I have read the book and seen the movie a few times. It was an entertaining movie, but it was not the book. I'd like to see a movie that aligns more closely to the book.

Biggest gripe that took me out of the movie was Denise Richard's being impaled through her shoulder right before picking up a machine gun to mow down some bugs.

I'm not sure that you can really do the book justice in a mainstream film. To my recollection, much of the book is less about killing bugs and more about exploring philosophical topics.

Mine was the lack of Denise Richards being in the shower and tent scenes with Dizzy.

It should also be pointed out that Starship Troopers had the perfect casting with Patrick Muldoon as "Handsome guy who is totally trying to cock block you by being her buddy during training and is going to get in there the minute you get deployed."

That's what I recall as well, but it's been a LONG time since I read it.

Original was a fighting bugs in space. They said, this is close to Starship Troopers so they took the names and incorporated a few things.

Screenplay was not based on the book.

"I want to make a movie that's so painfully obvious I didn't read the book, that everyone who has read the book is constantly psychologically tormented by those who have only seen the movie." -Paul Verhoeven

While I have come to appreciate the over the top satire Verhoeven film, I would like to see a film more in the spirt of the Heinlein novel. More Marines in space, less Nazis in space.
I haven't read the book, but I saw the movie in the theater when it came out. I have no idea what are you talking about.
Highly recommend reading the book - keeping in mind, it was published in 1959.

I doubt it. The History and Moral Philosophy teacher in the book was Col. Jean Dubois (Ret.).

Lt. Rasczak was a completely different character and barely mentioned in the book.

Dizzy was a dude and is only involvement in the story is dying on the way up after being rescued by Johnny and Ace, Carl Jenkins (Neil Patrick Harris in the movie) is a minor character, Carmen and Johnny aren't romantically involved and also not from Buenos Aires and Johnny is a Filipino.

Jake Busey's character is a combination of two different characters from the book.

As others have mentioned, the screenplay had zero to do with the book. They just adapted names and places from the book and crammed them into the story so they could sell the name.

ironically Paul Verhoeven made the movie to CONDEMN fascism

and all the critics have been yelling for 20 years "it's a fascist movie!"

hilarious that the most famous actor from that movie is Doogie Howser

Didn't they wind up having a fling while Johnny was in officer school or something?

Let me guess - the main characters will now be girl bosses and the alien insectoids will be misunderstood "noble savages" fighting a just, ecologically sound battle against Nazi whitey (like the blue Indians in Avatar).

It was HEAVILY implied in the movie that the meteor which destroyed Buenos Aires was a false flag operation and the bugs were victims.

Tell me you haven't seen Wild Things without telling me you haven't seen Wild Things.

About as perfect a bod as there is.

I'd rather have their tactical chassis Mini-14 that fires unlimited rounds from a standard sized magazine. Be the envy of everybody at the range.

Meh, this thing is a classic because of how over the top it is. I say lean in and don't try to make it like every other sci-fi alien shooting movie that has been released recently.

More nazis in space. More ridiculous "I'm doing my part" ads.

More hot women naked in the shower...the more you look, the more you know.
don't know if this is true but I read the actors (both male and female) weren't all that thrilled about shooting that scene and they all said as a group they'd only agree to do it if the director got naked during its filming….
I am not sure about that. Nudity requirements are a part of the casting breakdowns. Getting cast then being difficult about doing the nudity will get you black listed by casting. Especially on a big budget movie. But who knows maybe they did. I've had to deal with it on one of my exploitation movies and we had to re-shoot two days with new actresses.

your comment got me curious so I went down the rabbit hole and apparently it is true and apparently on the dvd commentary as well as confirmed by the actors and director in some different interviews which I'll quote here….

However it doesn't necessarily say it was planned like you mentioned and also it sounds like this director is a bit more…uh…."open" to these things than most folks so I'm assuming this was an idea he had that wasn't necessarily in the original script OR it wasn't so much the actors drawing a hard line not to do it but just apprehensive and so he did this to make them at ease….its actually kinda funny and a good read here you go:

Quote:

One day's filming that didn't make it into the Making Of is an apocryphal incident during the marines' mixed-gender shower scene that Verhoeven happily confirms he stripped off for too to soothe his nervous young cast.

"Yeah, sure I did that. And it helped!" he says proudly. "My DoP Jost Vacano and I, we undressed and of course then everyone started to laugh. Then we shot the scene with no problem. Jost grew up in these, let's say nudity camps [sic], so he had no problem with it. For me, it was a bit more difficult but I said to Jost, 'Hey, we need to give an example...' He said 'Of course,' and boom!"

Quote:

Unfortunately a few members of the cast detected not just a subtle political and psychological critique of the authoritarian mind but somewhat typical sensationalism from the director who had, after all, delivered Sharon Stone's infamous leg-cross in Basic Instinct only five years before. "One cast member said they would only get naked if we did," says Verhoeven, "Well, my cinematographer was born in a nudist colony and I have no problem with taking my clothes off, so we did. It is strange, but of course Americans get more upset about nudity than ultra-violence. I am constantly amazed about that. I mean, I haven't seen any sex scenes in American film that are anything other than completely boring. A bare breast is more difficult to get through the censors than a body riddled with bullets."

Quote:

At this weekend's ComiCon in Toronto, Casper Van Dien and Dina Meyer (aka Rico and Dizzy) confirmed the long-standing legend that the cast refused to strip down unless their director did the same (albeit Verhoeven got to stay behind the camera while his clothes were off). A lot of people would prefer to face an entire hive of Arachnids before baring all on the big screen but, as the 20-year anniversary of the film approaches, Meyer and Van Dien remain unfazed by the experience of being nude among their co-stars. Seeing their director naked is another story.

"It was probably about 100 people in the room," recalled Meyer, "and Paul's like 'Before we start shooting we want you guys to get comfortable with the nudity.' So he basically had us do a bit of a fashion show without the fashion. We were a little reluctant to disrobe, and Paul was like, 'I don't understand you Americans! What's the big deal? Just do it, it's fine, no problem!'"

"And Dina," interjected Van Dien, "says 'Paul, if it's no big deal why don't you do it?' And so he dropped his drawers and all of us were like 'Augh, god! Dina! Why!?' So thanks to Dina, we've all seen Paul Verhoeven's… Verhoeven."
