Belushi, Akroyd, and Murray are all legends, but their non SNL bodies of work are much much better than their SNL careers. If I were choosing the best of the three based on just SNL, I'd even say Akroyd was the best. They're extremely influential/foundational to the later generations of the show and we don't have the rest of the guys in this tournament without them, but none of them are top 4 cast members.

Can we just call it now and leave Hartman and Farley as co-champs?

Ugh, you're like my mom at a football game wanting the team winning to let the other team score some points so they can feel good about themselves.

I think if you had the entire cast vote on the greatest cast members, you'd get a Final Four with Belushi, Aykroyd, Gilda Radner, and maybe Eddie Murphy, Hartman, or Farley. The originals were shattering what comedy looked like on television, there's no other way to put it. They kicked down doors to let others come on and try things and push boundaries that otherwise wouldn't have existed.

Went to bed last night and there were 22 votes, tied 50%-50%

Checked again at 10 a.m., 66 votes, tied 50%-50%

71 votes now, 1 vote difference.

Think I'll cap it at midnight tonight if there's a winner.

I definitely agree, but I'd also say it's like comparing the Model T to the Mustang. One doesn't exist without the other, but I want to drive the Mustang. I'm not a car guy so that may be a horrible analogy. The originals are more without a doubt more important than Farley/Hartman/Ferrell/Carvey. But when I think about those 3 (and Chevy for that matter), I think about Caddyshack, Animal House, Fletch, and Ghostbusters before I think of their SNL stuff whereas with the final four we got I even still think of Ferrell's SNL run over Old School, Talledega Nights and Anchorman.

And the seeding killed Gilda Radner in this. She easily could have been in the elite 8 had it shaken a little different.

I'm sure they would all say that because that's just what people say. I'm sure Citizen Kane is wonderful in its own way and is very foundational for the history and backbone of film, but I'm going to take Jurassic Park everytime. But when you ask Spielberg I'll bet he's going to say some old classic.

For a different perspective that both confirms Farley's greatness and indicates age was a big factor in this contest, here are the top 10 from ranker:
1. Murphy
2. Farley
3. Murray
4. Ackroyd
5. Ferrel
6. Belushi
7. Carvey
8. Radner
9. Hartman
10. Fey

Eddie is getting a huge boost from his post-SNL career in that ranking.

Maybe. He was really funny when he hosted recently. If his old stuff was like that, I get the ranking.

Eddie saved SNL, it wouldn't still exist without him.
He came in at 1980, Lorne, the original cast, and writers had all left the show. After his first year the entire cast was fired but him and Joe Piscopo. Those two absolutely carried the show, all the other cast members were bit players to those two. Eddie is the only person to host the show as a cast members.
At the same time he also did Trading Places, 48 Hours , Beverly Hills Cop, and his Delirious and Raw stand up specials. He was 19 his first year at SNL..

Good to see Gilda Radner gets some love. IMO very underrated original cast member, then again she was amongst legends.

IDK about that. Eddie carried that show through a time where it could have died. I think Chris Rock summed up his greatness perfectly.

That ranker list is at least better than Rolling Stones ridiculous rankings.

Akroyd over rated in both along with Tina Fey.

This is a skit from 1990. I was at a classmates house working on a Cobol project, watching one of the all-time great SNL'S ever. Alec Baldwin was hosting and this skit was near the end of the show, maybe the last skit. Phil Hartman and Kevin Nealon are great, and this is probably among Jan Hooks' best work. It's not well-known, but i love it.

"Gosh, Brenda, you sure do stack those muffins real good."

Just love it.

One thing that sticks out to me when watching this is how much better they are doing in actually interacting with each other than what you often see now. It seems like for a while now many of the cast members don't even try to pretend that they aren't reading off of cue cards, sometimes going entire scenes without ever looking directly at the person they are having a conversation with.

Agree. They are all really into their characters, almost like a Play. And none of them break character, which I admit in some skits is very funny, but for this one, the fact that they don't break makes it even better.

I don't mind breaking character occassionally, especially if something especially hilarious is going on and it's clear they are trying not to. Some of the people on in the past decade seem to think breaking character is a valuable skillset. They have definitely gotten really bad about just blatantly reading cue cards, and I think it's because they don't really hire the right kinds of people as often anymore. Too many standups getting hired, which has nothing to do with sketch comedy.
