I laughed at first, but that might happen over around the next 20-ish years. Many of those countries (and Japan) are racing to depopulate as well at very much-so accelerating rates. But that includes China and Russia too.

It's real tough to be optimistic about global security/peace through the next 30 years. Yet another reason not to engage in any needless proxy wars right now.

I would say if the current lines are frozen it is still a feat that tiny Ukraine was able to fend off the mighty Russia and Putin for the most part. They would continue to exist as a country. Sorry, maybe you missed it. The post I was responding to was about the 20% of formerly Ukrainian land that Russia currently holds. Consensus seems to be that Ukraine will not get that back, so UAS Ag's question about how to hold an election in those areas was completely moot. It sounds like we agree.

That's valid once they are formally ceded to Russia and Ukrainians in those areas are able to freely go to other areas in Ukraine.

Holding elections NOW is essentially ceding the ENTIRE territory prior to negotiations for the end of the war.

I guess if you want to suck at negotiating then you could do that, but it seems like a bad idea to me.
