Just some really, really odd creative choices being made by Gunn, unless he actually is only trying to win over a niche comic book fanbase. It seems like he's making decisions based on what he wants to watch versus what the general public wants to watch.

Kyle Chandler has been in some amazing stuff, but he was born to play Hal Jordan.
IDK what it is, but I am so hyped for this show. I do have a car I refer to as the Green Lantern, so maybe that's ti.

Pumped for Lanterns. Like Chandler and I like that Pierre guy. Only saw him in the Don Johnson movie.

Really hard to gauge her power level, and if that waxes/wanes when she's not on a yellow-sun world, but looks decent enough. Oddly enough, my SW super fan kid, who knew absolutely nothing about this movie before seeing the preview, was just blown away by it, and requested we go see it when it comes out, so chalk at least one ticket up to girl power, I suppose.

I have to completely disagree with that take that DC & WB are releasing the early critic's reviews because they're really confident in this movie. That's either a very naive take or some serious cope by that fansite.

I believe that those early reviews are from screenings for influencers that are specifically hand picked and invited by the studio (I could be wrong, of course, but i'm pretty sure about that). And we know by now that those early screening reviews by those influencers are going to be sugarcoated with praise, even if they didn't really like the movie (they won't keep getting invited back by the studio if they don't hype the product will they?).

DC desperately needs that fake hype right now because this movie has for a fact been trending downward in the box office projections for weeks. That plus the low desire to see this movie that's popping up in audience surveys has them really nervous.

THAT'S why they have no choice but to herd in a bunch of influencers who will say what you need them to say, and then release those fake reviews a week early. They're desperate to drum up excitement for this movie. They're not confident in this movie, they're scared it'll be another Marvels.

I'm sorry, but you're just straight up guessing / pulling that out of your ass. Because there's nothing to "disagree" with, seeing as it's a fact that…

A) They're not just influencer screenings. We're only a week away from the release, meaning a ton of people/critics have already screened the movie by now as well.

B) The earliest buzz - all the way back to the script stage - has been positive. The script consistently received rave reviews, while test screenings received decent/favorable to great reviews. Even the specific comic it's based on has consistently been held in high regard.

In other words, there are zero facts to back up your speculation. Not to mention, as I've stated in the past, one of my best friends is in charge of marketing for Warner Bros, I saw this person just this past weekend, and they've always been super high/confident in what they have on their hands with this one.

Basically, every conceivable pre-release metric tells us this is apparently a pretty good movie. Having the social media embargo be the Monday of release week was pretty standard procedure. That was never "hiding reactions" territory. Now? They're seeing how positive the buzz has been in general, so they're simply moving up the date. It's not a conspiracy.

I guess we'll see once the movie actually comes out and we can see everyone's thoughts, not just critics. And maybe i'm misunderstanding you, but we have absolutely seen really bad movies maintain the social media embargo until just before the movie opens.

However, the box office projections have been trending down for this movie. Even in the box office thread on this board, the general consensus is that this opening will more than likely qualify as disappointing. This is the 2nd DC movie under Gunn and Safron, their very next movie after Superman, and their big 2026 summer blockbuster to maintain interest in the DCU. An opening in the range of $45-55 million is not satisfactory for those stakes. Its just not. (Superman should have brought in better numbers for being a Superman movie)

I'm simply betting DC/WB is seeing and thinking the same thing I am. If not, they should be.

I actually like the comic its based on and hope the movie is good and does well by it (you can check my posting history on the movie). I'm just being realistic here outside the entertainment social media bubble.

Box office projections often have nothing to do with whether a movie is good or not. Especially a movie like this. It could score in the 80s or 90s on RT and still have an underwhelming opening weekend.

Very true, I liked Masters of the Universe and it technically bombed. So, I may not have been clear in my OP. Regardless of how good the movie actually is, in my opinion DC is worried about the box office for this. So, they're really wanting to get out some good press to drum up more interest in the movie. With it being released in just the second weekend of Toy Story 5's release and the apparent buzz (pun intended) around Toy Story 5, it would look bad if Supergirl came in second with only forty five million in its opening weekend.

So, confidence in how good the movie is =/= confidence in how the movie will be received at the Box Office. That was my original point, and in hindsight I might actually be making a different point than the original X post.

That said, I did came across two or three "meh" reactions. No outright bad reactions, though. Basically people saying the villain is bland and the script is a little unwieldy.

The villain is my concern. In what little we've seen of him so far he comes across like generic punk looking space bad guy. These studios seem to forget that these types of movies live or die as much by the villains as by the hero.

Nothing against you TC, but these reviews easily could have been generated by Lex Luthor's secret monkey army in the pocket universe. They all seem written with the hopes of getting a phrase or a sentence into a future commercial for the movie.

I'm hopeful that Supergirl is fun. I rewatched Superman all the way through last weekend for the first time since my theater experience and find it frustrating in its inability to give Superman hard choices and turmoil to overcome by truly being the most powerful being on Earth.

The only "i am truly the most powerful person ever" moment he has is catching the building from crushing a single car.

All of his other crises are resolved by him getting saved by Lois, Mr. Terrific, NoHo Hank, and Krypto. Even the part where the kids in Made-Up Nation raise the flag and start cheering his name wind up with GL and Hawkgirl as the true heroes.

Nobody is going to understand WTF Superman did to "save the planet" back in Metropolis when they see it on the news. I had way more fun with the JL and the great staff of the Daily Planet, especially SKyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen than I did with Supes or Lex.

I don't post these because they're always highly accurate. And we all know they're aiming for TV spot pull quotes. But they usually do at least tell us whether a movie is good or bad, broadly speaking. You can always tell, you can always read the tea leaves, etc. And it seems as though this one is, at least, entertaining. Flawed but fun.

Hell, I didn't even like Gunn's Superman all that much, I'll probably never watch it again, and I've lost a ton of interest in the DCU as a whole. But I'm always hoping for a good time at the theater, and it sounds like this one is that. Otherwise, I have zero investment here.

Super Girl looks terrible. Of course the reviews are positive, writing anything negative would risk accusations of misogyny.

I've honestly never doubted Alcock would be good as Supergirl. I just want Gunn to either get past his GTOG fetish or step back further from the process so the movies don't come across as "Written by Anna Nogueira (and also heavily influenced by James Gunn)".

I mean, for ****'s sake, Supergirl is wearing a trenchcoat and headphones, has a woe-is-me-I-don't-care-about-anybody-else attitude, and she's dealing with losing her parents as a child.... HE JUST MADE THE FEMALE VERSION OF STAR LORD FROM HIS GUARDIANS MOVIES!

Except critics panned The Marvels, Wonder Woman 1984, The Rise of Skywalker, Charlie's Angels (2019), Alita: Battle Angel, Atlas, The Acolyte, etc, etc - all big-budget, female led projects in the post #MeToo era.

Maybe, just maybe, people actually like this movie, backed by the reasons I named earlier... the script has been consistently well-received, test screening were positive, and now trusted critics seem to be mostly enjoying it as well.

Some of you live in such a weird world, with all kinds of convenient amnesia.

I do agree that the whole Gunn tone/vibe/aesthetic is so damn stale and one-note at this point. Granted, the next two DCU projects look super dark - Lanterns and Clayface - but to start out with THIS much Gunn influence over the first two projects hasn't been great.
