Well, this certainly took some doing.

In all, I've picked out 140 of the best moments from the theatrical versions of Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and Return of the King. They are presented here in 35 groups of 4, with each group named for a poster from BES's Lord of the Rings thread that he started in January 2020.

The groups were chosen with a random # generator. It's resulted in some groups that are top heavy and some that are not fantastic. Some groups have 4 entries from one movie even. But random seems a lot better than me trying to seed them all.

So the rules are pretty simple - vote for your favorite moment from each group. That equals 35 automatic qualifiers for a field of 64. The next 29 highest vote getters earn the 29 wild cards. They'll be seeded according to # of votes. The seeding won't be perfect but as we saw in the Marvel tournament with the same format, the cream inevitably rises to the top.

Take your time voting, there are a lot of groups. If you're just a casual fan, you're going to be on Wikipedia or YouTube a lot today. Around midnight I'll cap the voting and seed the tournament.

Two hours in, only 2 entries over 80%. Interestingly enough, one group has only two entries getting votes and it's tied 50%-50%.

Agree. FOTR is also the best of the three movies.

I'm not sure on the staff question. Either way it will stay in there, I doubt it's got much legs beyond the first round anyways.

I grew up thinking a pint was huge because of of this scene. I was certainly in college and possibly legally permitted or order one of my own before I understood the joke.

I haven't watched any of these in their entirety since my kids were born (2012). I was surprised how emotionally charged I was in remembering a ton of them, beyond my main favorites - which are almost all related to Rohan. Plus it led me to discover many ridiculous gifs.

So many good moments. I had to choose Theoden's speech in the Hunter2012 group, but when the Nazgul attack the faux hobbits in the Prancing Pony was one of the most tense moments in a theater I can remember. That was a super tough selection for me.

Damn, so many great moments.

One interesting thing for me. Growing up, when I first watched FOTR (and for a year or two after that), I never really liked Boromir and felt almost nothing at his death scene. I was 13 at the time.

As I got older, the more and more I related with Boromir and understood his perspective. (Admittedly, the Extended Editions went a long way to getting me there, too. A lot of extra Boromir scenes.)

And now, I tear up every single time at his death scene. As far as I'm concerned, he has the single most heroic death in the series.

I almost missed out on this movie trilogy gem! When Fellowship first came out my thought was "Oh, that's that dungeons and dragons book/movie for nerds". I ended up seeing it right before it left the big screen cause I was out of town and there was nothing else to see. Bang, instant fan!

2 years later I had all the extended versions on DVD and had read all the books.

I was so hyped for the first movie I went to the mall to get the soundtrack which they were releasing a week early - it was the last CD I ever bought.

The music/movie store clerk had no idea what I was talking about. They had it just sitting in the middle of the stack with everything else in alphabetical order, no special display or anything.

I started at the begining of brian's thread and gave a group to each new poster I saw, you must have been on a later page. On the flip side, I'm pretty sure I'm doing a similar tourney for Game of Thrones next. You might have a shot to get a bracket there.

When Benny was 5 or 6, I introduced him simply to the Battle of Helm's Deep to see if he could handle it because I wanted to watch the whole trilogy with him.

I am not sure he blinked more than a dozen times.

So then we watched the whole series and anything to do with the Ents is his favorite.
