Varsity Blues. The last game they played in high school was the district championship. No regionals, no state championship. They just stopped after district.

I watched High School Musical with one of my kids a couple of months ago because her school's theater department was putting on a performance of it. Troy's basketball team has a single playoff game, which they know about 3 weeks in advance, to win the championship.

Why do the giant eagles keep showing up to save hobbits, wizards, and dwarfs only at the most perilous moments? Could they not fly them all the way to the Lonely Mountain or Mount Doom to begin with? Feels like they're really under utilizing them for travel and could have saved a lot of time

Because the eagles were highly intelligent beings with free will. They're smarter than men and couldn't just be summoned. Plus like men, the Eagles would've been corrupted and tempted by the Ring. They understood that taking on the Ring would've been a death sentence, plus with the Nazgul, Sauron would've known they were coming and would've just put all of his defenses at Mount Doom

They needed that time to all get their head in the game.

Shawshank is pretty close to perfect but seems pretty unlikely one prisoner would stay in the same cell for almost 20 years.

Andy was making bank for the warden, which is why he didn't have a cellmate & why he kept the same cell.

Perhaps regarding the sewer pipes (which are not under pressure - they gravity drain) the night he busted in it was raining. So perhaps a lot of the gas & waste was flushed out and leaked through the hole he created making the air more breathable.

But Andy went thru the sanitary line. Not the storm water line. Rain shouldn't have affected anything related to flow.

Also, any maintenance worker that ended up going in and finding that hole in the pipe might have died from merhane or H2S exposure in that space. Andy was a killer.

Raiders of the Lost Ark is also one I remember debating for years, and now it is pretty damn common. Indy doesn't impact the movie. If he doesn't go, Nazis still find the ark and die.

This is a completely new theory to me, so much that I had to look up it's origin.

Not sure this was the source of your debate but apparently this was some gag on The Big Bang Theory, which was a terrible show altogether. I mean it was a huge stinker that everyone convinced themselves that they loved because it made the outcast weirdo dork watchers feel like they were part of a smart, edgy take on how cool nerds really are. But I digress...

First of all, I have a hard time fathoming "debating for years" on a fictional movie. Goes back to the Venn diagram of people who like Big Bang Theory I guess?

Getting into an argument about why Indy doesn't affect the outcome of the movie is ludicrous, so much so that I won't even refute how dumb it is.

The Star Wars debates are funny but something that always bothered me (well, made me chuckle really) is how near the beginning of the movie when they find the Obama Presidential Library, err Jawa Sand Crawler all shot up, Obi Wan says that the shots were much too accurate to have been Sand People. It could only have been Imperial Storm Troopers.

Then we spend the remainder of the movie and franchise watching Storm Troopers shoot with the accuracy of Ray Charles.

The Rock, when Connery and Cage are breaking back into the prison, Sean rolls through a complicated series of fire and man crushing gear type things, emerges from the other side and opens the door for Cage. Why didn't Connery just go out the door when was breaking out of the prison?

we watched this last night for our 13yr old's first viewing - thought the same thing! seen the movie 100 times and it never occurred to me until yesterday.

When the story happens, combined storm and sewer lines weren't uncommon. I think this may be supported by the fact that at the end he just pops out of a pipe at some type of water runoff.

I've always wondered why he got sprayed in the face by human waste when he broke open the pipe given the level of the contents inside.

Combined would make sense on the getting sprayed part. And the not being asphyxiated part.

(1) In 1985, Adult Biff is an asshat.
(2) Marty goes to 1955, changes past.
(3) Marty returns to 1985, Adult Biff is neutered.
(4) 2015 Doc goes to 1985, collects Marty and Jennifer. They go to 2015.
(5) In 2015, Old Biff steals DeLorean.
(6) Old Biff goes to 1955, gives Almanac to Young Biff, changing the past.
(7) Old Biff then somehow returns to the same 2015 to stash the Delorean for Marty and Doc.
(8) Marty goes home to 1985, except now it's bad 1985.

Old Biff should have never been able to return to the same 2015 where he stole the DeLorean, just like how Marty couldn't return to the same 1985 with Asshat Biff. And we know it's not the same 2015, because George McFly is dead in Bad 1985.

I'll go one further with Major League. The final play call is a stolen base with Jake Taylor's bunt. The Ruthian called shot is nice theatre. The Duke buzzes the tower in retaliation.

The problem is that Willie Mays Hays would have been stealing on the pitch that buzzes the tower (called steal), not the following pitch when Taylor actually lays the bunt down.

Maybe Willie missed the sign on the pitch that buzzed Jake. Hard to believe with how excessive the signs were, but it's Willie, so who knows?

As thrilling as the walk-off bunt was in Major League, and as wild and entertaining as the Indian fans were inside the stadium, the regular season head to head results would have put the single game tiebreaker in New York, not Cleveland.

Speaking of sports movies, the final scenes of Remember the Titans made me think that the filmmakers didn't really understand the rules of football. Why is the opposing team not taking a knee? Why risk a fumble? Then to compound the mistake, somehow the Titans have to take a timeout following the change of possession to stop the clock?

Remember the titans took liberty with the guy who got in a car crash (Gary burtier I think). That part of the movie always bothered me with how sad it was and imo doesn't add that much to the story. Would've been epic to seen him in the last game.

Googled it and turns out that guy got in a car crash after the season so Disney did that just to f with us for dramatic effect

If that inaccuracy bothers people, wait until they learn that the real school was playing against teams that were also integrated. Kinda defeats the whole point of the story.

On the Major League note: I always found it odd that they celebrated so much and it was this huge ending... but it wasnt the World Series. It was just the ALCS. Always made me ask if that used to be a bigger deal. "Winning the pennant".

I don't know if it was truly a bigger deal to win the league rather than the WS. Remember Pop Fisher in The Natural, who claimed he really only wanted to win the league pennant. While that was fiction, I did echo the sentiment in 2005 when the Astros finally won a league pennant but went 0fer in the World Series, probably as a coping mechanism.
Fenrir

Winning the pennant was a bigger deal prior to divisions being instituted. There wasn't a playoff, just the top team from each league playing for the WS.

What's funny is that that the Yankees are the big villlains, regardless. In real life, they were in the midst of their longest streaks without a WS title (19 years) and playoff appearance (14 years) when the movie came out. They are just easy to hate.

There was a playoff. The NLCS and ALCS were a best-of-5 series before the creation of the Central Division.

In the movie, the last game against the Yankees was a one-game playoff (regular season tiebreaker) to determine which team would go on to the ALCS.

I like debating this one.

Realize that in BTTF 1 when Marty goes back in time and knocks his father out of the road he doesn't immediately disappear, it takes a week of fading to remove his brothers hair and then his head and almost to Marty

The movie presents the idea that it isn't instantaneous.

now to number 7 and 8 on your list.

When Biff returns to 2015 things DO start to change just not instantaneous. Biff looks bad and seems to be ready to die, trash seems to blow in, and the weather changes. This means things are starting to change but haven't fully, just like the picture fading.

Meaning if Marty had stayed in 2015 it would have eventually changed all around him, but that's not what happen. He got in the DeLorean and went back to the "correct" changed 1985. It makes sense, "from a certain point of view."

You're close. The LCS went to best of 7 in '85. Central division wasn't added until '94.
