Was just thinking about this after watching a few interviews of cast members talking about Tom Cruise on talk shows with this massive reverence...

Has he overtaken all living actors as the biggest movie star? The only people who you could possibly put ahead of him are Harrison Ford, Leo DiCaprio, Tom Hanks, and that's about it?

But even with them in mind, I think Cruise has more of a global appeal, and has gained massive respect in Hollywood in the last decade or so from Maverick and all his insane stunt work.

Maybe I'm a TC homer, but I think there's an uphill battle to name a brighter superstar than Cruise

Leonardo DiCaprio makes great films, but he seems to stick in his genre
Harrison Ford is a great actor, but if you're not a Star Wars fan, and too young to have an affinity for the Indy Jones movies, he's likely not a household name
If you look past his Scientology wackiness, I think you come to the conclusion that nobody can compete with him at such a high level, and for over a 40 year career of hit after hit after hit.

I got bogged down with family stuff, but I'm hoping to see this on IMAX Monday night. I'll be watching Fallout and Dead Reckoning over the weekend….and trying my best not to slip up and cheat by looking past spoiler blackouts

I think as a movie star (and bankability) there is no doubt his name pulls more weight than anyone else in Hollywood at the moment.

Tom Hanks had a shot at being ahead of TC, but he has fallen off a cliff recently so TC is there or past him - and if Ford can do Indy now then Cruise can go another 10 years in action no doubt

I get your point, but can't go with you on this. It's impossible to not know who Harrison Ford is.

Oh, it's possible…I asked the 28 year old geologist in my office if he knew who Harrison Ford was… he didn't even blink before he said 'no'. I asked him if he'd seen any of the Indiana Jones movies, and he said he thought he had, but couldn't remember for sure. But, I asked him if he had seen Top Gun: Maverick, he said yes, then said he was going to the midnight showing of the MI movie tomorrow

Very happy to report this movie does NOT suck.

Sure, the plot is ridiculously convoluted, and the twists and turns border on the comically absurd at times, but you just have to know that's what you're getting in a MI movie these days. If you just go with it, you'll have a great time.

I can't remember the last time I was as tense as I was during the submarine sequence. Just spectacular stuff.

And then they topped that, almost exponentially so, with the biplane sequence. Holy crap on a cracker, this scene tops every stunt they've ever done, and by a wide margin. Hell, probably the craziest stunt I've ever seen in any movie. My hands were sweating. At some point I had to laugh to myself in disbelief.

I still think Fallout is the all-around best movie in the franchise, but purely from a tension perspective, this one is pretty hard to top.

Needs to be seen in IMAX, which goes without saying.

Intel from my cousin in Dallas… she and her husband have tickets tonight to an Alamo Drafthouse showing that Cruise was scheduled to introduce/attend, but he cancelled last-minute. Apparently he ate at Pecan Lodge BBB for lunch and it made him so "tired" that he had to back out. Lights, camera crews, the whole nine - everything was set up and ready to go when my cousin noticed them suddenly start to pack up. She asked what was happening and they told her Cruise just cancelled and now everyone is pissed.

This was the text she just sent me: "WHO IS HIS MANAGER?!?!?! YOU NEVER EAT A HUGE BBQ LUNCH AND THINK YOU CAN MAKE IT ALL NIGHT."

The Syndicate?

The Entity?

Nope.

Turns out it was Texas BBQ that finally took down Ethan Hunt.

Pecan Lodge is ass so I understand it

Some of the worst bbq of the big names I have had in Dallas

Agree with the poster above
Very tense scenes many times over

And quite emotional a time or two

Loved it!!

Milchick was one of my favorite characters. He was great and I want him to join the crew.

I enjoyed it. This one had more heart than the others but I agree it's behind a few in ranking. I thought the submarine dive took a little too long and I wish there was either a car chase or motorcycle chase. It's been done several times before but I always enjoy a good chase. I hope Cruise comes back for more.

Dad and I went to the IMAX showing in Austin tonight, and we both loved it. I made the comment as we walked out "for as complex of a plot as that was, I actually followed it pretty well because they went so heavy on the exposition in the first hour". For casual fans of the series, there were wayyy too many callbacks and important plot points from previous installations, but at no point would you say "I have no idea what's going on".

By far my favorite set piece was the submarine scene. I was just absolutely entranced by what I was watching. The biplane was incredible but the submarine was some of the best tension / underwater nightmare fuel I've ever seen on film.

Milchek was awesome. Simon Pegg was perfect as always. The ending dragged out way too long but that was really my only complaint. Great flick

But why doesn't someone start a Spoilers thread?

Oh, and with Haley Atwell in it, I'm pretty good no matter what…just don't kill her on a bridge…

PS. Being a professional pilot,I can't wait to see the "Flying Scene"!

I dont think you can put those guys ahead of TC, maybe 10-20 years ago, but not now. TC's recent movies dont flop, they are all massive.

I think the only other guy in this discussion right now would be Ryan Reynolds. Maybe Ryan Gosling with the recent Barbie success? The Rock is probably a tier below TC right now.

I can't understand how you guys liked this movie. The first hour and 20 minutes was an absolute slog to get through...I literally thought it was edited by AI. It was like watching an hour+ long youtube of a MI recap. The submarine scene was the "best" part, but really made no sense. The bi-plabe scene was a good stunt for cruise, but was both a re-tread and there just for the "stunt". The complete movie was nonsensical...every time they said "The Entity"(100+ times) with a serious gravitas I just laughed. It was the worst dialogue I have heard in a movie in quite a while...Lord of Lies, 5D optical drives, etc ugh. They make such a huge deal about this 1 in a billion plan(the ONLY plan that can save the world), just for it to go to crap right away and they just say "let's wing it, we can do it!" Such horrible writing...has everyone forgot what a great action movie can be? Are we just paying to see 40-45 minutes of stunts in our 3 hour action flicks now?? I'm so confused.
The above is just an opinion, please take it as such...I rarely comment, but this movie is just sooooo boring and I had to say something.

for Asmith96, if you are a fan of Mission, you will enjoy this movie, but if you are not a fan of the series, you may not like it as much. Hopefully you saw Fallout

I will agree that this movie repeats itself but always a little better and tighter each time - and those repeats are part ot the enjoyment

I am a fan of the Mission Impossible films AND I thought the last two were complete crap. Money grabs at best. I can list 20 better action movies in the same time frame they were released in.A lot of you guys on here only deal in absolutes. There is nuance to this...I am a HUGE Star Wars fan, but do not like all Star Wars content...see how that works?

Exactly! See...absolutes. I don't like the new MI, so now I'm a woke liberal! Never change,Texags. lol

I NEVER said Fallout was crap?!? I said the last 2...Dead/Final Reckoning. Both are horrible imo.

I think that they are crap, even more so, because the 3 before them were so good...

Watched all 7 movies this week and saw Final Reckoning yesterday.

Lots of fun but the entity plot is not my favorite. Beautiful set pieces. Fun action. Solid call backs. Tom is the GOAT of this genre, and this franchise spanning 29 years is insane.

I am entertained

I think both Ryans are even farther away from that tier, because people my parents' age have little to no idea who they are.

Basically the reverse of the argument against Ford.

I think due to Hanks' star having fallen so far in the last 10 years, that probably put Cruise solidly at #1 now, either tied or slightly above Harrison Ford.

Leo is behind them mainly because he only puts out a movie every couple of years now.

I agree about the first hour. That was the weakest part of the movie and the main reason it's not the best in the franchise.

I guess it depends on how you define movie star. Ryan Reynolds and Ryan Gosling are two of the top 5 highest paid movie stars. Their films have done big numbers recently.

What was the last big movie Harrison Ford starred in? He hasnt starred in a big movie in forever. The last Indiana Jones movie was considered a box office bomb, the studio lost money. He isnt one of the highest paid actors.

I feel like Ford is now more well known for the tv show 1923 than he is for any of his movies.

More in terms of overall career, global fame/recognizability, and the ability to open a movie on their name alone.

RR has done great with Deadpool, but has he ever been a lead in a big blockbuster hit outside of that franchise?

Gosling has BR2049 (along with Ford), but that didn't exactly do gangbusters at the BO. Same for First Man. And then Fall Guy disappointed as well. (Which is unfortunate as I think both of those movie were pretty fantastic.) He does have Barbie too, forgot about that one. But more of a Margot Robbie movie than a Ryan Gosling movie.

Somehow I forgot about Will Smith. He would be in that upper tier with Cruise, above the Ryans.

Yea I guess I'm more referring to current state, not the past or overall career. Tom Cruise could release any movie right now and it's pretty much guaranteed to do big numbers. He is a mega star.

At one point, Will Smith, Will Ferrell, Jim Carrey etc were some of the highest paid actors and were doing big box office numbers, but not anymore. They could release a movie right now and there's higher chances it'll flop box office wise versus doing big numbers. The same is true of Harrison Ford, no one is going to show up to the movie theatre to watch him in a movie based on his name alone at the present time.

This is where guys like Tom Cruise differ. He's pretty much been a mega star for the last 30 years or so. One could argue he's an even bigger draw now than he was in the past. Hes been able to maintain mega star status for most of his career, where most big actors like the ones mentioned above typically have a peak and then fall off.

Project Hail Mary (2026) and Star Wars: Starfighter (2027) will likely take Gosling to the next level. Those are both going to be massive.
