Other than the call being about Lenny, maybe it's Joel's parents? I don't think we've seen them in the flash forward.

They were at her future wedding in Hawaii.
And her mom was around later than that shooting her commercial, apparently with some terminal illness.

I'm nervous about that important phone call she got at the end.
Jack Parr show callback?

Lenny Bruce death (they'd be compressing timelines here but IRL Princess Margeret's visit to the US was in 1965, so they're already compressing timelines)

???

I think if it was Lenny, we'd have been tracking him at least some during the season.
Well, it was interesting that during her little college reunion with her friends, Midge recited Lenny's dialog to her from Season 1 ("if there was anything else I could do to make a living......") so Lenny has definitely come up. Also read on a fan Wiki that Luke Kirby makes some kind of appearance in the finale.

Re: the phone call. I've wondered if it concerns Susie.

When she went to Hedy to plea with her to intervene in getting Midge on the show, Hedy says "this must have been really hard for you". With all the apparent trauma that Susie has suffered from Hedy from their past involvement, I wonder if maybe she went and did something stupid after leaving the GF office?

Another interesting theory-

Quote:

I think the phone call is most likely about Lenny, his hospitalization or a meltdown. Or in jail. If it's not a parent, only Lenny could get her running out of the office.

Which leads to my big prediction. Lenny had a meltdown, can't do a big show. He asks Midge to fill in, and she nails it, which brings her enough recognition to break into the big time, and probably as Parr wanting her to take that spot after all. In the final scenes we'll see her eulogize Lenny, and that will be what actually pushes her into the major leagues that we see her occupy in the flash forwards. It will also be what causes her to spiral, which is what leads to her isolation from her kids (to even more extent) and the meltdown she had on stage that we saw in 1968.

Susie and Midge are going to be strained because the favor Susie asked for will never be needed or used. So Susie is going to resent Midge making her jump through hoops. And Midge is going to resent Susie because she once again had the major role in her own success.
Plausible I guess.

Yeah, I can't remember if it was explicitly stated earlier in the season during one of the flash forwards, but I don't believe Midge gets her break on the Gordon Ford show.

Really going to miss this show.

Maybe I misinterpreted a prior scene, but I thought Midge and Susie went in different directions was because of Joel being put in prison. Wasn't he forced into doing some creative bookkeeping by Susie's associates?

You're correct. Their break-up happened immediately after Joel was arrested, as Midge blamed her for letting it happen.

Yeah, he basically went into business (his clubs, real estate, etc) with the mob to get them to let Midge off the hook.

What an amazing speech by Abe at dinner.

What do we think the story is with Gordon and his wife? My theory is she's a lesbian. At that time it would have been scandalous for an unmarried man to host a TV show. So he married her to get the host job and get influence, she married to keep up expected perceptions. It's a marriage of pure convenience.

There was an entire scene a few episodes ago, between Susie and Gordon's wife, where they straight up discussed their more-than-just-friends relationship in college. Also, other characters have all but confirmed that Gordon's wife is a lesbian, while Gordon himself has essentially said that it's a marriage of convenience. My point is, there's zero question that Gordon's wife is a lesbian - she 100% is - while everything Quad Dog was speculating has *basically* already been confirmed, if not heavily inferred.
TequilaMockingbird

Hedy Ford is definitely lesbian or bisexual.

I thought you were saying the show strongly hinted that Gordon's wife and Susie had a romantic past but then the show made it explicitly clear that wasn't the case, which caused me to think I had missed something.

Don't feel bad Quad Dog my wife asked the same question.

What's the deal with those two?

I asked her if she fell asleep or something.

For the start of each season after the first, I get excited that maybe Midge will show her boobs again but it always ends in disappointment. It'll be the same feeling after the series finale.

Some Midge and Hedy scissoring might be in order. Tastefully and in the proper context, of course.

I think underwhelming is a good way to put the ending for me too.

I was wanting more, but then again, I was always going to be wanting more.

I really enjoyed the finale up through the end of the GF show. The rest of the episode was really underwhelming to me for some reason.
Yeah, the last scene was kind of bittersweet.

Absolutely loved it.

To the point where I may or may not have teared up during Midge's incredible set. I've been waiting five years for that moment and it more than delivered.

As for the final bookend, I thought it was a nice touch. Midge and Susie had each other in the end and that's all either of them ever needed. The show was *their* love story. Their massive wealth and success didn't hurt either, underlining just how far they had come, and how hard they proved everyone wrong.

Man, I'm really gonna miss this show.

Abe's speech was amazing.

Agreed. For all of Abe's quirks, he is cerebral and observant (outside of someone making a pass at him). He observation of Ethel and how it turned everything he knew to be true re: first born Wesmans on its head was something that resonated with him to the point of obsession. Show runners did a great job pulling that out, only to have Abe reflect on who Midge really was and what he may have done to stunt her growth. Truly well done.

I loved the epilogue with them watching Jeopardy. Something about them both in their mansions watching recorded tv together and cracking each other up just feels perfect for them. So glad that relationship got mended.

Her being able to get her big moment in front of an audience that included all her close family and friends was really nice too. I had no idea how she'd pull it off until that microphone came into the shot. Really well executed storytelling there.

The only thing about the finale I didn't like was the Lenny opening scene. It just made me sad. And I understand his RL story and get what they were doing with Midge and Susie there, but it was still just sad. And made almost sadder by the later flashback to the fortune cookie conversation.

All in all, a fitting final episode. We already got all the information about other characters' futures in earlier episodes, so all that was left was Midge's big breakout performance and reconciliation with Susie. They nailed both imo. The credits scenes of all the locations was awesome too. Going to miss this show.

Didn't like the beginning. Got Return if the King vibes on the number of endings. Maybe should have ended after she finished her set? it was good though. Would watch the series over again.

Great finale.

The season as a whole was also really great.

My gripe is the flashback through out the season. I see what they were going for, but in some ways it took the oomph out of Midge's set at the end.

Imagine if we hadn't seen how famous she became and all that her life was along the way. We see her take the microphone and we know she will kill but we don't know how it will all turn out for her.

They could have still ended the show with the Lenny flashback and the Suzie flash-forward and they both would have had the same emotional weight, IMO. And then all the random stories in-between would not have been necessary (although some of them were much more engaging than others).

I just think the writes wanted to wrap things up and but also keep anyone from rebooting the series in 10-15 years and try to change what happened to Midge afterward.

Thought it was a pretty good final season. Very poignant moments. I enjoyed the finale.

The show got stale and repetitive in the middle of its run, but even at its lowest it remained so easily watchable. And that's a very strong compliment as some of my favorite comedy series had times when they were virtually unwatchable.

Very good show, very good episode. Loved the final season... Having finished it, I appreciate that they pieced it all together and also respected the audience enough to let us figure things out on our own. Like Midge's act, it was never dumbed down or spoonfed... Just delivered.

And they killed the four minutes. That long shot where they dropped the lights and audience sound to show just how much of a standout moment this was... It almost felt like there was no setlist that could match the moment, but I realized it doesn't matter. Just let it be another great off the cuff standup routine about her life and you truly believe it could have been.

Really enjoyed the finale but wish the show had another season or 2. I feel like this season really picked up, but was also really short.
