Saw it tonight. Agree that it's not great, but it's far from terrible like some are saying. Many have already said what makes it not great: too much story and too many characters. Imagine trying to tell the story of the Loki series in a single movie, and it doesn't even have as many primary characters as this.

I'm interested to see how they incorporate the Eternals going forward, and I'm even more excited for Blade and Black Knight.

I liked the movie, but it needed about 20 minutes cut and some humor.

Yeah I actually thought this was okay, but I came in with real low expectations based on the reviews.

One thing I'll say is I thought it was beautifully shot, like the scenery and spectacle of it was distracting from a meh plot.

Edit for another random thought that just popped in my head: how come Phastos was the one that could make stuff, and Makkari was the fast one, and not the other way around?

Extremely confused. You think the fat black guy should have been a speedster? Phastos made stuff because he was based on Hephaestus the greek god of blacksmiths and crafting stuff. Just like Thena was based on Athena the goddess of war. Or actually vice versa in the MCU.

Regarding the movie, I thought it was better than i expected although it's clearly mixed overall. Doubt I will watch it again.

I loved Makkari. Agree with someone else....that's how you do a speedster. She was awesome.

Was massively thrown by Phastos saying humanity can't be saved and then he's married with an adopted kid. What? That was illogical. And I always shake my head at the lamentations of Hiroshima. Japan attacked us first. Don't start something you can't finish.

I think the ongoing challenge marvel is going to have with introducing the cosmic phase is the sheer scale and power gaps. We've been told that Kang the Conqueror is the next antagonist yet we have celestial beings out there as big as Jupiter planting babies in all the planets. How do you remotely reconcile some of this stuff.

And introducing Black Knight in this was extremely random. Wife thought that was Fury at end but I guess it's not?

Anyway, onto the next one.

Except where the actress said that Makkari is faster than The Flash because her character can run faster than the speed of sound.

Okay, so this is a conversation I had with my son. When he first found out that I was going to be the fastest woman in the universe he said, 'No you're not.' He brought over his laptop and looked into the computer and said, 'Look! It's true! Flash is faster than Makkari.' But I'm sure Makkari...because she travels faster than the speed of sound.

I think they were just saying the names sound like Fast and Make.

Yeah, when I was watching and they said "We need to find Phastos" I thought they were going to look for the speedster

edit: I realize how stupid that sounds, now

I guess I can see that...if you have zero knowledge of the Greek Olympian Gods.

Fits right in with the perspective many in our society share that the United States is a bad place. I agree, don't start what you can't finish.

Every Disney property nowadays is obviously ticking boxes but this film is chock full of them. Those poor peaceful natives were fine until the evil Europeans and their technology!

Makkari's name is based on Mercury, the Roman god who has super speed.

Phastos's name is based on Hephaestus, the Greek god of fire and the forge. A weapons maker.

Noble Savage theory to the extreme in this.

You got it wrong, they were showing the Europeans bringing some freedom to the Aztecs.

Was definitely a lower tier Marvel movie, but didn't think it was as bad as I gathered from the little reactions I heard.

The box ticking stuff was eyeroll inducing. And Hiroshima? That's their go-to travesty of WWII? I can think of 6 million other travesties I would put above. Not one that followed a warning and request for surrender, and also probably saved more lives than lost.

But I get it... we Americans are just colonizers and every thing we do must be inherently evil because... you know... white straight male. How about our Chinese director and China loving Mouse instead have him sit in the middle of current day China where there is active genocide being committed?

I also agree that the power gap is going to get hard to understand. How many Celestials are there? who was the first? Is there a hierarchy? Are they different from Ego? Can we just plant a bomb on their head and blow them up?

I'm a huge fantasy nerd, and even I am going to start getting tired of all the cosmic stuff, eventually.

Lastly... i'm pretty sure a Celestial even getting out of the Earth that much would have basically destroyed this planet. Any geologists on this board who could give some insight?

There is a rough hierarchy in Marvel. I'm just not versed enough to know if it's being adhered to in the MCU. As it stands, the celestials are the most powerful entities we've seen thus far* but there are a few higher than them.

* What's confusing is once you factor the creature mentioned behind the multiverse which seems to be some all consuming thing or someone like Kang the Conquerer who owns time. Do they trump this god celestial in Eternals? Don't know.

C@LAg would know.

That movie sucked, which meant it committed the ultimate sin: it was a terrible evangelist for the new civic religion.

That would have torn earth apart. Complete destruction, no question.

That's way down on my list of issues with the movie.

Yeah, it was one of those things where I thought about it and smiled at the ridiculousness and then went "eh whatever."

The Eternals are "machines" in the MCU. The Celestials are not.

In the comics, the Eternals are not machines and are genetically engineered humans the Celestials created.

I doubt the celestials could have been snapped. They are basically Gods. Not a "God" like Thor that isn't really a god, but actual Gods and beyond life.
