Based on all the early buzz (apparently the script is incredible, according to multiple sources), and now the trailer, I actually think Supergirl will be better than Superman. It seems to be a lot of fun, and I'm legit looking forward to it.
That said, IMO, the James-Gunn-ification of the DCU is already starting to get a little tired. Between Creature Commandos, Superman, the second season of Peacemaker, and now Supergirl (which, mentioned above, basically looks to feature a female Starlord, down to the trench coat, headphones, and the '70s/'80s soundtrack). In a vacuum, each project has been fun, had its own charm, etc. And again, I think Supergirl will continue that trend. But as a whole? It's time to start mixing it up in terms of tone.
Thankfully they've got Clayface next September, and then Lanterns premiering the month prior, for which we just got our first look (only ten seconds, though, below, from a broader HBO trailer), both of which finally look to be going different, more serious routes...
