We have a Lego resale store here in San Antonio (Olmos Park). It is one of my favorite small businesses ever. The guy buys bulk Lego at garage sales and other places. He has a couple of Lego savants that work for him. They can look at a pile of Lego a figure out what sets are in it. If they are collectible sets, they will pull them out, get the instructions, and reassemble them for sale. He has several hundred minifigs for sale too. The owner also hosts Lego birthday parties and corporate events, etc.

One other thing he has is a Lego table that is a pile of unsorted parts they think may not be worth their time to sort. You can go dig through and buy a ziplock bag for $8-20 depending on the size of the bag. (This is therapeutic for me some days). I go in there occasionally trying to build up some Technic parts.

At a recent birthday party my son attended they had that Millennium Falcon shown above sitting on a table off the side. The only difference is that is was made of black Lego instead of gray (Come to find out this is a thing. Google it). It was incredibly bad ass. I asked the store owner about it. He said one of his affluent customers commissioned him to build it for him so his people gathered up all the parts and built it. Customer paid him for it, and about six months later he brought it back because he didn't want it anymore. Store owner had it on consignment, but he didn't expect to move it anytime soon. I think the asking price was about $3500.

That's awesome, I need to go check that out next time we're in town. Do they have a big selection of used set?

They have a few. I don't spend a lot of time looking at the old sets. They also have a lot of custom work.

I ordered the R2-D2 set from Jeremy. If the quality is good, I'll probably order the Millennium Falcon set.
In the middle of the R2-D2 build. The quality of the bricks is not as good as genuine a LEGO set, but it's definitely good enough considering these sets are about 1/4 of the price.

My biggest issue so far is that i don't have any bins or anything for proper sorting, so i'm just winging it. And a lot of time has been spend just hunting pieces. I can't quite figure out the organization of which pieces are in which bags. Some of it makes sense, one bag will be 100 of the exact same piece, and then some of it just seems completely random, like 1 half of a hinge piece will be in 1 bag, and the other half of the hinge piece will be in a completely different bag...

The last genuine LEGO build i did, there were numbered bags. Bag 1 was was just a complete set of all the pieces you needed to build the 1st section. No prior organization needed. You just dump the bag and build section 1.

Anyway, I'll posts some R2-D2 pics when i finish.

I started the Bugatti tonight! Excited to see this thing come together. The pieces all look and feel the same as real LEGO.

Has anyone had experience selling their collections in bulk? I'm looking to sell off all of the Lego that we bought for my son over the years. Have 3 large bins full of partially completed sets and loose pieces, plus some large sets that are 95%+ built (remaining pieces in the bins) including Death Star, Mil Falcoln, Jawa transporter, etc. Plus trains, power modules, you name it. In McKinney - PM if interested.

If you have a industrious kid, breaking them down into the correct sets and selling them individually would be a good way to maximize your profit.

I was never that into LEGO as a kid but I have gotten into it with my son. He easily has over 2,000 pieces. He really loves the mini figures though. We usually buy the sets that come with the most guys because he won't play with the set more than a couple days but he'll incorporate the mini figures into his existing collection and play with them all the time.

Let me tell you, LEGO brand is worth the price. My wife recently took a trip to Normandy and brought back an off-brand army truck. The pieces will fit on LEGO bricks but the assembly directions are horrible. It wasn't clear at all. It's 224 pieces which my son can usually build by himself in 30-45 minutes. It took he and I two hours to built that thing, which would have been fine if we didn't start at 8 pm.

I saw a pretty cool thing a few months ago that allows you to upload a picture of LEGO bricks and it'll tell you what sets you can build with those pieces and show you the directions. It was still in development though.

Forgot to ever post this. It was a much more detailed build with A LOT more pieces than i expected there to be. It's also a lot bigger than it looked in pictures. Stands about a foot tall. Had 1 piece missing, and the quality definitely isn't as good as real LEGO, but overall i'm happy with it for the price.

Doesn't organizing blocks into partitioned containers negate the fun and challenge of sorting through a big mess of legos to find the right piece you need next?

A hand raking through a Rubbermaid full of legos is the sound of my childhood.

I was never huge into Legos as a kid - I had a big tub and free built but my 5yo son is a Lego freak. At dinner tonight made the comment that he doesn't want to do anything but Lego everyday all day.

My wife said he brought his ear protection down today because he was tired of the noise it was making looking for pieces.

My dad brag is that a week before he turned 5 he bought with his own money the 1,826 piece Lego Movie 2 Rex Spaceship. Took him about 6 days to build - he rested on the 7th.
