A little confusion in our first week of the game, as Rhutton125 picked a player, "Michelle", who does not exist. So Rhutton you need to pick another woman for the game, but you won't get any points they might have accrued this week.

Otherwise, here's the breakdown.

Bulldog73 (4 points)
Romeo - tribe won immunity, +1
Mike - found Idol, +2, tribe won immunity +1
Maryanne
Marya - VOTED OUT

Swati - tribe won immunity, +1

One thing I'm not enjoying so far is all of the Survivor: Upward Bound stories. It seems like there doing more and more of these kind of stories and less gameplay and strategy.

Really? I thought they showed Daniel's strategy with the firefighter MIke's idol in quite a bit of detail. He has a great idea on how to manipulate that idol, assuming Mike can remember where it is.

I'm always fascinated by how quickly people deviate from their pre-game strategy. I know next to nothing about psychology, but you'd have to think a lot of it is being isolated from the people you would typically talk to and confide in. Even if you know that you shouldn't blab about what you've found, our human nature wants to get that affirmation from someone or the reinforcement that we're doing the right thing.

What do you mean upward bound stories... disadvantaged people?

CBS announced they would have AT LEAST 50% "minority" in every one of their reality shows. In reality, that means 60% plus black, a few latinos, one or two asians, at least two gays, one (or two if one is Jewish) token white male, and at least one attractive white female.

Disadvantaged regardless of race. It seems like they're playing up everyone's "woe is me" story this year more than other seasons.

They're stories. They aren't all "woe is me." It makes things interesting and barely takes up time after the first few episodes.

They have always had stories in the episodes of Survivor, especially at the beginning. I don't know how you can have strategy coming in with people you don't know. Players like that usually go home early for playing too fast. I also think there was plenty of strategy starting to form.

Ika, you have everyone pretty much having two separate alliances and everyone is trying to balance them to keep themselves safe. So far, Swati seems to be in the best spot at the moment. Dre In Tati, it seems like Mike and Jenny are on the outs with Daniel knowing about Mike's beware advantage and making moves to take advantage of it, if Mike remembers where he put it haha.

Usually most of the strategy you are going to see in a season happens after the merge

That was a good episode. The challenge was interesting with Jonathan's domination and the big swells.

Then neurotic white guy failed miserably at tribal when it took a left turn.

Yeah there was a lot of bungling there. Channelle risking her vote when she knew she couldn't afford to. Daniel blaming his biggest ally during that tiebreaker. Props to Hai for reading things correctly and putting his foot down.

I would have liked to see the final 2 have a fire contest and have some control over getting eliminated or not.

I was surprised to not see the final two try hard to plead their cases; they just kinda sat there making a few weak comments instead of fighting for their lives.

Daniel completely torpedoed himself in that tribal. First, to succeed on a rock drawing tribal, the other side has to believe you are willing to go to rocks. He immediately made it clear that he would be willing to flip because the first thing he said is "I do not want this to go to rocks". Second, he immediately tried to throw Chanelle under the bus. That move may have been useful, but to do it right off the bat seems ill advised. Honestly, I don't know if there was any way to get Hai to go along with them if he was smart (and he seems to be). His choices were become low man on the totem pole in a 4 person alliance, or buckle down and risk going to rocks to keep the one person who is clearly loyal to him and gives him a chance at taking power within the tribe.

That was a really fun episode. I made my whole family watch Jonathan in the immunity challenge after watching it alone the first time. That might be the most impressive thing I've ever seen on the show, and a real throwback to the days where the challenges were really grueling.

This observation is probably a "DUH" moment for some of you, but it's incredible how every counselor and lawyer thinks they're going to come on the show and be able to read and coerce everyone so effortlessly, with Daniel the latest to assume so. They never seem to grasp that they are good at doing that in an extremely controlled environment - their office or a courtroom - but the other players are not going to let them run the show. At least in the edit, Hai really established himself as a loyal, strong player and Daniel as a colossal moron.

Also thought Maryanne was an idiot for flashing her extra vote back at camp in the opener. Now she's the easy target for them.

BlackgoldAg takes the lead on Week 2 of the pickem, which was pretty boring despite the episode drama.

It's in the rules that the vote has to be unanimous. It's wrong to have people that can't vote casting a vote that could have someone going home or all of them drawing rocks. It's a flaw in the game they hadn't thought about because they've added so many twists. But that seems like an easy one they should have been able to catch.
emoney

I don't really think it's a flaw. The people who risked their vote did it trying to get something good in return. It didn't work out for them (or in Mike's case hasn't worked out yet) so they have to find a way to work around it. They know the rules so it's on Mike and Chanelle to make sure it doesn't come to that vote where they would need to reveal the fact they didn't have a vote.

Just a game note, one of my kids is in the hospital this week and I've got the night shift. Hoping to watch the show on my phone to relax after she falls asleep tonight, but might be a day or two until I update the scores, just depends on what's going on.

Dull episode from the pickem standpoint. We should definitely rewrite the rules next year where the first place immunity people get 2 points and the second place gets 1 to break it up.

Overall I really liked the episode. Jonathan again was a marvel to watch, but for the first time I have to give props to Tori for doing something - calling him out as "Goliath" in the post-immunity scene. Makes everyone on the other 2 tribes hyper aware of how powerful he is so he's gotta be a huge (pun intended) target as soon as the merge happens. Plus with the tribes down to 4-5 people, it should plant the seed in his tribemates' heads that if they go to another tribal, they should blindside him because it's almost time for the merge anyway.

Rocksroy continues to fascinate me as someone who seems utterly aware there is a social component to the game.

I said it almost seemed like Jeff (or the edit) was trying to paint a target on him with the repeated and specific call outs. He has truly been a dominant force, but if Jeff wasn't pointing it out, would they have been able to know so well? At least he was self-aware enough to realize how dumb his speech was.

Also, it's been fascinating how this season they have used shot in the dark and they have been correct in that it needed to be used.

I think she voted for him in case the rest voted Daniel and Daniel used his shot in the dark and won. It would have nullified the votes against him and then if there were no votes for anyone else I guess they would have revoted and she would be out. Pretty smart on her part.

Thanks for the explanation. I can't imagine Daniel is getting a ton of organic lawyering business after his showing on TV. His interview with Dalton Ross on EW.com is really cringey - I guess Dalton could have cleaned it up, but Daniel talks all over him and even "Corrects" him on what sort of question he should ask.
