, certainly he can't be racists since he has white friends.

Its just that the people who lack social skills and live in the politics board just step out of their cave and decide to crap on other forums too. Its like if you live near a neighbor who keeps a bunch of trash around their house eventually the wind blows some of it into your yard.

As long as that forum exists the way it does on this board, it'll spill over to the other forums.

It does suck to constantly have to ignore them.

If you have the ability to search texags (have to pay I think) and want a quick laugh, search all forums for the word "garbage" and filter by claym711. Not sure why I find that so funny, but I do.
