Create your top 10 movie list and identify the method you used. Remember that this is your list not the greatest movies of all time. I'm curious to see what movies you like and what methods you use to create your list (I.e. your method could be the 10 movies you can bring to a deserted island for the rest of your life). I'll start.

Method: I selected one movie only for each of my favorite directors, then filled in the remainder:

Top 10:
Spielberg - Raiders of Lost Ark
Tarantino - Inglorious B
Nolan - Interstellar
Shyamalan - Unbreakable
Michael Mann - Heat
Peter Weir - Dead Poets Society
Cameron-T2
Tombstone
Casablanca
Star Wars A New Hope

Honorable Mention:
The Great Escape
The Matrix
A fistful of dollars
The Sting
Les Miserables

Edit: Loved reading everyones lists. I'm adding movies I forgot below.

For Love of the Game
Hell or High Water
3:10 to Yuma (2007)
True Grit (2010)
Sean of the Dead

You say it's a top 10 list, then you add your honorable mentions? That's weak, bro. Make a 10 and stick to it.

1. Star Wars
2. ESB
3. ROTJ

4. Big Trouble in Little China

5. Field of Dreams
6. Shawshank

7. Wedding Crashers
8. Coming to America
9. Office Space

10. Jurassic Park

1-3: The greatest moments of my childhood, the most enduring movies of my life. A bond I share with numerous family members and friends.

4. The best time I had at the theater outside of Star Wars and a cult classic whose fans are always happy to meet each other.

5-6. Movies that give me hope that life is magical and people are inherently good.

7-9. My favorite comedies, The ones I put on when I need a laugh even though I can quote the whole thing.

10. Got to see it at a midnight showing right before it opened and couldn't believe what I was seeing. Real dinosaurs. The T-Rex at night breaking free was downright terrifying in how real it was. Instantly rewatchable at any time of day.

I made this list based on those I grew up watching on repeat or will stop and watch if I find it on TV or have nothing else to do. i guess this could translate to pretty much what i would take on a deserted island.

in no particular order:

1. Shawshank Redemption
2. the Fast and the Furious (the original)
3. Toy Story 1
4. National Treasure
5. 40 Year Old Virgin
6. Bourne Identity
7. Gran Torino
8. Step Brothers
9. Ocean's 11
10. Empire Strikes Back

Guilty as charged. I agonized so much over chopping off the last five I felt I had to include them somehow.

I enjoyed reading your descriptions; particularly Jurassic Park. I watched that movie as a kid on a tiny movie screen in a suburban with my friends on the way to a party. There's no rational explanation for how terrified I was watching that movie (kitchen scene) given how grainy the picture was and yet…

it's funny, midnight showings weren't a thing back then. I was 19 and home from A&M and my brother was 22 and had just moved back from college out of state. He won the tickets to a midnight showing off the radio and in the span of a few hours we were at the theater. As dumb as it sounds now, we left the theater at 230 or 3 am and I remember being so blown away I felt like the T-Rex was going to be lurking behind the move theater. Special effects wise I can't think of anything that has given me that experience since.

This is a list of movies I'm most likely to stop and watch if they are on and I'm changing the channels. There are far "better" movies, I'm just not willing to sit and watch The Godfather any time. If it's part of a series, there is a good chance I'm watching most of them (not Ocean's 8) but only put my favorite for each.

1. Ocean's 11
2. Rounders
3. Out of Sight
4. The Italian Job
5. The Bank Job
6. Fast and Furious
7. The Score
8. Pitch Perfect
9. Bourne Ultimatum
10. Die Hard

My top 10:

The Empire Strikes Back
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Alien
Star Wars
Avengers Infinity War + Avengers Endgame (counting as 1 really long movie)
Captain America The Winter Soldier
Die Hard
Aliens
Jaws

There is a strong correlation between this list and my childhood+college years.

If I had to go with directors,
Spielberg - Raiders of the Lost Ark
Ridley Scott - Alien
James Cameron - Aliens
Christopher Nolan - Interstellar
Denis Vill??? - Dune

My top 10s because I watch them over and over again. I don't really care to see Casablanca, Gone with the wind, or Citizen cane multiple times.

Happy Gilmore
Out Cold
Eurotrip
Hunt for Red October
Almost Famous
Edge of tomorrow
Joe Dirt
Man on fire
Mary Poppins
Taken
Enzo The Baker

My Top 10 that I just don't get tired of watching but also, for the most part, are beautifully shot.

1) Godfather Part II
2) Godfather
3) Goodfellas
4) Raging Bull
5) Lost in Translation
6) Do the Right Thing
7) A Clockwork Orange
8) Kung Fu Hustle
9) Amelie
10) Parasite

Edit: Subbed Parasite for In Bruges. But am adding because I haven't thought about a movie like that after viewing ever. The life parallels were amazing.

The Hunt for Red October
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
The Dark Knight
The Usual Suspects
Die Hard
The Goonies
Jurassic Park

Office Space
Ratatouille

Went purely on rewatchability. I dont care what kind of mood I am in, I can watch any one of these. Doesnt matter if there are 10 min left, I can turn it on.

Movies I never tire of and have watched many times, so I guess my top 10.

2001
Lawrence of Arabia
Swingers
Clerks
Aliens
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Hunt for Red October
Amadeus
The Blues Brothers
Lord of the Rings - Return of the King

Good Will Hunting
Gladiator
Braveheart
Rocky
Lord of the Rings
A New Hope
Empire Strikes Back
Princess Bride
Monty Python
A River Runs Through It

Or at least, that's what I say right now on the spur of the moment. I haven't seen a lot of the old classics (Godfather, Casablanca, etc) and could easily be forgetting some that would normally be in my top ten, but I don't think any of the top 7 would drop out.

No particular order, off the top of my head:

Interstellar - my favorite Nolan movie

The Dark Knight - best comic book movie, one of the best action movies, and one of the all time best villian/performace ever

Jaws - the GOAT and original summer popcorn flick. Will never be surpassed.

Jurassic Park - second best summer popcorn flicks, and beyond the technical wizardry of it, I saw it with my Dad when I was in high school after we had both read the book. For a high school age teenager to go to the movies with just his dad and enjoy the time so much he still remembers it almost 30 years later - that's a special movie.

Raiders of the Lost Ark - another GOAT. I didn't want to be a football player or musician or movie star when I was a kid....I wanted to be Indiana Jones.

Star Wars A New Hope - c'mon, no reason needed.

Star Wars Empire Strikes Back - ditto

Legends of the Fall - love the storyline, love the score

Last of The Mohicans - an epic storyline, Mann at his peak, and Day-Lewis starring

A Christmas Story - I'll watch this every Christmas until the day I die

So far Jurassic Park and Star Wars leading the pack here. Both having that "woah" scene they saw right in the theater moment.

Was just thinking about that. Problem is, I'm so far behind on my own lists - still so much I need to watch from 2021 - that mine would feel incomplete, hence having not yet posted anything. Maybe I can in a couple weeks, or if someone else wants to get the thread going now, go right ahead, and I'll add to it later. In the past I've done a single, end-of-year thread, and it can be either your top ten movies, top ten TV shows, or just top ten things you've watched, from both movies and TV, in one list.

All good. I was building my list on Letterboxd the other day and thought about it. There's a few movies I'd like to see that haven't made their way near me or onto VOD, but I'm really behind on tv this year for some reason.

Fun topic. My criteria was to start back with my childhood to now and list out movies I found memorable or impactful or just loved for some reason or another. Next I went through my list and asked if a film still holds up as a top 10 for me. I tried to list these in order of when I think I saw the film and not release date:

Return of the Jedi…my first movie theater experience was watching RotJ. I even remember the theater…this small 2 screen theater on a hill next to Richland Mall in Waco.
Ghostbusters
Beetlejuice
Goodfellas
The Godfather
Blazing Saddles
Pulp Fiction (#1)
Swingers…I know younger generations will likely never understand the Gen X Swing revival. It was fun. This movie helped make it fun. I love this movie so much.
The Dark Knight
Mad Max Fury Road
