There's been 24,000,000 cases of influenza resulting in 310,000 hospitalizations and 13,000 deaths since October 2024 but today is the first time it's even been mentioned. Regular flu must not be very profitable.

Multiple districts across Texas have shut down to clean and break the cycle. It's finally run its course in our district but it hit hard. I started getting sick 1-20 and I still have a cough that won't go away. This flu is nothing to shake a stick at this year

"Shake a stick at" means "a large quantity of something, more than one can count," essentially indicating a very large number of things; it's often used in the phrase "more than you can shake a stick at.".

Example: "There are so many stars in the sky, it's more than you can shake a stick at.".

Key points:
Meaning: A very large amount.
Usage: Always used with the phrase "more than you can".
Origin: The exact origin is unclear, but it might be related to the idea of counting animals by pointing a stick at them.

It's a bad flu season

People are dying from flu like they always do

But we aren't panicking because we accept that there is nothing we can realistically do to stop it, particularly when it's a strain that deviated from the annual flu vaccine

Because we accept reality, there's no political gain to be made from pretending this is unusual and we need to shut down society to hide from it

In 49 years of life, I've never had a flu shot and I've never had the flu…

Coincidence?

Because I traveled a lot during flu season working boat shows, shaking hands 200 times a day in six states with people I would always get the flu. Family doc told me to start getting flu shots. For the next 25 years I got the shot and never got sick. Coincidence? I don't know.

My son got sick and I immediately took him to urgent care because school sent out an email that someone had been diagnosed with pertussis. Not a big deal in a teen but if we could treat it and minimize school days missed, I wanted to do that. Turns out it was flu A and we caught it early so we started him on Tamiflu. Then husband got it. Then I got it. We all started Tamiflu on day 1 or 2. The cough has been the only real lingering issue.

It started with my son and hit all 4 of us. My daughter and I had it the worse. I was really sick for 2 days but because of the snow storm it was too late for me to start tamiflu or xyflenza. I think I'm fighting a touch of allergies now and my cough is better than it was but I was up coughing for 2 hours early this morning. I coached my son's basketball team and we had half a team one day because of flu. School never shut down but we had almost half of 3rd grade down

My wife is the same, she never gets the shot or the flu. However, when I was 25 years old I caught the flu that laid me up for a week. Ever since and for 40 years, I take the vaccine. If you ever get a bad case of the flu, you'll take the shot…..

Soon to be 72 and I had the flu in 1966 but not since. Not about to get a flu shot.

You positive you NEVER had it, even as a kid? A lot of kids get sick with the flu, but don't get diagnosed, so they'd never even know.

It's hard to believe there are people in their 30's-40's-50's who never had it as kids. Most people wouldn't even know. You typically just feel crummy for a few days.

This flu seems to be really drawn out for a lot of people. Buddy said it lasted a couple weeks for him…but that thankfully the symptoms were a bit more mild than the normal flu.

Absolutely positive.

As a kid, I was kind of sickly...ear infections and strep. My Dad was in the medical field in the USAF, so I had almost instant access to healthcare, thusly.

And now, I'm almost never sick, but I **** myself up all of the time.

Weird…I wouldn't consider myself sickly, but as a kid, I was a slave to ear infections, strep, and I even had meningitis once…

Interesting…

It has peaked already in central Texas but it was booming for a few weeks. Seeing 30ish patients a day is great for productivity but I'm glad to be back down to low 20s this week.

Flu vax is basically a coin flip in efficacy. I only recommend it for high risk kids. I get it because I'm guaranteed to be exposed daily for weeks and don't want to miss work if I can help it. From my point of view this year's vaccine actually seems very effective.

And props on only recommending the flu shot to higher risk kids. That makes sense.

I got Flu A after being in Ft. Worth for a week for the steer show. It was pretty brutal 104 plus fever, insane body aches, cough, sore throat, Nausea, respiratory issues from a secondary bacterial infection. I was messed up for over a week. Still feeling it a little bit. I didn't get the flu vaccine. Haven't had the flu shot in years and had been lucky not getting flu.

Got so bad had to go to the minor emergency clinic. Got put on IV's, Toradol shot, Xofluza flu medication, Zofran, albuterol for breathing, and Doxycycline for the respiratory infection.
