I honestly don't understand at all not liking this movie. I thought it was incredibly well done. It was about the kids. In the first one, it was about the parents sacrificing trying to protect the kids. In the second one, it was about the kids - especially the boy - finding the courage and the ability to protect themselves. The final scene, with the shots of the brother and sister each killing a monster, I found just awesome and beautiful.
We don't tell kids stories about dragons so they know that dragons exist. They already know that. We tell them stories about dragons so they know dragons can be defeated. (paraphrase of Chesterton.)
Very well said. I thought the movie was incredible. The way the three storylines interweaved and overlapped in inventive ways (in terms of the editing) was masterful. I guess I get wanting more plot, but the characters each evolved in more-than-satisfying ways, which was more than enough for me, personally. Yes, there are things to nitpick to death in terms of the aliens, their backstory/plan, etc, but Krasinski is such a fantastic director, and these movies are so expertly done, that none of that stuff bothers me in the least (and it usually does). It's all about the characters and the storytelling, and Krasinksi has knocked both out of the park two movies in a row.
My parents were in town and we saw it last weekend in the theater, a big theater that was at least 75% full over a month after it hit theaters. Crowd was into it, and my parents and I all loved it. To the point where they were asking me about a potential third movie, and were already looking forward to it.
