Someone earlier in the thread recommended Future Man on Hulu since it was also by same producers.

Not a bad show. Not a great show. Enjoyable though and made me get back into Corey Hart's hits. I'm almost done with season 1.

I think the concept of Christianity as being a suppressed, persecuted group is pretty funny... "Every depiction of Christianity is negative." Give me a break...

Cite three positive depictions of Christianity in film over the last 5 years.

So a money grab remake of Ben Hur.

A biopic of antiwar cult member. And yes Seventh Day Adventists are a cult.

And a film about Christians being tortured in japan and the protagonist renounces Christ publicly to avoid martyrdom and kept a private faith. "Whoever will deny Me to man, I will deny to my Father in heaven." That film was about as anti-Christian you could get.

I'll give you daredevil, but in truth they cant make him without his faith. Hollywood has secularized a few things before like the Illiad (Troy). But Murdock's upbringing is why he refuses to be the Punisher.

An obscure BBC show...about a crime solving priest. Yea...that's not exactly on the radar of the zeitgeist darlin.

One could make the same for Outlander, but even the depiction of Christians there is "burn her because shes a witch".

And that got cancelled after a season. Let's not forget Joss Whedon editorialized Christianity with River "correcting" the Bible and tearing it apart. Further, the protagonist is always mocking Book's profession telling him to stop giving him advice because "sermons make me sleepy" and refusing to let him pray over their meals in the chow hall.

The knives are always being driven in and it becomes so prevalent the audience just accepts it.

This is an incredibly bad take.

When Mal does that, it is meant to make him look bad.. not Book. When River does it, it's not a endorsement of her, but rather an indictment of her ability to comprehend beyond binary concepts.

You are reaching to find flaws with examples because you dont like that people have them.

Well of course, nothing like having three people provide you with completely different examples to completely destroy your argument.

I recommend we ignore him from here on. At this point, it's either trolling or being intentional obtuse.

Random thoughts on this show since I just finished it last night:

Never read the comics, so went in totally blind.

Erin Moriarty was the best part of this show. Intentionally made to look like an angel with her outfit. Looking forward to seeing her career.

Christian camp was way over-the-top and a little eye-rolling but it at least fit in with the theme of the show. Of course the 'pray the gay away' pastor was secretly gay. What an obvious trope.

Overall this show works because you can totally see it happening in the world today. It shows what happens when Superman isn't "Life, Liberty, and the American Way" and is instead "Money, Power, Women, and Fame"

I thought the cliff-hanger was actually a little too big. I think these series should have seasons that really stand on their own, but looking at season 1 as a stand-alone season, not much was actually resolved. The good news is we are getting a season 2. But season 2 should really be season 1 part 2.

So Amazon dropped the trailer for season 2 and quickly pulled it. Watch it before the copyright claims.

Not making things political (I leave that on F16) and really just making observations but it seems interesting to say the least that they take a character, who, in the comics, is a raging quite literally Nazi aryan wonder boy and make this character into a young black clad, social media pushing antifa-ish looking girl from Portland (and originally homelander saying Seattle seems to play into it). With "Nazi" being such a common thing being said these days, whether you agree with its use or not, it seemed like an obvious tie in to make this character blonde, blue eyed, minority hating, give me Libenschraum, and they avoided it. She did remark on his blue eyes so maybe thats a tell that she'll reveal that side of her. I don't know. Just think it's interesting.

Also, the actor who plays homelander is noticeably thinner. I wonder if it's on purpose or it was done intentionally to show homelanders likely forthcoming vulnerability.

As I read over my post, I think went into too deep but I blame west world for that.

The idea of equating a Nazi into an Antifa type rings pretty true for some people, and as offensive as the church camp for others. I'd think it would make for interesting parallels.

While parts of that conference were very stereo typical... I thought they really nailed the shame heaped on someone who doesn't hold up to the purity culture... and if you don't keep to that standard... it is best to lie about it so that everyone else can try to hold to that near impossible standard and feel shame if they don't hold up to it and they learn to lie about it to keep up the appearance... often (and in this case) the leaders have the outward appearance of being perfect... but they don't hold to this integrity privately.

Disclaimer... I am a recovering/former evangelical so i enjoy seeing this type of behavior called out publicly

The purity culture is actually kinda scary and even sinister. I have personally seen far more lives damaged or destroyed by this movement than any other single entity outside of radical Islam. In my day, coming out as a non-believer or other non purist ideal was just as stressful and even dangerous as someone coming out of the closet. The shaming I have seen directed against teenage kids by adults will always stay with me.

To keep this in entertainment, some of y'all may think it is an extreme that the show went to. It may not be prevalent, but it happens.

I was a social pariah at the church my parents forced me to go to growing up because I wasn't filled with the holy spirit enough for them. I know first hand how the adults treat young people that they don't think are living up to whatever ridiculous standard they have.

I thought the conference and what not was absolutely perfect. I have been to way too many of those types of things as a kid. Looking back it is so weird to think about the tens of thousands of youth all little Christian carbon copies of each other attending these things. Honestly, I dont think it showed the reality of what some of those conferences actually look like.

Anyways, I binged the hell out of this show over the last week and I am enjoying reading the discussion here on it.
