The only cop show that comes close to The Wire is The Shield.

Period.
Order of best shows all time imo are:

1. The Wire
2. Breaking Bad
3. The Shield

I've been contemplating recently going back and watching The Shield in its entirety again. So great and I feel it doesn't get the credit it deserves. Or maybe it's just that a ton of people I know have never watched it.

The Shield walked so that Breaking Bad could run

I finished The Wire for the first time last week. I am in season 3 for Breaking Bad. I still dont think any are as good as the Sopranos though.

Good to see you made it through the first three (a complaint by many that it is too slow). You're about to be in for quite a ride.

Hell now I want to go back and rewatch all of The Wire for a 4th time.

I freakin love The Shield. I have it on dvd & I've watched it through 5 times. Do a rewatch! I did one about 4 months ago. I hate that not very many people have seen it. I made my 3 roommates watch it with me in college & they loved it. I used to loan my dvds to my dad & another couple friends so they could watch it. It was crazy how many people had never heard of it. It's right up there at the top of the list for me.

I have the full box set and gave it to a buddy of mine who loves all of these great shows and he's sat on it for a year and a half without watching always claiming he doesn't have the time.

Well it's time for me to take it back!

It's wild to me what a major star that Wallace became. I can't remember when exactly it registered for me but I would hear things about this Michael B. Jordan actor and saw a film he was in and didn't even realize at first it was the same guy/kid so many years later.

And yes, Walon, played by the great Steve Earle definitely a recovering addict and I freaking love this song played at the end of season 2 IIRC:

i hate promoting the assclown, but i used to subscribe to orangebloods and geoff ketchum somehow had michael b jordan on his radio show about 7-8 years ago. the interview was awkard as all hell cause mike had no idea who fat ketch was but it was hilarious how much he sucked up to a child actor. the amount of white guilt displayed by ketchum was enough to even make a brown man sick (my co-worker who was listening).

I remember how disappointed I was when Season 2 started but as it went on I liked it more and more. I ended up really liking the season and thought the Sobatka's were great.

Nick's busty GF wasn't too bad either.

I loved Season 2 of the Wire. I know that puts me in the minority....but I always thought Season 2 was criminally underrated.

Looking back at it, I think it helped the pacing of the show for Mcnulty and the other cops to battle Avon Barskdale/Stringer Bell over three seasons instead of two.

It seems like a lot of people wish that Season 2 did not happen and the show just skipped from season 1 to season 3.
The slow build up is what makes Season 3 such compelling TV.

Nick Sobotka and Frog make for one of my favorite, and funniest scenes in the entire show.

If interested the ringer just started an episode by episode breakdown. It's called Way Down in the Hole. It's trying to be Binge Mode for The Wire. They are 3 eps in and it's still finding it's feet, but fun.

Been listening to this. Pretty interesting, but the inner Star Wars nerd was outraged when the guy suggested George Lucas didn't plan on Darth Vader being Luke's dad during the ANH, and he just retconned it in later.

Well actually.....

Go listen to the Binge Mode podcasts on Star Wars. I'm not a huge SW fan, but I they are great podcasts and make me enjoy the movies even more. They are very pro Lucas, but there is very strong evidence that he did make that up between movies. (Pulled it off great).

Also, Darth Vader doesn't mean Dark Father. You know you started that rumor? George Lucas. Apparently he tried a few other names for Vader first that would have been hilarious. Darth Vader was almost Darth Wilson.

loved that episode.

Yea, Lucas definitely made up some stuff on the fly that worked out pretty well. Didn't he kinda just make up the "force" rules as he went along too?

I'm in the minority, but since it was brought up...

Breaking Bad is an unbelievable piece of crap that should never be raised in the same conversation as The Wire.

Can an old white man in a silly hat take down the Mexican Mafia solo? Ok. That show started off ok, but then got based on the stupidest of premises. The heisenberg persona can kiss my ass

But that stupid fake ass serial killer newspaper plot in season 5 of the wire was so stupid that many wire fans pretend the season doesn't even exist. Nobody ever advised anyone to skip a season of BrBa.

Even worse, except for a few things like Brother Mazone, the Wire had a realistic aspect that made it that much better. In a way, it sorta blew the lid off the naive view that shows like CSI presented. The fake serial killer plot shot that whole notion to hell in my mind. It made me think, "well clearly they are pulling that out of their ass... I wonder how much of the past 4 seasons were pulled out of their ass?" It knocked the other seasons down a notch too.

It's different than Game of Thrones where the last 2 seasons sucked, but the first several are still as good as they were originally.

You certainly are in the minority, and I guess you didn't watch very closely because the old white man had nothing to do with taking down the Mexican Mafia.

Exactly. At the time all of white middle America (self included) who had been praising the "incredible realness" of s1-4 suddenly found themselves wondering if we had all been played. Maybe none of it was real and authentic. Still fantastic television making, but crippled by the perceived loss of authenticity.

I don't know how real the cop stuff is, but I do know about inner city education, and The Wire is by far the most realistic with the way it handles urban education.
