Many on here were good ones. Dwight Yoakum does good with Elvis songs.

My addition:
Live and let die - Guns n roses
Desperado - Clint Black

I could almost entertain that opinion if GnR had been the band to decide "let's remake Live And Let Die and rock it up pretty hard and bring it back and have a hit".

Alas, they stole the idea. Before they remade that song, there was a band that toured the club circuit and had remade that song, really even better than the GnR version. Two bands, really, but the same singer driving them.

Shock Tu was the first band followed by breakup of that band and some of them getting back together as Joey C. Jones & Bashin' Passion

They had originals and they had covers. Their cover of Live And Let Die always left the crowd going "Holy **** that was great!" They did an excellent cover of The Immigrant Song as well but didn't remake it, just played it like the album. And Joey could nail the vocals.

As their popularity was noticed on the club circuit, so was their cover of the McCartney song. The rumor is that some from GnR or that was close to GnR checked them out at a performance in L.A. and decided to rush a version of Live And Let Die onto the next record.

You remember hearing that another band (maybe Rainbow) had gotten wind of VH's cover of You Really Got Me and tried to rush their own version of it onto vinyl? Same thing here, but GnR actually succeeded.

Great song. Great remake. Not their idea. And the club band actually did it better.

Aaaaannnndddd now I just turned into freaking Redstone.

Exactly. Metallica turned it into a directive to a porn star to get on with her life.

Always loved Green Day's version of A Quick One While He's Away. Saw them play it live as the Foxboro Hot Tubs in Dallas, and it was awesome.

Interestingly enough, this kind of situation is where the term "cover" comes from, or at least that's what was presented on the Cocaine and Rhinestones podcast:
Quote:

When George Jones started hitting the Top 10, he learned all about the then-standard industry practice of major labels having their artists cover the latest records from newcomers like him. From the perspective of a major label, the strategy is a no-brainer: take a song starting to do well for some relatively unknown act in an isolated market and put your comparatively massive resources behind it. We're talking a bigger budget for everything from recording to promotion, much wider distribution and a major artist who already has a huge audience. This used to be nearly un-****-up-able. However, from the perspective of an indie label, a major label cover could kill your record. (In fact, that's why it's called "covering" a song. The idea is for the major label to blanket the national market with a new record, covering the regional hit from sight.) This is what concerned Pappy Daily when Webb Pierce covered "Why Baby Why" as an actual duet with Red Sovine.

There were actually other high-quality covers on the club circuit before Shock Tu. But you are otherwise correct. And yes they were a great band.

Now, I am also a big Oasis fan. I have ALL the singles UK imports. Plenty of amazing covers there. (I obviously can't list Heroes, but that one is amazing. Street Fighting Man also.)

The winner!

My favorite cover is Brandi Carlile's Madman Across the Water. It's hard to say it's better than the original as the originator is Sir Elton John, but it's incredible none the less.
