Since Thriller? Seriously?

Lover, Reputation, and 1989 were each hyped far more than this album.

The general sentiment I've continually seen these past couple of weeks is literally how little this album is being promoted comparatively, even by Swift herself. It's bizarre. For one, she didn't even release a single from it ahead of time, something she's otherwise done for nearly every album. She's hardly done any kind of count down either, she hasn't made a single appearance yet, etc. Not to mention, the marketing materials she released at whatever library earlier this week were getting dunked on for featuring typos and just looking cheap in general.

Again, I like her! I want this album to be good!

But so far the build up has been an objective step down from her behemoth efforts of the past.

She did 0 press or promo for Reputation. She was not in anywhere near the same realm in terms of her public perception because the record had not yet been corrected in the situation with Kanye. Rep was not hyped or particularly well received at the time, only in hindsight have people realized how good of an album it is.

I was somehow able to listen to some of the album before my wife.

I have XM radio on my truck, and Channel 13 was adjusted to Taylor Swift only songs. I had a 30 minute commute so turned it on as they are playing the album in order non stop. I heard about 4-5 songs, and they all were about how she thought she would marry a guy and then had all that taken away. There wasn't a deviation. Just another way to say the same thing.

Having all those songs together just felt kind of depressing... and awkward considering she's supposedly in a good relationship right now.

She somehow managed to have a boyfriend for 6 years and broke up last year.

You can best believe she was sitting on some material regarding that split

I think there are hits on the album. I think it's better than midnights. I don't think that much of it is actually about Joe Alwyn, the most savage songs are about Matty Healy imo.

Faves so far:
So Long, London
Florida!
I Can Do It With A Broken Heart

I enjoyed it much more this morning on headphones than on a speaker but I was also getting pretty sleepy when listening last night.

To me Midnights is her worst album, which is not to say it's horrible, but it had ZERO business winning Album Of The Year. It has some good pop moments but it's very forgettable and bland. Then again, it had the task of following her masterpiece of folklore/evermore. The problem with having such a high point album as folklore/evermore is that now I know what she's capable of, so I am less likely to accept when she isn't living up to that.

This is a step in the right direction overall, despite the BS release approach of the surprise double album, but this just re-enforces what was already very very clear to me.

Dessner >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Antonoff

For this reason the second album is the better of the two.

I saw an interview somewhere recently where she said [paraphrasing] that the reason she loves Antonoff is because he is always so enthusiastic. No matter how weird or different of an idea she comes in with he freaks out like "Oh my God! Oh my God! I know exactly what it needs!!!" And I think that is precisely the problem. He has no filter and doesn't hold her to any standard. He takes any idea and just dumps tons of production sugar on it and his songs all sound too similar.

Dessner is much more of an artist and I think her game rises to meet him and produces much better songs.

To me I look at the songs. If you take the bulk of Antonoff's songs on Midnights and here and just had her play the song on a piano or acoustic guitar, stripped down to the basics, I don't think they would hold up. Whereas if you see any of the stripped down performances of folklore/evermore songs they hold up because they are genuinely good songs. Same with the Dessner songs on this release. They mostly have good bones and then are built upon from there. Antonoff songs are just sugar with nothing underneath.

Overall I think this would have been better culled down to a single album of all the best songs (mostly Dessners).

What'd I'd love to see next is her dump Antonoff and pair with a real ball breaking type producer. Someone who values the album as an art form and who is going to force her to make an album of 12-14 songs of her best and ask the questions like "Is this good enough?" "What are you trying to say in this song? Is it something that HAS to be said? Have you already said it in one of the other songs?"

Of course this is all first listen. I reserve the right to change my mind wildly after more listens

I love Dessner. I need to go back through the album and keep track of the Dessner vs Jack songs

First Album:
11 Antonoff
4 Dessner
1 Both

Second Album:
3 Antonoff
11 Dessner
1 Both

She really could have made it one album off all Antonoff and one album of all Dessner

Currently at a 90 on metacritic but only 8 reviews tabulated so far. The NPR review is out as well and is very positive I'd say.

Also, the lyrics to But Daddy I Love Him are fantastic, hilarious, and savage towards her own "fanbase". So many Swifties feel such ownership over her that they cross into anti fan territory when she does something they don't like, and she gives them a giant **** You with that song. It's great.

A pet peeve of mine. Don't feature an artist just to have them background vocals. Put the man to work.

Some other recent examples where the feature turned out to worthless harmony vocal features that brought nothing to the song and were a waste of a feature.

"Half Of My Heart" - John Mayer "featuring" Taylor Swift
"Soon You'll Get Better" - Taylor Swift "featuring" the Dixie Chicks
"No Other Love" - Matchbox 20 "featuring" Amanda Shires

gotcha. I'm in the same boat though. My daughter plays her stuff nonstop and has become a connoisseur of cuss words lately. Somehow it sounds a lot cuter when sung.

my daughter listened to a few songs this morning before school. the main adjective i would use to describe what she listened to was boring. low energy and not very interesting.

really disappointing that half the songs are explicit as well, primarily for my daughter and her friends, but beyond that i have always found her usage of profanity incredibly cringe-worthy. it always just seems so forced and fake.

Taylor cursing upsets you?

I'm pretty sure she writes most if not all of her stuff. If so then her ability to craft and perform catchy song after catchy song after catchy song devoured by the masses is freakish. If it were easy to write stuff that millions of people love then a hell of a lot more musicians wouldn't have largley crap albums.

From what I've read about song titles, "hidden messages", and the lyrics from the new album...she is still a massive emotional idiot. Her emotional IQ is room temperature at the south pole.

Good job white knighting for her though, maybe some day she'll read this and track you down.

Does that mean we aren't going to get any Garrelli 5000 approved high emotional iq artists, sad. For the record I didn't know I was white knighting , me and my low emotional iq thought we were just calling you a moron. But if that means I am white knighting then…
