Agreed. The basement stuff with Tim Robbins is tense as hell in the best way, but there are also some odd beats, the movie loses a little momentum, etc, and collectively it just kind of falls short of the amazing first half.

I forgot how good/creepy he is in this movie. Feel like Spielberg could have changed just a few minutes of the second half, and it's borderline perfection. Still worthy of a rewatch every 1-2 yrs though. The first attacks near their home, and the unfolding fear and pandemonium, jarred me in a way not many movies have. Peeps just getting vaporized on the run...the visuals...the sounds of the damn things...YEESH.

Also, the whole bit Spielberg said about Christians second guessing their religion was dumb.

This is silly. Why would it cause Christians to queston their faith and not Jews or Muslims? For some, it would have implications re: the creator. Why would this only cause Christians to get "shaky" in their beliefs, but not anyone else? I genuinely do not get it.

Again, not tying to jump into spoilers yet, and I think the reason Spielberg only said Christianity is because it involves one of the characters background. It wasnt really done in a global way if that makes sense. Kind of comparable to strictly Mel Gibsons character in signs and not the whole cast.

Ah ok gotcha, I took it as a general societal statement.

I saw it, it was ok, really liked the start.

Many aspects of the chase were just done bad though. For an agency that apparently did an unbelievable job at keeping a secret this big for several decades, they stunk at their jobs the last two days. The ONLY time someone finally shoots at him is a conveniently hard situation to hit him.

10/10. Great movie for a number of reasons that I won't get into and are personal for me.

Catch Me If You Can is such a fantastic movie.

It was great when it came out and somehow has aged like a fine wine since then.

It's also one of my dad's favorite movies because my grandpa read the book back in the 80's and told my dad Frank's story. My dad thought it was an unbelievable story.

So he'd sort of built up the legend in his mind for decades. And Leo has been one of his favorite actors since.

It also helps that my dad is an aviation enthusiast and The Aviator came out shortly after, another favorite of his.

2018 - Ready Player One = Has really grown on me over the years.
2017 - The Post = Fantastic.
2016 - The BFG = Never saw it.
2015 - Bridge of Spies = Fantastic.
2012 - Lincoln = All-timer.
2011 - War Horse = Meh.
2011 - The Adventures of Tintin = Never saw it.
2008 - Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull = Good first half, terrible second half.
2007 - Munich = Fantastic.
2005 - War of the Worlds = Incredible first half, decent second half.
2002 - Catch Me If You Can = All-timer.
2002 - Minority Report = All-timer.
2001 - A.I. Artificial Intelligence = Part masterpiece, part a-little-too-weird-at-times.

Agree with most of this, but War Horse was really good.

I just got home from seeing Disclosure Day. I will say this - Spielberg always seems to know how to pull me in right from the start, push the right emotional buttons in me, and not let go. This was my favorite Spielberg movie since Bridge of Spies. Was it perfect? Hardly. The CGI animals were not great. It also didn't match the greatness that is Close Encounters of the Third Kind, but that is an incredibly high bar.

If I had to pinpoint a disappointment, it would be in scanning all the released footage toward the end with not even a glimpse of Devil's Tower. Missed opportunity IMO.

Trailers - The Odyssey, Spider-Man, Supergirl, Fast and Furious re-release, The Dog Stars, something with Brad Pitt and a dog, a Jason Statham action flick, and one that amazed both me and the wife, Jimmy, about the actor Jimmy Stewart. We were amazed at how much the actor sounded like Jimmy Stewart.

Those stylized opening credits with the John Williams jazz score. Amazing.

If the movie had ended right there, it would have been worth the price of admission.

I really liked it and it's pretty much what I had hoped for. I don't get the complaints about the animals - they were perfectly fine for the 2 minutes or so they were used, not a big deal. I liked the timing of things with the other news - the timing was clearly intended to impact that yet not be the main point of the movie.

I went this evening and liked it and believe another viewing without the anticipation created by trailers, SS interviews, and the build up within this thread, may make for a much more entertaining experience. I honestly expected more. I agree with the parallel themes mentions. It felt like a Spielberg movie but not on the same level of Close Encounters. I actually liked the Christianity aspect and agree with the summation by one of the characters. There isn't some big crisis of faith in my opinion.

The CGI for a major motion picture was subpar but not horrible. Again, I expected more and that may be on me more than the movie…

Not saying I agree with this take but when I mentioned the crap CGI animals my wife said she felt like that was on purpose to represent that they weren't real and alien visualizations of the animals.

Here's my conspiracy theory- they got Spielberg to do this along with the release of the UFO files being released to soft launch the reality of extraterrestrial life so it isn't so jarring.

2026 - Disclosure Day = Meh. I see what could have been great, but they spent too much time on the parts I didn't like
2022 - The Fablemans = Very good
2021 - West Side Story = Liked it
2018 - Ready Player One = Thought the key challenges were really well done, very cinematic, but as I expected as a book reader, the story in between just didn't have time to develop. Needed an 8-10 hour streaming series rather than a 2.5 hour movie
2017 - The Post = Loved it
2016 - The BFG = Saw once, only thing I remember is being bored
2015 - Bridge of Spies = Amazing
2012 - Lincoln = Amazing
2011 - War Horse = Really good, thing I remember the most is the cinematography
2011 - The Adventures of Tintin = I was shocked how much I love this movie. I could rewatch it forever. Basically animated Indiana Jones
2008 - Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull = As I said to my brother in the theater as soon as the credits rolled: "I don't necessarily mean this in a bad way, but what the hell was that?" I will say the last time I watched it, it wasn't AS BAD as I remembered. If nothing else, it gave us "nuked the fridge"
2007 - Munich = Amazing
2005 - War of the Worlds = Thought it was OK
2002 - Catch Me If You Can = Very good
2002 - Minority Report = Cool sci-fi
2001 - A.I. Artificial Intelligence = I found this movie too weird to enjoy, but I've always wondered if I revisited it now, would I appreciate it more

Just another way to look at the movie whether it is correct or not

There's much to be said here, but I'll keep it concise:

- Spielberg and Koepp are well informed on the many threads of UFO lore
- they chose the "Chariots of the Gods" path, where meta-physical "revelations," past, present, future, were (it's strongly implied) mediated by one alien race

There were superior threads to pull, alas
Redstone
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
What example of a superior thread?

A quick procedural about whistle-blower protections, followed by material evidence of secret programs with nonhuman technologies, in mountain ranges and deep underground military bases …. with humans alongside the supposed four general types of entities we've encountered (grey, nordic, reptilian, insectiod)

I liked it. I'd give it a 6/10. At the end, when the alien stood up and towered over the two of them, my girlfriend leaned over and whispered "it looks like that guy who plays for the spurs."

1/10.

Dont bother spending $$$ for the theater, wait for streaming.

Extremely slow. Poor character development.
I didnt give one **** about any character, their story or the direction. Even the score was terrible. 1/2 through i started looking at my watch to figure out how much longer I had to wait.

Movie seems like a gigantic dud.

Once again hype and "experts" drive interest above and beyond what actually gets delivered

Anyone saying it was Close Encounters 2.0 must have watched a different movie. CE is one of my all time favorites.

Usually I reserve going to the theaters for the big picture for action scenes and for the sound. You could watch this on a 1994 30" tube TV with basic sound and not miss anything.

So absolutely disappointed in this. CGI was terrible as well.

I was looking forward to being awestruck and now I'm just bummed out. Its so bad I wont even bother to rewatch when its free.

Question for those that have seen it like I have.

If you saw this movie and didn't know who directed it, and someone asked you who did, would Spielberg even make your top 5 guesses? Wouldn't at all for me. John Williams even did the score and it didn't even feel like him.

So much stupid lens flare i would have guessed Michael Bay. Except it was so slow and uneventful I would have guessed his brother who'd never made a movie before.

Also, no idea if he has a brother.

San Antonio or Tottenham? Very important distinction because I'm imagining two vastly different (but equally disturbing) aliens.

I'd give it 5.5 out of 10. I doubt I will ever watch it again and this is coming from someone who rewatches Close Encounters about once a year.

The Wardex security team were a bunch of bumbling idiots and completely useless beyond moving the plot along.

The movie lacked what I would call the Spielberg aesthetic, it just doesn't translate well to modern times and he should really stick to period piece movies.

Anything to do with Jane and her faith I was fine with, but having some random woman from Hugo's team make the sign of the cross and drop to her knees to worship Margaret felt completely forced/lazy. Spielberg would never have the balls to represent the Jewish and/or Muslim faith in such a condescending manner.

Not sure if it was shaky camera stuff or if I was just sitting too close for that big XD style screen. But I started to get a little dizzy/sick to my stomach.

That happens to me occasionally, but I usually just get up & walk outside for a second or otherwise fight through it. But more than an hour into this movie, I decided I really didn't care enough about this story to struggle through it. So I just left.

Guess I will catch the ending when it hits tv later.

That nausea was just from the plot.

7/10 for me. I don't think I much to add to the thread other than:

I found it to be a pretty outdated idea that they felt like they had to get to a medium sized market's NBC news affiliate to get the story out to the public. Just put that **** on x and YouTube.

Edit to add:

I thought the "Listen" at the end was meant to be the start of a statement that we didn't get to hear the rest of. Figured that meant setting up for a sequel (I know, not very Spielberg-y). But after looking into it more online, I guess that's supposed to be the entire statement, it's a message to the audience both in the movie and sort of breaking the 4th wall… I really ****ing hate that.
