2001 A Space Odyssey
The Right Stuff
Lawrence of Arabia
No Country for Old Men
There will be Blood
Swingers
Fargo
Shawshank Redemption
Saving Private Ryan

I'm a millennial and absolutely love Swingers. But yeah, I always though the swing revival thing of the 90's was a bit odd.

How has "Dances with wolves" not made the list? If that show is on TV, I stop and watch it! It's a beautiful film.

This is probably considered blasphemy, but I had somehow never seen Dances With Wolves, tried to remedy that a few years ago, and quit after 15 minutes. That movie just screamed "hammy '90s period piece" to me and I couldn't get past it.

My problem with doing a top 10 is that what I put today may be different tomorrow. I'm pretty confident in my top 5 though.

1. Jaws
2. The Hunt for Red October
3. Infinity War
4. Hell of High Water
5. The Empire Strikes Back
6. Office Space
7. Point Break
8. Rocky
9. Terminator
10. Iron Man

Animal House
Christmas Vacation

This sucks.

I was literally working on this a few days ago, but was trying to do a top 20. I put about 40 on the page and then just stared at it for 10 minutes. How the hell am I supposed to do this? Decided the only method I could use was to determine which movies can I watch anytime, no matter when they are on. Also, which movies just comfort me like a warm blanket? I still feel like I am betraying 30 other movies that I would put in my "S" tier.

1. The Shawshank Redemption - Cliche? Sure. Greatest movie ever made? Yep.

2. The Godfather - Again... just put this damn movie on anytime, and my ass is watching the Godfather.

3. The Fellowship of the Ring - I could cop out and just say The Lord of the Rings. I also don't want to take up 1/3 of my list on what should be one movie, so I chose my favorite. Over the years, my favorite has changed and it was Return of the King for a while. However, having seen them all so many times and having read the book twice, I have to say Fellowship is my favorite. Also, I can't say I can watch the other two anytime. However, I absolutely love starting the series with this perfect movie. The prologue has got to be the best exposition dump of any movie in history.

4. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - Absolutely love. I forget I'm even watching Jim Carey in this role. I also see myself so much in his character. One of the most romantic scenes in any movie, to me, starts when he drops her off at the beginning up to when he leaves and she opens her window to ask him to wish her happy valentines day when he calls.

5. When Harry Met Sally - My favorite RomCom ever. I still remember the first time I saw it when I was young at my grandmother's house. I started it around midnight and fell in love with it. I still love starting it late at night when I am falling asleep and find it to be such a comforting movie.

6. Back to the Future - Just the most fun movie ever.

7. Almost Famous - I want to live in the 70's. Great music, great clothes, great cars... yes.

8. The Grand Budapest Hotel - I adore Wes Anderson films, and this is my favorite.

9. Raiders of the Lost Ark - I used to put The Last Crusade as my favorite Indy film. I think it is a better action movie than Raiders, but I just love the use of shadows in Raiders, and the eerie feeling of foreboding it gives you throughout the movie. Also, literally every scene is an iconic piece of cinema history.

10. The Princess Bride - Grew up with this movie and can quote the entire freaking thing.

And one more. Maybe Casino Royale?

It's understandable, but there is a massive recency bias here. Each of these for their own reasons, but they were all standard bearers for a genre or revolutionary when made.

It's a wonderful life
Casablanca
Star Wars
The sting
Raiders
Goodwill Hunting
Airplane
North by northwest
Bridge on the River Kwai
Up

So many elements of it draw me in and move me, but damn, talk about a heavy film. I've watched it probably at least 20 times all the way through and doubt I've ever NOT teared up a bit toward the end. Powerful, powerful performances and filmmaking.

Goodwill Hunting

Hunt for red October
National Treasure
Elf

I had Fellowship as my #10 until I remembered Jurassic Park. It's the purest of the three for me - so patient and lovingly crafting the early parts in the Shire. I've been watching the movies with one of my kids (we sat through the Hobbit movies first to give her a feel for the world). There's something spectacular about a 9-year-old saying, "Can you stop calling it the big fire monster and just call it the Balrog?"

If I'm stranded on an island (that somehow has power and an amazing TV setup LOL) I would take with me the movies I have the most fun watching, not necessarily good movies:

  • Dumb & Dumber
  • A Few Good Men
  • Wedding Crashers
  • Goodfellas
  • The Dark Knight
  • Jaws
  • Caddyshack
  • John Wick
  • My Cousin Vinny
  • The Big Lebowski

1. Kung Fu Hustle. A legacy pick. When I was 17, it was like God crafted this movie specifically for me. Saw it about 20 times that year - even imported a copy early.
2. Captain America - Civil War. Thoroughly satisfying, great action, lived up to all the hype.
3. Memento. Blew my mind at the time.
4. Return of the Jedi. Ewoks suck but everything on Tatooine and the Death Star is perfect.
5. Hard Boiled. Maybe the greatest shoot 'em up of all time.
6. Casablanca. A GD American treasure.
7. Face/Off. Same as above. What a weird time we lived in that this movie would be made, much less thrive. It's so great in so many bizarre ways.
8. LA Confidential. Great film noir.
9. The Usual Suspects. Just a gripping and entertaining crime drama all the way through.
10. Oldboy. Had never seen anything like it. There are imitators but nothing will hit or shock quite as hard as your first Oldboy.

I love this thread. Very cool to see everyone's answers and some of the reasonings or thought processes. Also great way to see people's tastes more so than just a singular top movie or top 2 or even 5. With 10 you have a little room for personal favorites that may not be "great" movies to many. Here are my unordered top 10, took some deliberation:

Godfather Part II
El Dorado (old western, John Wayne, James Caan)
Dazed and Confused
The Dark Knight
Big Trouble in Little China
Dumb and Dumber
Star Wars
The Big Lebowski
Good Will Hunting
Shawshank Redemption

I will not name my honorable mentions, but they are all mentioned in the thread in one or more spots in others' top 10s, so nothing too abnormal.

Two notes though. First, saw Edge of Tomorrow mentioned a couple times. I agree with y'all, it is such an excellent movie. Did not think about it initially for my list, for some reason that movie just didn't take off marketing wise I guess but whenever I remember about it I think of how awesome it was.

Secondly, lots of Dances With Wolves and Legends of the Fall. I've seen the former but not the latter, may need to fix that.

Children of Men
Smokey and The Bandit
The Lady Eve
Roman Holiday
The Hunt For Red October
The Royal Tenenbaums
The Man From Nowhere (The Korean one)
