The thing I think made the pace of BB work was the tease in every episode. It kept you on the edge like an old western. Even when nothing is happening, something could happen.

BB is a master class in pacing, but i can see how it's not for everyone. lol I told my dad to watch it a few years ago and he stopped pretty early in S1 during the bathtub scene (you know which one). That type of graphic violence with a slower pace could turn some people off early. But everyone i know that's given it a chance has never regretted it.

Also, I need to catch up with Better Call Saul. I watched the first 2 seasons and then it just fell off my radar. Sounds like they've recaptured that same spirit from BB.

Just finished S3.

A few non spoiler thoughts...
- Laura Linney does an unbelievable job. Bateman is very good as well.
- The guy playing Ben is so talented but.... SO much time spent dealing with him making blatantly stupid decisions. I agree with the above poster that this is not indicative of bipolar disorder necessarily. It's just like the writers randomly shifted from "he's bipolar and unpredictable" to... "he's really dumb."
- Ruth gets a lot of love but I think she's overrated. There are a lot of great acting performances but she just strikes me as corny half the time.
- The last 2 episodes are great.

This show has flashes of absolute brilliance, and then there are times when I'm pretty ready for the episode to be over.

I think 6 or 7 out of 10 is about right... but definitely worth the watch.

I like Ozark and I hated Breaking Bad and I don't think it had anything to do with the pacing or intellectualism of the show.

I thought Walter White was a crap human being from beginning to end and he got worse and worse. He was a sniveling pathetic self centered greedy rat and I never once wanted anything good for him the entire show. Most of the characters were beyond distasteful. The only reason I kept watching the show was because my boyfriend promised me steak dinners per season I watched (so 15 steak dinners..worth it). I've never rooted for a character death the way I did when Skyler got the knife and went after WW.

I like Jason Bateman's character and him as an actor. I think the kids are awesome characters. Ruth is an incredible character. The acting on the show is fantastic. I care about what happens to them. Even lawyer lady became a bit human when her kid was introduced.

Also, for those of you whose wives liked Ozark, have them watch Good Girls. It's basically a funny female cast version of Ozark and it's pretty much a delight.

Also, your wives don't like Breaking Bad.. shocker.. the premise is about a ****ty husband who only becomes a worse husband, lies and hides his illness, then his crimes from his wife, rapes her, pretty much forces her to get involved, holds her hostage... and somehow he's the hero of the show.... whereas in Ozark, the husband and wife hold at least somewhat equal power. Shocker that they like one more than the other.

Skyler sucked.

she was a victim and the societal hate for her is super wierd and disturbing to me, but let's not derail the thread for that argument.

I will never understand why characters need to be "likeable" or morally agreeable for certain viewers to stick with a show/movie. All I care about is compelling, well-written drama, and that's what Breaking Bad was. Yes, I need to understand a character's motivations, but what I don't understand is needing to root for a "good guy." As long as Walter got what he deserved in the end, great storytelling is all needed to get me there.

I don't know who you're wife is but my husband and I loved BB. Had to binge and catch up but happily did so. I like Ozark as well but I'm tired of HW shoving "strong" female head of families down my throat. Wendy wanted power and she got it at the cost of her brother's life. So much for female empowerment. Wendy is now Hillary.

I don't have a wife, just giving one female's perspective. I enjoy shows, book, movies, etc more when I get emotionally invested in characters. I struggled with BB because I disliked every character. I also completely am at odds with the rest of humanity on the subject because skyler and the sister in law were the only characters I came close to liking... And people are weirdly emotional about how much they hated those two and it makes me very uncomfortable.

Plenty of women do like BB. I think it's absurd to try to brush it off as they dont think "deep" enough or something if they like this. But if you have questions how/why someone likes one and not the other, I was just tellin y'all how it is for me.

Wendy is awful. She used to be balanced and her character arc has really made her the villain. Her acting and the pain she had watching Ben was absolutely gut wrenching though. She has become a villain but she definitely isn't a victim.
(also, I really dont think she's the head of the household.. she tries, but Marty keeps everything/everyone together and still mostly calls the shots.. any time she does something he asks her not to, she goes behind his back...because if he knew, he'd stop her.)

edit: what does HW stand for?

If you don't mind me asking, are you and mazzag08 husband and wife? Related? The similarities in handles confused the heck out of me for quite some time.

And WW is one of my favorite TV characters. Probably second to Tony Soprano. Unlike my dislike for Skyler, I always liked Carmela and was on her side. She put up with the back stabbing in her social circles and held her head up.

Finished last night.

I'm going to miss the Marty-Ruth team and I will hate seeing Ruth on Darlene's team. Marty is too calculated and cold-blooded to stand up for her and didn't appreciate her enough. Ugh.

I thought the therapist was funny every session and I lol'd when she pulled up in the McLaren.

Ben character had some good acting - classroom at the beginning of the season and cab ride at the end stand out, but introducing that character to wreak havoc and advance the story did seem cheesily forced.

We watched all 3 seasons since the SIP and finished 3 night before last.

Wende - my wife hates her. Doesn't make it easier that neither of us like Laura Linney anyway (something about her acting style and face) but she HATES her.

When Ben was committed and Ruth visited him in the hospital punched me in the gut. Really good acting. Zero sorrow for Wende however.

Glad I wasn't the only one that though Ben's track got really weird and just flat annoying. I finally turned to my wife and said "he's getting dumber, this is stupid".

It was also fun to realize I was rooting for Darlene to give zero F's and start wrecking stuff towards the end.

Am I the only one who thinks just about everyone on Ozark is also awful? I feel like neither it nor BB is your kind of show if you're looking to root for good people.
swimmerbabe11

weren't there only 5 seasons? I forget.

I guess it seems high maintenance out of context, but it was mostly all in good fun. we were long distance, so it was basically a silly way of figuring out date nights for when we got to see each other. I took him to top golf in exchange for a season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

I think what bothered me is that they were fairly awful regardless of criminal mastermind stuff. before they "broke bad", they were awful.

I also used to dislike the trend of anti-hero quite a bit more. I want someone to wear a white hat. I think ozark makes you like the character enough before it reveals their flaws, that you are a bit Stockholm syndromed into defending them.

For instance, I dont think Ruth is a rotten person. I think she is a bit of a victim of circumstances....nature vs nurture and all that, but she's got a good heart. she was way nicer to Marty for a long time than he deserved. If anything made me dislike marty, it was the way he treated her. Ill probably defend almost anything she does at this point.

Ruth stole Marty's money and tried to kill him when she barely knew him. But you know.. she isn't really that rotten. At least she didn't hide an illness from Marty. Now THAT would have been a really crappy thing to do.
