It's apparent you guys can't handle someone not falling in and following what you believe. Not once have any of you addressed what he said, you've only attacked me and him. His point of view must be relevant. I'm really surprised you haven't been banned as ad hominem attacks aren't allowed. But please, tell us again you aren't woke.
"What he said?" That's been addressed, because the first thing he said was that "a screenwriter should burn in hell" (a terrible thing for a Christian man to say). The rest of what he said has also been addressed, because the people who have *SEEN* the movie on this thread generally believe it's pretty good. And that would generally be a crowd who go see movies and opine on them, without "wokeness", not to just use them to stir up drama like Jason Whitlock and yourself.

I can promise you I am zero% woke.

I'm just smart enough to realize when somebody is stirring sht up for attention. (As Whitlock always does). (And you did too).

Super interesting read on how successful Coogler has been as a director, he's second only to Spielberg in box office through his first 5 films. Also touches on how much the film cost and the return we're looking at (also mentions some potential bias against him as a black filmmaker so be forewarned).

it is a pretty amazing achievement when you think about it.

I feel like historically, when you had a majority black cast, you're looking Tyler Perry style camp or drug biopics.

His ability to get a diverse set of people to buy tickets is fairly unprecedented.

He doesn't adjust for inflation.

Coogler would fall far from "#2 behind Spielberg" if he did. M Night would be leap years beyond that, among others.

That said- this movie was a risk at $95M. Coogler didn't get that bc he was black (neither is MNight). He got it bc there was a bidding war amongst people willing to take a risk. That's a crazy number for this type of movie.

Is the movie pretty good- yes. Are people praising it bc some people of color were involved? (Outside of troll Redstone)- no.

I'm certainly not planning on verifying, but he claims to adjust

  • Including a $200 million U.S./Canada estimate for "Sinners," his first five films will exceed $1.5 billion domestic (like all figures here and following, adjusted to today's ticket prices.

Sinners doing $40M+ in weekend 2 is insane. That's a 75+% hold, and horror usually *drops* 80% in week 2. And coming off a holiday weekend.

Guess Jason Whitlock (and the folks who promoted him *just for discussion* of course) were wrong.

Worse, you'll be WOKE in hell. Since the only reason you're seeing it is because it's a "black movie" and you're scared of what the woke mob will do to you if you don't see it and like it.

Such a shame.

I do not like horror / gory movies at all but went to see this because of Coogler and Michael B Jordan. Absolutely LOVED it. The music was phenomenal and I loved the scene that brought in all the eras from the past/future (which was jarring at first then turned into something so incredibly cool and beautiful).

We sat in the second row because every showing today was totally sold out.

Saw it yesterday with the wife and we both enjoyed it.

My only "complaint" was the klan showing up in the daylight. Seemed like they should have come that night. Then we could have had an epic slaughter by the vampires.

So, who were the sinners? I thought it was interesting that all the humans were doing something "sinful" while the vampires all talked about equality, togetherness, peace, love, etc.

I do admit, the KKK showing up in the morning didn't make much sense. Why would they assume none of them had left and that they all stayed the night at the club, so to speak? Unless I missed some key dialogue.

They were going to take whatever cash Smoke and Stack had generated overnight.

It looked great and actors were all in, but movie did not land for me. It didn't develop characters in a compelling way, went through a lot of story so quickly it felt forced to me. But I can say it was interesting, and cinematography is great, so I'm glad I saw it just didn't really grab me at all.

The shot of cultural musical history, while great as a standalone creation just seemed weird within this film and it took me out of where we were at in the story. Morning after KKK slaughter was forced and just felt like Tarantino-esque revenge porn which tends to be my least favorite of the Tarantino skills.

Wasn't familiar with director although I had seen his other big films. He was put on some franchise films early in his career so I don't think the box office comparisons early in career are fair to other directors who directed original material rather than Rocky or Marvel can't-fail pieces. However, I do think those movies were well made for what they are a part of and Sinners was interesting so I'll pay attention to what he does next.

That is seriously impressive staying power. Variety is going to have to eat its words, though they weren't exactly off base assuming a typical drop would lead to a potential loss with the film's budget.

I certainly agree that it took you out of the story and into a different world but that was kind of the point, because what came afterwards was essentially a whole different movie. His music generated such a powerful and transcendental spiritual presence that it also attracted the spirits of evil that wanted to corrupt his power and assimilate it for their own. That scene served as the fulcrum of a complete tonal and genre shift.

That scene was so damn cool. It started and I wasn't sure what to think and it quickly became something so unique and evoked such a visceral reaction that I was almost stunned. It just blew me away.

Great filmmaking there.

A good movie, very entertaining and well-made. Ever since 5 Bloods, I'm buying whatever Delroy is selling; that dude can act, and he elevated the movie. In fact all the "main" actors were incredible. But MBJ, to play both roles and make them different, was incredible work. Back to buying and selling, I've been a fan of Hailee since True Grit and Edge of Seventeen; I knew this girl could act and carry a scene. Glad she's catching some fire.

The horror wasn't that bad, and the rattlesnake in the truck scared me the most. I love the themes of music unifying all people, all sinners, to give them a way out, a path (bible verse from the beginning), and a way of dealing with their troubled times. Whether black, asian, Irish, mixed race, etc. All can be moved by the power of music. At first I thought it was about the white man(vampires) taking the blues, but I don't think that is it, I think the Irish vampire was drawn to it and wanted to be eternally connected.

Go see this movie in the theater, but most likely it will be on MAX before summer starts.

I can appreciate that, and that's how they tried to make it work, but it felt like they built a movie around that scene and not created a great scene within the natural flow of the story - even though I can see how they tried to use it to explain the vampires being summoned.

I was just reading some Coogler interviews to see what he had to say about the scene and did find him saying he had the conceptual idea of what he was visually explaining with that scene before he had the idea for the movie. And he felt the only project he could pull that type of scene off in was within a film, which he did.

Again, it was an incredible scene and piece of filmmaking, and a great message he was getting across with it, but I personally felt it was a bit forced to fit the film and took me personally out of the story a bit. I know most do not agree and I am ok with that, just sharing my feeling when watching it live. I'd like to watch that scene again, many times, but the entire movie maybe not.

Just got out and really enjoy it. Wasn't originally planning to see it, but all the buzz around it got us to go. The music is fantastic throughout. I loved the score during that first 20-30 minutes that really set the tone. The big musical set pieces - Preacher Boy's song with the different eras, the vampire Irish jig, and the stomp song with Stack was getting bitten - were so good and creative. Jordan did an awesome job creating two distinct characters. The rest of the cast did a nice job too.

Only nitpick is the cgi when the sun came up was a little cheesy, but not sure if there's a good way to do that.

Really liked the movie and would highly recommend it.

Thinking about this some more, if you're interested at all in seeing Sinners, you should definitely go see it in theatres. I think it's a good movie, but an excellent experience. The theatrics of it all (pun intended) and the musical elements are the biggest draw and I think it will ultimately play much better on the biggest screen possible than it will at home on a tv. It's not a bad movie story at all, but I think it will get dinged a little bit by the at home experience vs those who saw it on the big screen.

I saw this on Friday and really enjoyed it. To me it was Coogler's version of From Dusk Till Dawn, and I mean that as a compliment. A couple brothers on the run and they're trying to live through the night, but even if they do you know they'll always be running from something just trying to survive to the next day. Not only are they trying to survive, but they are looking to have a hell of a time in the process. To me the klan showing up the next morning was just to reinforce that they weren't as free as they thought, they'll have to fight their way through each day. I really liked the scene with the garlic, felt like the blood test scene from The Thing. Definitely a great movie to see at the theater so you get the full experience of the sound and music.
