I was thinking about Pan's Labyrinth today and how good it was. An amazing juxtaposition of a masochistic warmongering sociopath and a childhood fantasy - both stories told so well.
95 percent on RT, 8.2 on IMDB, and it only made 83
Million worldwide. And it's not like it comes up often in discussions either.
What other respected movies don't get their due?

Event Horizon. I've always thought it was a truly scary movie that received fairly average reviews. It's almost 20 years old now and still creeps me out.

Rushmore was Wes Anderson's 2nd film, so I think people still didn't understand his greatness yet. Thank goodness Murray had the vision to sign on to the project.

Scott Pilgrim vs the World is a GREAT film and if I hadn't stumbled across it on Netflix I still wouldn't have known about it.

Had no expectations when I watched it and definitely might be my favorite Cruise movie.

I think Pan's Labyrinth was hurt in the box office by being a foreign movie from an at the time unknown director. Guillermo wasn't quite famous yet - as I recall, it was actually this one that kind of catapulted him up and really gave his english-speaking movies more momentum that allowed him to become famous as a director.

To contribute: Doomsday. It's a super fun, well-written movie that I've found very few people have even heard of.

If any Wes Anderson movie fits this category it would be this one:

56% on Rotten Tomatoes.
But I love this one for many reasons. But I get why it is not universally acclaimed.

Another of my favorites (that just like Life Aquatic has an unbelievable cast full of recognizable names), yet somehow just got lost:

Excellent choice my friend. I know at least half the lines by heart.

Anderson's greatest work to date IMO is The Grande Budapest Hotel, but after that The Life Aquatic is my favorite Andersen Opas.
