Good movie but nothing ground-breaking. Worth a watch on a rainy night.

In the movie Phil Knight was super skeptical about betting the farm on Jordan who wasn't a superstar at the time, then Sonny comes to him about giving Jordan a percentage of sales and Knight agrees right away. It just didn't make sense to me and that part felt a little rushed.BG Knocc Out said:
Went and saw this last night with my brother. It's a solid movie and we both thoroughly enjoyed it, but I think I had set unrealistic and maybe unfair expectations before going in. Want to watch it a second time around once available on streaming networks. I wasn't "blown away" this time around like I expected to be.
I honestly think watching "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" again the other night might have impacted my viewing experience to some extent. The production quality, authenticity, and nostalgia captured in that movie is pretty much second to none and blows this one out of the water in those regards (imo).
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it...great movie, but I went in expecting to be blown away and to feel like a kid again. I'm weird in that sometimes I like certain movies much more upon 2nd viewing and beyond...maybe that will be the case with this one.
I mean... that's just a character arc. By the time push finally comes to shove, Phil has been changed by what Sonny was able to pull off. Sonny did the impossible, Phil recognizes that, and now trusts him implicitly.

It's that 'in for a penny in for a pound " situation.

Thought it was pretty good. Loved that they had the Wanna Be Like Mike song at the end. Hasn't heard that in a long time.

Good, solid movie. Not spectacular.
It reminded me of one of my favorites, Moneyball, which I think is a better movie.
Damon is his dependable self.
I was quite impressed with Chris Tucker. The way he delivered his comments to the Jordans at the big meeting struck me as being very honest. I liked his character because of the way he played the role.
The two Jordan parents were very good.
Strangely--and I can't put my finger on why--the least credible actor was Affleck. He portrayed Knight's odd quirks, but without embracing them. He was "acting."
The music was great.
Anyway, it was worth watching and I enjoyed it.
The music works on a lot of peopleGhost of Andrew Eaton said:
I enjoyed it but the story probably would have made a better documentary if possible.
Affleck was just clunky and I don't like how retro movies about the 80s just pump song after song put to make us feel nostalgic.

Affleck was just clunky and I don't like how retro movies about the 80s just pump song after song out to make us feel nostalgic. I did really enjoy the dialogue between Damon and just about everyone else in the movie, especially Davis and the agent.
This was basically how I felt about the movie. Damon's character loved Jordan so much because he saw him hit a game winning shot? Jordan wasn't seen as some superstar can't miss prospect coming out of college.AustinAg2K said:
I just finished it, and thought it was pretty average. Both the Jordans were great, and I liked Jason Bateman. Matt Damon was fine, but Affleck was terrible. I felt like they could have done a better job of explaining why Damon loved Jordan before he was basically willing to be the company on him. They had the one scene where he watches the 82 championship game, and then he's immediately ready to go all in. It's not until after they get the meeting with the Jordans that he goes and starts doing research about Jordan. I feel like they could have done a better job explaining what he saw in Jordan before he bet everything.
I also didn't like how Knight seemingly went from not wanting to give Jordan anything to giving him a percentage of sales without any explanation other than, "I went for a run."
Sure, but is that one play really enough to bet the farm on one player and offer a percentage of sales, when that had never done before? College players hit game winning shots all the time knowing that the play was going to them. I dont think they did a good enough job explaining what Sonny saw in Jordan that made him think Jordan would become an eventual superstar.PatAg said:
I thought the assumption was that Vaccarro had already watched all the tape, since he is a basketball junkie.
This was him going back to look at the tape again, doing his due diligence to see if he could find a new angle. Then he noticed the aspect of Jordan knowing the play was going to him.

And not when the #1 pick in that year's draft was also on that team.TCTTS said:ea1060 said:Sure, but is that one play really enough to bet the farm on one player and offer a percentage of sales, when that had never done before? Not as a freshman in 1982. They underlined that pretty hard.
Did you think it was a documentary? FWIW, Sonny Vaccaro himself said the movie was about 80% accurate.Trident 88 said:
