... I''ve watched in years. Am I the only person who thinks this way? Probably so.

They finally put this out on Paramount + so I started watching it yesterday, Got as far as start of the sailboat scene and just turned it off.

Perhaps it was all the silliness and inaccuracies of the flying scenes that drove me nutty. No, there is no manned vehicle that flies anywhere close to Mach10. There is no way to eject and live traveling at any speed like that. No, test pilots are automatically grounded flying outside the prescribed training curriculum. COs portraits at HQ are not glamour shots. Use the right damn tools to work on your P-51, dammit!

Perhaps this is just a movie that is about what I've done for a living for the last several decades and can't bring myself to suspend reality long enough to enjoy a work of fiction. But I really was surprised to see so many calling this the movie of the year.

Does he finally end up playing volleyball with the son of his booty buddy at the end?

You're clearly in the minority. There are plenty of aerophiles, military service members, cinephiles, and aviation industry insiders who are well aware of the inaccuracies and loved this movie. But that's ok.

But where you're in a class of your own is that you didn't even finish the movie, and started a thread about how it's the worst movie even though it's clearly loved by this board. A+ troll. Congrats.

Loved it.

It's a movie. Sorry you thought you were watching a documentary.

The first one is just as inaccurate. Do you hate that one as well? If so, I'm not sure what you were expecting.

It is a very gratifying if clichéd popcorn flick. Take it for what it is and just simply enjoy.

I didn't think it was bad, but I did find it overrated. It seemed like a pretty standard action movie to me. Not a waste of money by any means, but not the greatest action movie ever. I think a lot of the reaction for the movie is because we have been so starved for movie theater movies the last couple of years. When we actually got one, people went crazy... Also, in today's world, every reaction has to be over the top (see OP).

My vote is for Crossroads.

I actually didn't bother watching the movie at all but someone told me about it. Never even see a trailer.

They expect me to believe that the Karate frickin kid can outplay Steve Vai on the guitar? With a man's soul on the line?

Haha. Macchio outplays Vai. F'ing idiot movie makers.

Documentaries are photographs.

Movies are paintings.

Where character/theme often trump plot/accuracy/reality.

You want reality, watch a documentary.

My two cents:

I don't like the original Top Gun at all
I see a lot of action movies and have been to the theater a fair amount since the pandy
I can't help but be a contrarian sometimes
I was late to Maverick and had heard all the hype

Still thought it was great.

It's a really enjoyable movie. I don't think it takes any risks whatsoever. But it's still a hellova ride.

Everyone can have their opinion. I won't trash yours since I regularly defend certain movies that TexAgs posters consider among the worst ever (without, as far as I can tell, actually having ever watched truly awful movies).

I get what you're saying about the reality of how they portray these airplanes, in this movie or pretty much any other featuring aircraft that are not glorified people movers. While I've never actually flow an airplane or worked on a real one, and never served in the armed forces, I do have a life-long love of aviation, WWII aviation in particular. As such, I recognized many of the same criticisms you have for TP:M, but I was able to put all of that aside and just enjoy the movie.

My brother, who is a test pilot and very much in this space, had no issues enjoying the entirety of the movie.

Yep. Former instructors and leaders at the actual Top Gun disagree with him. Just his weird marching band-loving ass trying to troll, which is ironic that someone that into marching bands used "booty buddy" as an insult. I know it's a troll.

Of course nothing flies Mach 10. No ***** Of course the wild card pilot is going to be grounded for disobeying direct orders. Just like there wasn't really a Benjamin Martin who did all the thing in the Patriot. It was based loosely on like five different people. Pandora isn't a real planet. It's a movie.

Oh, and since it's his own P-51, Tom Cruise can use whatever tools he wants to work on it.

I did have a problem with the use of a Mustang in the film. Shouldn't a Naval aviator own a F4U Corsair for his personal iconic WWII fighter. Well probably a F6FHellcat but that plane, although the workhorse of the Pacific War, is hardly an iconic warbird.

1. Was it a good popcorn flick? Absolutely.
2. Good cinema? Not really, IMO
3. Accurate? No idea, and don't care (see #1)

OP, I imagine you're like those in the medical profession trying to watch medical dramas. If you can't suspend belief/reality, you have no shot to like it. But it's a great turn-off-your-brain escape.

Perhaps Pete Mitchell favors the Cadillac of the Skies over the Whistling Death (which was also a Navy bird but more frequently used by the USMC).

Its a fun movie with the jets. Some of the stuff in between is corny. And the romance items feel like its out of a Cialis commercial.

I will agree that the "sex" scene felt like out of a ED medication commercial or a tv movie. The lightning didn't help there, felt a bit off.

Sounds like the problem was unreasonable expectations rather than the movie itself.

I was dragged into watching it by my mother who said it was "great". I didn't want to watch it.
