I have three educators/former educators in my immediate family. Elementary, HS, and college level. They all agree that the Dept of Education needs to be abolished and that we need vouchers now. I have no idea how any objective person world disagree.

A fear of someone not being educated is so far beyond stupid, it's not worth the argument. What we have now is a complete disaster.

Some people are concerned because of the federal regulations around IDEA. If the Department of Education goes, I guess IDEA would also go, and parents will have to start over with the state government. Texas doesn't love public education, especially when kids with special needs are involved. The law gives parents a leg to stand on when advocating for their children to people in control of limited resources. Need to eliminate bloated administration and fancy stadiums.

It's so easy to say if you don't like it, move. I'm not saying it shouldn't happen, but it could be very painful, especially for families already dealing with various types of hell, or at the least, complications. It would help people if they had time to start lobbying before the plug is pulled. If you have no sympathy for that, congrats on it not being your problem. That's one blessing you have.

The same people that think reducing federal income taxes means fewer fire fighters think abolishing the Dept of Education means getting rid of public schools altogether.

I guess the same reason every teacher I know starts shrieking uncontrollably any time they hear the word "voucher".

It's not like since the day the DOE was created spending per student has skyrocketed, and achievement has plummeted… Oh wait. It's exactly like that.

But I wonder how this will impact my niece who has severe dryslexia. I know the public schools provided special accommodations for her, and my understanding is the public universities will do the same.

Also, I needed financial aid to get through college, i don't know how I would have got through college without it. I assume the dept of education provides that as well.

I actually had several part time jobs at A&M, but the money I made from those seemed like pocket change compared to the bills I had. Plus it was harder pursuing my engineering degree when I was working 20 to 30 hours a week. I eventually stopped most of the part time work and just got the max or close to the max on my financial aid each semester.

I think if the cost was a third of what it was back then, I still would have needed financial aid, but maybe the part time work money would have come closer to paying my bills. At the same time I don't know if I could have kept working like I did for the 5 years it took me to get my degree.

Once I graduated I paid off my student loans I'm 3 or 4 years. I remember a few years later I was making 120k a year and my rent was 400 dollars a month. I learned to live frugal. That's a far cry though to my monthly carry now.

The way I look I it I could give $100 to the DOE, they give $80 to the State. State gives $70 to school district.

Or I could give $100 to the district.

I know my corruption in there is lacking a lot of grift, but what else am I missing?

Or you give $100 to DOE,
They take $35 for overhead expenses and give $65 to the state, which takes $15 for overhead and they give $50 to the local school district.

I would assume your niece will be taken care of by the Texas (or whatever state) dept of education. I don't understand why we need state departments AND federal...too redundant.

Also, if there is anything the gov't can do, it is find another agency to disperse money. There are too many to count that could disperse the financial aid.

The results highlight what a bangup job the DOE is doing for academics.

Not sure what state they are in, but that's a strong assumption for Texas. I hope I'm wrong. Texas is currently trying get rid of 504 plans which may cover dyslexia.

I hear push for 4 day school with extended hours or year round and the only pushback I get is "I don't have enough PTO to watch kids"
