Finally watched Dave yesterday. Freaking awesome. I don't agree with him politically on many issues and I don't think his perspectives are right, but who freaking cares? Most comedians have different views than mine. It comes down to: is it funny? With Dave, the answer is obviously yes. If you're funny, I'll listen to you preach your message even if I think the message is flawed to some degree. Heck, I just watched a special that became instantly famous for making fun of LGBTs, especially Ts, and I have also considered Eddie Izzard to be one of my favorite comics for some 20 years now. I am only looking to laugh, and I will laugh at anything, no matter how benign or heinous or personal or abstract, if it's funny.
Is it funny? That's all that matters in comedy. That's why Seinfeld and his attitude that he preaches is so refreshing. He never strays from that one simple truth: if it's funny, it's good. Literally nothing else matters. Cuss, offend people, do clean comedy, do jokes about raping children or jokes about hot pockets. If it was funny, it was good.
This was good. I don't think it was his funniest material ever, simply because he spends more time now trying to speak to issues using comedy rather than just making comedy for comedy's sake, but it was still good. Probably the best of these 5 recent specials he's released. Killing Them Softly is still the gold standard for him though, IMO.
I'd rate it an 8/10 for pure comedy, and a 10/10 for comedy with a purpose.
