I haven't read every post on this thread but has anyone figured out how Hugo....knew the stuff he did?

Also, Emily Blunt's American accent was the most distracting thing to me...

I was under the distinct impression that Hugo worked intimately with the alien during his time at Wardex, and thus learned everything from the alien. There were two or three quick references to this.

That's what I assumed (his job title on the screen hinted at that) but the alien would have had to implant memories for him to perfectly reconstruct what he did...

Seems well within the alien's ability to do that, no? That's what I assumed.

On one of the screens at Wardex when Colin Firth brought his bio up, it said Hugo's title was something like "Director, Biological Entities" or similar

I didn't say War of the Worlds. Obviously that one wouldn't work.

And not really agreeing on it contradicting anything. Would just be a fun nod to those movies.

The ending as is is pretty underwhelming anyway.

And how did they smuggle out the ancient alien in his Tupperware Pod Wheelchair (TM)?

This is where the entire plot of "delivering the message" that aliens exist via classified government video when you HAVE an alien thats cooperating or even driving exposure of the truth.

This stupid movie makes "Independence Day" more believable. And it answers zero questions of "Why are you here?"

You are trying way too hard.

I did not like the latest Jurassic movie like you don't like this movie. I said I thought that movie stunk and moved on. I'm not going to waste time telling people over and over why they should not like a movie.

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not.

In a world where aliens can...

- make people see them as animals

- make their craft appear as a giant gingerbread house house

- give Emily Blunt's character the ability to speak foreign languages / read minds / turn people invisible

- give Josh O'Connor's character the ability to become a math genius

... why is it not realistic that the aliens would have an exact blueprint of Blunt's character's childhood home/bedroom, either taken from her memories or having literally been in her bedroom themselves?

Given the rules of the world, that seems extremely plausible.

I feel the exact opposite. Imo, that was one of the best, most emotional third acts/endings I've seen in a blockbuster in quite some time.

I liked it but was disappointed. Emily Blunt's performance was fantastic. I agree with the comments about the implausibility of the chase scene antics. In fact, Emily's linguistic abilities are more believable. Overall, I was expecting a 'bigger' movie, but still enjoyed it.

Meh.

Our belief in God is so incredibly fragile that the existence of life outside this world means we would worship it and/or fundamentally cease to believe. It was important for them to repeatedly make this point, despite my going in having zero concern that aliens had anything to do with belief in Christ.

Also, it was silly. Main bad guy just stops because 5 years ago he was a good man. Kind of. It's unclear. We are kind of led to believe since the Nixon admin it was a good organization that only recently lost its way? And the back up bad guy just decided to run off with all of his men instead of actually doing something.

Frst 75% kept me entertained. The landing left me wondering why I wasted my time.

Yeah I said this elsewhere. Two of the foundational elements of this movie are:

1. The presence of aliens will create a conflict with religion so severe that maybe we should cover it up, and

2. The revelation of aliens will be so stunning that humans will put aside their fights because they are struck by awe.

Neither one of these things seems earned or supported by the movie.

Readers of the UAP thread know I believe in the supernatural (God), the preternatural (angel-ic / demon-ic, narrow terms for 2nd Temple era authors), the meta- (or, beyond) physical, such as the 2nd Heaven of St. Paul, and other creations, some faithful and some fallen, we only catch glimpses of. Aliens, yes.

That said, Dreher captures my thoughts here. It's a gnostic film with some Christian inversions, and a collaborator such as Timothy Alberino would have been much better.

I had to hit the restroom 2x during the showing, did they mention why the world was falling apart in the background before the disclosure? All I know about it was the gas station chaos scene.

Overall entertaining movie for me and blunt is...so choice.

No - there were lots of background items about a conflict growing in Korea (even her anchor audition reel and the start of the broadcast when she was rushing in were about it) and other countries being involved, but nothing of detail. Which, honestly, I'm fine with. I loved Civil War and it has even LESS background on a more confusing topic - I don't need you to explain all the plot elements. But I DO need them to exist in service of a recognizable, complete thematic message.

As far as expectations, this movie was one of the most underwhelming I've seen in a while. Nothing really original about it. It's like they asked ai to create a script based off ET and the Goonies and CEOTTK. People were laughing during the movie it was so bad. I almost fell asleep.
I hope I did not offend anybody with this post. If I did, please come see me at my address in my profile so we can talk.

I really liked this movie. This felt more like classic Spielberg than anything he's done in a while, especially so with the Williams "throwback" score.

Question for those that have seen it like I have.

If you saw this movie and didn't know who directed it, and someone asked you who did, would Spielberg even make your top 5 guesses? Wouldn't at all for me. John Williams even did the score and it didn't even feel like him.

The hopeful thread throughout the film with zero cynicism makes me think I would guess that ot was him

These were my exact thoughts. And I think Spielberg thinks way too highly of himself with his comments about shaking your faith to the core….

I enjoyed the movie. But I sure do not think it was a classic or overwhelming in any way. Good. Not great.

Saw it last night with a group of friends, including two of their teenage sons. We all thought it was just ok. Afterward we were explaining to the two teenagers that we had high expectations and listed off some of the movies Spielberg is famous for and one of them said "Oh, I wouldn't have thought this director had made anything that good. This one was fake-deep and just kinda ass." Wouldn't have phrased it that way, but sadly agreed.

Not sure I buy all of that but he is right on about the part involving the abduction of the kids. Trying to turn that into a good thing and "empathy" is sick.

Wife and I saw it last night. We enjoyed it although it has some weaknesses.
The sneaking up to the fence and grabbing a Charger that still had the key fob inside was dumb. He should have turned and run to the woods the opposite direction of the house as soon as he got off the phone with Margaret.

As touched on earlier in the thread, the ability for Hugo to have so much insight into what The Greys believe and what they can offer is reminiscent of the alien in Super 8 touching Dr. Woodward (the teacher) and later Alice and then having a psychic connection with the alien.

The Greys touched Margaret and Daniel when they were kids but somehow delayed when their "gifts" would manifest.

Spielberg consulted with J.J. Abrams on Super 8, and this is a commonality between the aliens in each film.

I saw the act of Disclosure Day to be a callback to a classic sci-fi film (and my dad's favorite), The Day The Earth Stood Still. The Earth did stand still while the disclosure was being broadcast. To the point that Russian troops stopped what they were doing and were glued to their phones.

Passengers on planes were all watching their phones while the planes stayed aloft, just like in the classic movie where Klaatu said some things would be unaffected.

I really felt that was an intentional callback.

One thing about the train/car collision that I liked was how long the car stayed attached to the train. My step-dad was an engineer for Union Pacific for 33 years and had a few interactions with vehicles. He did have someone hit the train and get dragged a long way down the tracks before a piece of the car broke loose and separated them. Not as long as in the movie but it was actually not as unrealistic as some might think.

Kicking out the windshield and climbing onto a railcar before being hit by a passing train, yeah, that's not happening.

There won't be a sequel. It's left for us to decide how things play out.
