Good movie but nothing ground-breaking. Worth a watch on a rainy night.

Went and saw this last night with my brother. It's a solid movie and we both thoroughly enjoyed it, but I think I had set unrealistic and maybe unfair expectations before going in. Want to watch it a second time around once available on streaming networks. I wasn't "blown away" this time around like I expected to be.

I honestly think watching "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" again the other night might have impacted my viewing experience to some extent. The production quality, authenticity, and nostalgia captured in that movie is pretty much second to none and blows this one out of the water in those regards (imo).

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it...great movie, but I went in expecting to be blown away and to feel like a kid again. I'm weird in that sometimes I like certain movies much more upon 2nd viewing and beyond...maybe that will be the case with this one.
This was my take. I enjoyed the movie, it was fun, well acted, no slow parts. But it was a little overhyped. In the movie Phil Knight was super skeptical about betting the farm on Jordan who wasn't a superstar at the time, then Sonny comes to him about giving Jordan a percentage of sales and Knight agrees right away. It just didn't make sense to me and that part felt a little rushed.

I mean... that's just a character arc. By the time push finally comes to shove, Phil has been changed by what Sonny was able to pull off. Sonny did the impossible, Phil recognizes that, and now trusts him implicitly.

It's that 'in for a penny in for a pound " situation.

And Sunny didn't ask for Phil to give it.

Good, solid movie. Not spectacular.

It reminded me of one of my favorites, Moneyball, which I think is a better movie.

Damon is his dependable self.

I was quite impressed with Chris Tucker. The way he delivered his comments to the Jordans at the big meeting struck me as being very honest. I liked his character because of the way he played the role.

The two Jordan parents were very good.

Strangely--and I can't put my finger on why--the least credible actor was Affleck. He portrayed Knight's odd quirks, but without embracing them. He was "acting."

The music was great.

Anyway, it was worth watching and I enjoyed it.

Thought it was pretty good. Loved that they had the Wanna Be Like Mike song at the end. Hasn't heard that in a long time.

I wonder if there's a story about Gatorade sales going up after that campaign as well - it was everywhere and was a meme before there were memes.

Yea it was like Affleck was doing a parody of Knight. Although I still enjoyed his character.

I enjoyed it but the story probably would have made a better documentary if possible.

Affleck was just clunky and I don't like how retro movies about the 80s just pump song after song out to make us feel nostalgic. I did really enjoy the dialogue between Damon and just about everyone else in the movie, especially Davis and the agent.

No doubt. It got me early on in The Americans but they didn't just rely on that. I'm probably being too critical.

Watched last night and it was good.

Skipped the thread but this is probably a rehash. The only "wtf unnecessary" for us was his moms rattling off what he'd do, including DPotY.

Some of the script was too "convenient" knowing how he turned out.

All that said - I'm not a big nba fan, but Jordan highlights always get me. We've all watched the same shots a million times, but in the right context I always think "that!!! Is a GOAT".

Because why not. F Lebron. Dude never played a season much less a career when defense was valued.
Staff - take out the trash.

This was based on a 30 for 30 so find that.

I just finished it, and thought it was pretty average. Both the Jordans were great, and I liked Jason Bateman. Matt Damon was fine, but Affleck was terrible. I felt like they could have done a better job of explaining why Damon loved Jordan before he was basically willing to be the company on him. They had the one scene where he watches the 82 championship game, and then he's immediately ready to go all in. It's not until after they get the meeting with the Jordans that he goes and starts doing research about Jordan. I feel like they could have done a better job explaining what he saw in Jordan before he bet everything.

I also didn't like how Knight seemingly went from not wanting to give Jordan anything to giving him a percentage of sales without any explanation other than, "I went for a run."

Not having Jordan as a character also hurt the movie, but I certainly understand why they did it. Jordan is way too well known, and also any actor would have looked out of place. However, not having Jordan's perspective also made it seem like something was missing from the whole thing.

Anyways, I'm not mad about spending two hours watching it, but also, I'm glad I didn't spend money on it in the theater.

This was basically how I felt about the movie. Damon's character loved Jordan so much because he saw him hit a game winning shot? Jordan wasn't seen as some superstar can't miss prospect coming out of college.

Agreed about the percentage of sales part. I made the same comment on this thread and someone said it was a "character arc." They definitely rushed that part, and could have shown Knight come up with an "A-ha" moment where he realized signing Jordan would be worth the gamble.

I enjoyed this, if you also watch thr Last Dance then it fills in quite a bit of the back story.

Fun bit, but Nike has paid Jordan $1.3B for his share of the Air Jordan's. That's so bonkers.

I thought the assumption was that Vaccarro had already watched all the tape, since he is a basketball junkie.
This was him going back to look at the tape again, doing his due diligence to see if he could find a new angle. Then he noticed the aspect of Jordan knowing the play was going to him.

Sure, but is that one play really enough to bet the farm on one player and offer a percentage of sales, when that had never done before? College players hit game winning shots all the time knowing that the play was going to them. I dont think they did a good enough job explaining what Sonny saw in Jordan that made him think Jordan would become an eventual superstar.

Not as a freshman in 1982. They underlined that pretty hard.

And not when the #1 pick in that year's draft was also on that team.

Haven't watched the movie yet. Do they touch on the 84 Olympics or explain where they fall in the chronology? After those Olympics, Jordan was a big deal. If I recall correctly, after just the Olympic practices, Bobby Knight called him the best basketball player he'd ever seen.

I haven't seen the movie yet either, so to me that's a great question. They covered that in the documentary on Netflix, The Last Dance…

Yes. Marlon Wayans plays coach George Raveling, who was on Bobby Knight's '84 Olympic staff. He only has one scene, but he delivers a key bit of info about Jordan to Vaccaro/Damon that helps him on his "quest."

And just to add I did watch this Saturday night, really enjoyed it. Thought all the performances were great outside Affleck being a bit of a caricature of Knight, being able to watch this knowing the outcome of what an insanely successful business move this was made it a lot of fun.

And others have mentioned, watching those Jordan clips still just brings me right back. For those of us around a certain age EVERYONE watched the NBA. You had Jordan, Pippen, Magic, Bird, Barkley, Ewing, Robinson, Malone, Drexler, it was like a show every night.

Did you think it was a documentary? FWIW, Sonny Vaccaro himself said the movie was about 80% accurate.

Do yall actually have enough knowledge of the way phil knight acts to say that Affleck was playing a caricature of him? I couldn't pick Phil put of a 1 man lineup let alone know if someone was portraying a caricature of him.
