Very good show, very good episode. Loved the final season... Having finished it, I appreciate that they pieced it all together and also respected the audience enough to let us figure things out on our own. Like Midge's act, it was never dumbed down or spoonfed... Just delivered.

And they killed the four minutes. That long shot where they dropped the lights and audience sound to show just how much of a standout moment this was... It almost felt like there was no setlist that could match the moment, but I realized it doesn't matter. Just let it be another great off the cuff standup routine about her life and you truly believe it could have been.

Loved the 4 minutes, and I was so glad they let us hear Midge's jokes instead of making us imagine her routine was truly great enough to launch her into stardom. Was it the funniest ever? Not even close, but it was a master class in impromptu stand-up and (especially) delivery. Pure perfection, and I agree the way they lowered the lights and filmed around Midge to highlight this singular moment of life-changing excellence was simply outstanding. No doubt this show wins another truckload of Emmys.

My 2nd favorite shot of the episode was when Susie (on the 1st floor) is pissed about Gordon's plan to interview Midge as a writer. She spots Mike (the producer) on the 2nd floor and begins screaming, "Mike!" over and over again, and the camera zooms from her view all the way up to the 2nd floor, right into a close-up of the "WTF?" expression on Mike's face. I had to pause the show, laugh, rewind and watch it again.

This scene brought me joy. Straight homage to The Graduate.

Mike was one of my favorite parts of this season. The scene at the Xmas tree farm was just incredible.

I am going to truly miss this show. One of my all time favorites.

It's funny because I thought they nailed the finale, yet at the same time when I rewatch it in years to come, there's a good chance I will choose to skip over both the first and last 4 minute sequences.

Great way to close out a great series. Given the acting, dialogue, choreography, costuming, and overall attention to detail in creating the Maisel universe, this series is definitely top 5 all time for me. As others have said, I also changed my mind on the flash forwards; they were handled very well and were judiciously applied.

My one gripe for the end of the series? I hate the way they ended Joel's character arc. He started as the heel of the show but was eventually redeemed in Midge's eyes (and therefore in ours). He deserved better than he got and I was disappointed that the writers couldn't think of anything better for him. We don't see Moishe and Shirley in the flash forwards but I'll always hope that they passed before Joel went to prison; it would have killed them otherwise.

You have a good point about Joel. Seeing the picture of him next to Midge's bed in that final sequence leads me to imagine they perhaps got back together when he got out of prison, and he was dead by 2005. That's the story I will tell myself unless the writers give us something else.

That was what I thought the writers were implying.

I had to rewatch it too, but to follow the camera movement. Follow the path of the camera in this one uncut shot: the camera goes up, through railing bars, up over the bars, across an open space, back over railing bars, then follows them down a hallway and down other stairs to the back of the stage. This clip cuts off the back half of the amazing shot.

I don't think that was a single shot. It would be nearly impossible to rig the camera to pan up to the second floor, pass through the railing, then pass back over the top of the railing again. My guess is it was filmed from multiple angles, modeled in 3D, and then the camera was panned virtually.

True they could have cheated to insert cuts anytime the pillar or floor goes between the camera and the action.
Or they could have done something impressive like this. I'd like to see something behind the scenes on it.

It was a single shot. Pretty cool behind the scenes video:

That's awesome. So it looks like the railing was added back in in post production.

Really enjoyed the finale. Abe at the dinner recognizing how strong Midge had been all along was touching. Giving Midge her 'big moment' with her family watching (and finally enthusiastically supporting her) together was perfect...and the uncertainty in the build-up to the moment kept you on the edge of your seat. Very well done.

The flashbacks throughout the season seemed a bit much, lots of back and forth with things that didn't do a lot for the storyline...but I suppose the purpose was to show that Midge's future was a mixed bag and they tease the fallout with Susie so you're left wondering how they reconcile.

Going to miss this show and the banter between Midge/Susie and Midge/Abe.

My wife was a huge Gilmore Girls fan (also written/directed by Amy Sherman-Palladino). Of course both shows feature strong independent female lead types, but my wife noted how the endings of Maisel and the Gilmore Girls reboot were practically identical.

Apparently in the final scene in GG the daughter reveals she is pregnant, but the writing makes no indication of who might be the baby daddy. The ending shot is just her and her mom talking. Same with Maisel…the relationship storyline was not explicitly resolved, but the end shot is her just talking to her friend. I guess the takeaway from both shows is that the female relationships superseded marriages or romantic relationships, but I agree they developed the Joel character too much throughout the course of the show to not resolve his story line.

Finally finished the last season. So so good!! The anticipation of what Midge was gonna do when she sat back on that stool was excellent television. Abe finally showing pride in his daughter's success was also great.

Found this article that sums up the background of the show nicely.

Interesting read, thanks!

Did Midge and Sophie end the show as enemies or was that ever really addressed this final season?

Watched the finale again today. I'm going to miss this show.

As an aside, I'm watching Lenny, the 1974 movie about Lenny Bruce starring Dustin Hoffman in the lead ro.le Interesting stuff.

Finally finished it. Absolutely in my top 5. The writing, acting, pace, everything was just top top notch. And man the 4 minute set and build up was fantastic but that Abe dinner scene was one of the best of the series.

I watched through a bit of season 3 and took a break until the last couple seasons came out. I've since caught up and watched through the end.

Overall, I really enjoyed the show and love this type of fast, witty humor.

With an incredible cast, I think Abe stole the show more times than I can count throughout the series. Him reading the obituary for Joel's dad was a dagger. The self reflection about not realizing his daughter was a genius and he didn't actually support her was another.

My one complaint with this ending is that it really feels like what finally made midge famous was a bit of a let down.

I get that the Gordon Ford show made it to the #1 late night show (implying a lot of people were watching when Midge went on air) but the whole thing just doesn't stand up to season 2 episode 9 (telethon stand up). Even at 1155 pm (when midge goes on in the telethon episode), it's shown that so many people are watching it and love midge. So, the whole "I've got 4 minutes of standup" on the Gordon Ford show just seems like a recycled story line.

I don't know, I guess that little piece of it didn't make sense to me (was expecting something a bit "more" to make her as famous as is implied in all the flash forward scenes).

What more is there to say other than "you can't have it all" Mrs maisel gif. I can't get it to post, I'm dumb.
