How long do you want to ignore this user?
The basics.

1. Yes, SNL is still on the air.

2. You're right, it was much better when you were watching it.

3. I took the 75 people who were cast members for at least 3 seasons and added Chevy Chase (2 seasons) as an exemption. 76 cast members in 19 groups of 4 selected by random number generator.

4. You vote for your favorite in each group. If you have more than one favorite, vote more than once! I'll count them all, even if you're legally dead!

5. The top 64 vote-getters after about 36 hours will be reseeded and the knock-out round will begin.

6. I don't care what criteria you use to vite, it's YOUR FAVORITE. It can be on the show performance, overall career, who you hate the least, it really doesn't matter. If you don't know they are, don't vote for them. Hell, I don't know who some of them are either.

7. Let's try to keep it positive, not talk about who you hate, who is ugly, or whose politics you despise.

8. Don't ask where Steve Martin is, he was never a cast member. I know, King Tut, etc.

I suspect this is going to be tremendously skewed by the age groups. I grew up watching Adam Sandler, Chris Farley, Rob Schneider, Mike Myers, Dana Carvey, etc. So my answers are going to be heavily weighted toward that time frame.

I do know

He sucks

The answer should be Phil Hartman

I can accept Dan Akroyd or Gilda Radner.

I love Dennis Miller, but he was only good for Weekend Update

He is the only name I knew other than WIll Ferrell's.

Not remotely ashamed of it

Wasn't he that guy in the dance club movie with Will Ferrell?

That's because that was easily the best era.

I would say the Belushi/Akroyd era, the Sandler/Farley era, and the Samberg/Hader era had the most loaded casts.

Only person I'm surprised isn't on here over anyone else is Kate McKinnon. The Alien Encounter skit is in my top 20 or so SNL skits.

Wait, McKinnon didn't make it but Alex Moffat did?

Muck's gonna have to explain that one.

And definitely agree with this. When I think of SNL, I think of those 3 eras.

Though the Ferrell/Fallon/Shannon era was pretty damn good too. That's the one that I would call out as #1 if we went by the "what was on when you were in junior high" rule, but I think it's probably 4th.

Ah I see you have it in the poll but Vanessa Bayer in your OP. Not that it matters, Sandler should kill her.

Shannon / Wiig was a toughie for me.

Went with Shannon but it's damn close.

Yeah I tweaked it around some after I separated them but before I posted it, but didn't update the original sheet. I'll hand in my resignation at the end of the day.

That was surprisingly easy for me although the second round on is going to be HARD.

So many names I don't know and I've been watching for 30+ years!

People always talk up Sandler/Spade/Farley. They definitely had their moments, but I will contend that it was actually the Hartman/Carvey/Myers overlap that made the former group good as feature players. There were a couple of years in the mid 90s that were terrible, and Sandler et al were the main players at that time.

I voted for a lot of the glue guys like Maya Rudolph and Kevin Nealon - they may not have had star characters but they were crucial in a lot of these bits.

Chris Parnell, Darrell Hammond, guys like that.

I've thought about doing this thread a few times, but it's hard because you'd have to break it up into roles to do it right. It's hard to compare Phil Hartman to Bill Murray.
These are the categories and examples of people in each for me. Some people fill multiple roles, but I went what I primarily think of them as.
Super Stars
Will Ferrell
Bill Murray
John Belushi
Chris Farley
Adam Sandler
Chevy Chase
Eddie Murphy

Writers
Dan Aykroyd
Tina Fey

Role-Players (They aren't the lead of every sketch, but if you need some random part, they can pull it off and make the whole sketch better)
Mike Meyers
Kristen Wiig
Jason Sudeikis
Gilda Radner
Phil Hartman
Kate McKinnon

Weekend Udpate
Collin Quinn
Dennis Miller
Norm McDonald
Seth Meyers

Impressionists
Bill Hader
Dana Carvey
Melissa Villasenor
Darrell Hammond

EDIT to add the
Odd-Balls (not afraid to get weird and take us on a crazy journey)
Will Forte
Jim Breuer
Molly Shannon
Aidy Bryant
Chris Kattan
Cheri Oteri
Jane Curtin

FIFY. you accidentally left Mike Myers off of the Super Star group.

This reoccuring character alone gets him in.

Sorry, didn't mean it that way. You're braver than me. The thought of trying to break it into brackets for roles first, then building a dream cast with the best of each role was what I thought of attempting, but never had the guts or time to do.
Quad Dog

All respect to Myers but he never had the cross over roles. All his movies are him doing SNL role parts behind make up and costume.
The leading movie roles he's had not in a costume is pretty much Axe Murderer.

By crossover, do you mean dramatic roles?

Not sure why that matters.

Austin Powers and Shrek were massive franchises. Superstar level no matter how you want to slice it.

He may not be one now but he was definitely a superstar in the early 00's.
Quad Dog

Not dramatic roles, crossover into super star movie roles. I guess my point is that no one has ever said " Let's go see the new Mike Myers movie." It's always " Let's go see the the new Shrek, or Austin Powers, or Wayne's World movie" He's never just played the same role or himself in huge movies like the other guys on my list have. Will Ferrell is always just Will Ferrell to different degrees in huge movies. Myers is probably the best of making the most out of his characters, but they are characters, not him.
But it's my stupid internet list that makes sense to me.

I haven't said in over 15 years; let's go see an Adam Sanders Movie, or Will Ferrell movie, or a Chevy Chase movie, or an Eddie Murphy movie.

Also, why isn't Chris Rock in this category too? By your standard and what he did on Fargo this past year alone should get in this group.
