Immediately posting again after watching the MoS trailer...

I have changed my mind and do not want a Best Score bracket. I would have to build an effigy of Muckraker and invite all the neighborhood kids to come by to light it on fire and beat it with sticks, if LotR did not win.

It's been a minute, is that Gandalf and the Balrog falling down to the foot of the mountain?

I think it was the last expansion to LOTRO that was added when I was still playing but Moria was awesome. That part (the basement was all weird and disfigured with weird or s because of the pure evil or whatever from the Balrog's fall).

Does it fall after "Pippin helps Gandalf light the beacons" in the heddleston Group or does it come before "Gondor calls for aid! AND ROHAN WILL ANSWER! -" in the ChipFTAC01 Group?

Ugh, I'm sick. That might be my favorite sequence in the movie. Due to the emotional/plot implications, the incredible cinematography /CGI, and fantastic scoring. And it was in my group?! For shame.

This is absolutely shameful. The Lighting of the Beacons sequence is magnificent.

I wonder if voters assumed this JUST meant Pipping lighting the beacon?

It is. And those few seconds in particular give me chills because of that imagery and the music that accompanies it. So good.

The beacons got kinda shafted in this because the scene was split into two moments. I think everyone in here agrees the sequence is up there with the best though.

i didn't vote for "pippin lighting the beacons" because i thought pippin's part in it was written/edited to be a bit cheesy.

the beacons lighting from mountaintop to mountaintop was epic, and i wish i could have voted for just that

total brag here, but i definitely nerded out when i went to new zealand last august, lol

Thinking about actors like Karl Ubran and Ian McKellen and Sean Bean and Hugo Weaving, maybe the next tournament should be greatest nerd genre actor.

Sir Ian is Gandalf and Magneto. Urban is Eomer and Dredd and McCoy and Skurge. Sean Bean is Boromir and Ned Stark. Hugo is Elrond and Red Skull and Smith.

The only problem is I can't see how Harrison Ford doesn't win as Han Solo/Dr. Jones. But it might be fun anyways.

My other thoughts are GOT Moments in a similar style to this one and Marvel moments.

Best soundtrack

Best movie posters.

Those latter 2 I would probably just have a thread for nominations and go from there so you guys would be slightly less pissy than normal.

Best "cult classics" could be an interesting one, but you'd have to come up with some credentials (like a ceiling for domestic box office).

already 40 votes in today, have 2 matchups separated by 1 or 2 votes.

4 lower seeds currently winning, one by an outlandish total.

I think the moments of levity play well in these kinds of contests. You have so many incredible battle scenes and speeches in these movies. At least for me, they all kind of run together. So when you get a whole bunch of epic speeches and battles facing off, I tend to gravitate towards those scenes that provided a little respite, like PO-TAY-TOES or "or would you like me to find you a box".

It's similar to the Marvel Moments bracket where ll of the fights scenes are undoubtedly awesome, but "He's a friend from work" or Starlord dancing are awesome singular moments in this maelstrom of action.

This is so tough. These might be the two best-adapted scenes an any of the movies. I have to give Gandalf the edge here because, as magnificent as the latter scene is, it kind of loses this:
Quote:

Suddenly the king cried to Snowmane and the horse sprang away. Behind him his banner blew in the wind, white horse upon a field of green, but he outpaced it. After him thundered the knights of his house, but he was ever before them. Eomer rode there, the white horsetail on his helm floating in his speed, and the front of the first eored roared like a breaker foaming to the shore, but Theoden could not be overtaken. Fey he seemed, or the battle-fury of his fathers ran like new fire in his veins, and he was borne up on Snowmane like a god of old, even as Orome the Great in the battle of the Valar when the world was young. His golden shield was uncovered, and lo! it shone like an image of the Sun, and the grass flamed into green about the white feet of his steed.

#1 is interesting because it takes a dynamic between Aragorn and Eomer and replaces the latter with Theoden. They promise to "draw swords together" and it happens on the Pelennor Fields as the tide finally turns in their favor for good. Just before that, while Eomer thinks he's making his last stand, he chants,
Quote:

Out of dark, out of dark to the day's rising
I came singing in the sun, sword unsheathing.
To hope's end I rode and to heart's breaking:
Now for wrath, now for ruin and a red nightfall!
Another close one, but I have to vote for Sam because of how much Theoden's line reminds me of Pelennor Fields, which I consider a weaker adaptation.

#6, because not a single one of you can read that line without hearing horns playing the Rohan theme. I never really cared for #7 until I realized, thanks to comments on this thread, that it is kind of a stand-in for the Scouring of the Shire. In a line, it tells us the most important ideas that the chapter in the book shows us. I don't really like it as a substitute, but I supposed it's preferable to adding another hour to the movie.

I laughed really hard at #3 in the theater. That doesn't make it an epic moment. I think we are at the point in this bracket where epic starts trumping wit.

Boromir. Everyone loves a redemption story, and this is the culmination of an arc that takes you from suspicion to resentment to anger to pity to grief.

Well I voted against Rohan showing up on the Pelennor fields; I guess I can't do it twice. By way of comparison, Theoden's speech in the book comes a little while before the charge, and the tension builds much more slowly:
Quote:

Now is the hour come, Riders of the Mark, sons of Eorl! Foes and fire are before you, and your homes far behind. Yet, though you fight on an alien field, the glory you reap there shall be your own for ever. Oaths you have taken: now fulfill them all , to lord and land and league of friendship!

I'll be honest with you guys, it's been about 25 years since I read the first book, and I don't think I finished them then, nor have I tried since the movies came out. So I'm a movies only guy. And with that frame of reference, I'll tell you that the nazgul smelling the ring in the first movie was such an epic moment for me from a movies only perspective. Up until then, you don't really understand what the big deal is. Gandalf is freaking people out about how serious it is.

When the nazgul comes for the ring in the middle of the day, in the middle of the road, and you see that thing with the worms and bugs, the hobbits are terrified, and Frodo is going all zombie because of it...damn!

That scene thumps with license plate rattling power.
Fat Bib Fortuna
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Although it appears to have reached the end its road vs. the Samwise Gamgee Runaway Freight Train today, I really wanted to say how impressed I am with how far along the Gates of Argonath moment made it with the voters here. That to me is the quintessential moment of how lovingly this trilogy was made. If you haven't read the books, that scene is just a blip on the radar in the film, especially since it comes post-Gandalf death and pre-Boromir betrayal. But they made these incredible models and blended it with the characters on the river and let Aragorn give you a 10-second history lesson that doesn't mean anything in the grand scheme of things but is such a big deal for fans of the books.

Quote:

"Begone, foul dwimmerlaik, lord of carrion! Leave the dead in peace!"

A cold voice answered: "Come not between the Nazgul and his prey! Or he will not slay thee in thy turn. He will bear thee away to the houses of lamentation, beyond all darkness, where thy flesh shall be devoured, and thy shrivelled mind be left naked to the Lidless Eye."

A sword rang as it was drawn. "Do what you will; but I will hinder you if I may."

"Hinder me? Thou fool. No living man may hinder me!"

Then Merry heard of all sounds in that hour the strangest. It seemed that Dernhelm laughed, and the clear voice was like the ring of steel. "But no living man am I! You look upon a woman. Eowyn I am, Eomund's daughter. You stand between me and my lord and kin. Begone, if you be not deathless! For living or dark undead, I will smite you, if you touch him."

...The helm of her secrecy had fallen from her, and her bright hair, released from its bonds, gleamed with pale gold upon her shoulders. Her eyes grey as the sea were hard and fell, and yet tears were on her cheek. A sword was in her hand, and she raised her shield against the horror of her enemy's eyes.

Absolutely better in the book, but honestly I have a bigger gripe with how Jackson handles the Witch King than Eowyn.
