Finished Season 3 last night. Great season!

I do have a few questions/comments:

1. Why was Wyatt living in Charles Wilkes's house on the lake? (or was that not Wilkes's house?)

2. How exactly did Ben know of his estranged sister's whereabouts- I don't remember that being explained as to why he showed up in the first place. Honestly he turned out to being the most sympathetic character in the season, but he was teed up to being way more sinister, so that was rather interesting.

3. Why did Helen go for the confession and immunity agreement for Marty- was she sincerely trying to get the Byrd family to go away peacefully or was she maliciously trying to get Marty arrested and put away (either of which with the intent of taking over the casino operation?

1) he was breaking into houses and squatting Ah yes, but that house looked like Wikles's house
2) probably not that difficult to find them I would imagine
3) she was setting him up to make it look like he was going to rat on the cartel so he would be killed makes sense

I don't understand the Zeke story line. Why on earth does Wendy want another kid with everything going on - especially when it keeps crazy Darlene closer to them. Let Darlene worry about the kid - it keeps her occupied and out of the picture. Is it just guilt over what happened to Zeke's family?

I'm on episode 8 and not reading the thread but

Ben finding out he was being committed and watching Wendy weep while she listened made me cry for real. That was amazing acting on both sides...when you see someone in pain in a way that you can't do anything to help and it just rips your heart out. The helplessness on both sides was palpable

I took it as Wendy, in her mind, can never lose right now so she pushes this unwinnable battle to the extreme. I get compassion for babies, but the ruthless ***** is screwing over people just to get another casino. As someone pointed out, she is full blown Walt and can't even accept a minor setback without destroying something else.

I completely forgot the pyscho granny had a share in the casino. I knew it was built on her land but I thought they screwed them out of it. Hard to remember **** from 18 months ago

Agreed. All Netflix Season 2+ should start with recaps.

Helen went to the fbi (episode 9 or 10) with forged documents stating Marty was going to confess

Nevermind, I thought he asked why did Wendy want Marty to testify.

Wilkes doesn't have a family, right? So the woman and kids discovering Wyatt means it wasn't Wilkes' house.

Ben is 100% dead. They cut away and didn't show it because it wasn't needed. Nelson walking towards him and the look of realization on Ben's face was enough to get the point across.

It reminded me somewhat of the scene in the Wire when a certain character was walking toward his fate and everyone knew it by the the time the scene faded, roll credits.
I think Ben May be alive and that is how Marty gets Ruth to come back to the Byrds in season 4. (and keeps Jonah from going off the deep end).

I am not saying I agree with that storyline, I am just taking a stab at why they didn't show it, and they knew they (Marty and Nelson) couldn't tell Wendy because her reaction had to be sincere. If Nelson was already on team Byrd, it's not that big of a stretch.

I dont fully trust any character death unless I see their body bleeding out and then dead in a casket.

if the show is on CW or has any supernatural element, I dont fully trust it even then.

Ben is definitely dead. Ozark has surprise twists to entertain the viewer, but not that kind.

Ben is a great character for 80% of the show. The problem comes with how the writers address bipolar disorder after he confronts Helen and subsequently goes into hiding.

In reality, people with bipolar disorder act like they are unstoppable and can singlehandedly fly to the moon one moment then later they are so down on themselves that they have no reason to get off the couch.

The way the writers approach Ben in the last couple episodes was that he had an IQ of 50. Someone would tell him "Whatever you do, don't do X", he would then go do X and when confronted with it, we would say "Oh yeah! I forgot! I'm sooooo stupid!"

If they tweaked the writing just a bit where his character was acting reckless and not stupid (or even as if he messed up while confident he could outsmart someone else), it would have made a big difference.

That's a great point, and very well said. Whatever Ben had, it wasn't bipolar disorder. It was becomes-a-slow-angry- ten-year-old disorder.

What is it, do you think, the writers had Ben set on doing?

Like when he wondered out his car to go talk to some randos and tell them everything.

Was he just dead set on getting the police involved and having his sister arrested hoping that it would make her do the right thing and turn on her boss and stop living a criminal life?

Or was he just so out of control, he didn't know what he wanted and just kept acting out out of stupidity?

I thought season 3 was really slow through the middle. The Ben story was not good. As stated, the actor did great. Bateman is getting much better at directing. He was not good in season 1 and has showed steady improvement. I think they covered the whole end the cartel war a little too quickly. That is a major play and they just dreamed up and executed it in like 7 minutes. It came across as, oh crap, last episode, better sew some things up quick. 6.5/10

I agree. The Ben scenes became similar to the torture porn in Handmaid's Tale. Just over the top and unnecessary. I just don't like adding a character that we have no history with, just for him to be an obnoxious thorn, then get killed off.

I feel like every season had its lull in the middle. I think that's pretty common with these extended dramas now, so no big deal.

Ozark is the poor man's Breaking Bad. And I say that as a huge Ozark fan. I just don't see how you could like one and not the other, especially if Ozark is the only one you've seen.

Yes. This is drama porn. Easy to watch and binge because "ZOMG! Explosion! Ruth cussing! Look over there now!, that last episode didn't matter. New death!"

Breaking Bad one of the best dramas of all time and not everyone is willing to put in the mental commitment to take that on so they could lose interest. Most can but I could definitely see how some would want to watch Ozark and not commit to BB
Texaggie7nine
How long do you want to ignore this user?
My wife loves Ozark and had a harder time with BB. I basically had to beg her to stay with it after the 1st season. It was too slow and drawn out for her. Eventually she got more into BB and enjoyed it, but I think she would still place Ozark above it because it's more compact and it focuses on both the husband and the wife more equally at least this past season, whereas BB was mainly just Walt and Jesse.

Pace has never been something that bothered me, personally, but yeah, I guess I could see how the pacing of BB could be an issue. At least toward the beginning. But the second half feels like it flies.
fig96

I think it's fair to say that BB took a bit to find its feet, and it's definitely a different show at the end than it was at the beginning. But if you enjoyed Ozark I don't know how you wouldn't be a fan of BB.
