I would also argue that you're playing a little fast and loose with the word "rescue". They were still in their cabins because he told them to stay. One isn't the savior when one causes the crisis.
No matter how you say it, or what your defense of him might be… 27 girls lost their lives because he tended to lawn stuff before relocating the actual campers. There's really no way around that.

My family is not litigious. At all. Mary Grace's grandad, my brother in law, is a defense attorney. This is not about hatred of plaintiff lawyers or whatever.
This is about the preventable loss of life of 27 girls. And some Mystic people may be going to jail. Plaintiff lawyers do not get money off of that. And I despise plaintiff attorneys for the most part. Mystic screwed up. Bad.
What if you found out that equipment and their own family members were more important than your 8 y/o daughter's life? And that they had plenty of time to sane all of the campers? Or that several counselors went to Sick Eastland at least three times about the rising water. And he told them to stay put. Or that their emergency "plan" consisted of two sentences basically. Stay in your cabins and we will tell you what to do. When you drop your kids off ther, they are totally responsible for. Boils my blood.

I remember hearing the news when I was in Corpus Christi with my family for the 4th. The sun had some sort of strange event at that time where it had a halo. I've never seen anything like that before, but now I understand why.
RIP to the sweet girls of Camp Mystic.
I will never spend another 4th without thinking about them. May Jesus hold them all. I pray daily about Cecilia and someone finding her and returning her to her family.

A bit shocking how disconnected the family was / still is from the safety risks of operating a summer camp. They resisted any attempt to regulate and then now try to blame the same regulators for not doing enough.
Massive amount of negligence. They are toast and hopefully all their assets get taken from them and they never operate a camp again. God bless these attorneys.

I watched about an hour this morning. I agree. I really appreciated Senator Perry (I think it was) pointing out that at a time when they (the Eastlands) knew they were being scrutinized and needed to dot every I and cross every T, they STILL submitted an application to operate that was full of errors (I think one of the brothers said it was a pdf from a few years ago).
The family reeks of entitlement and lacks basic sense of awareness.
One of the guys on the committee concluded by saying Camp Mystic may continue, but it is his belief that the Eastlands should have no involvement.
I also have to add how disingenuous Britt Eastland was at dropping bible quotes. Like if they prove their religiosity, their lack of action will be excused.

Representative Meyer asked a great question - how is "stay where you are" an evacuation plan?
A lot of very evasive answers from the family. Can't answer basic questions. It seems manipulative or a legal maneuver in a way, but I think the more realistic reason is that they are very stupid people, all of them.

Perry laid into Britt Eastland for continuing to insist they had an evacuation plan "even though they weren't in the floodplain". He pointed out that the only reason they weren't in the floodplain was because they had maneuvered politically to not be in them.
Britt seems to be the least remorseful of all of them. He was visibly annoyed and kept rocking back and forth. He about snatched the microphone from his brother after his brother told Congressman Moody that the camp would not operate if the state didnt grant them licensure the first time (they could operate while on appeal). Britt was NOT ok with that answer. His brother Richard, who answered, was visibly upset with Britt's reaction.

Yes. Smart move. They are trying to protect their business as they rightfully should. It's a handy tool to have. They can continue to operate all the other arms of the various entities for income otherwise it would be a real kink in the revenue streams while they are fighting all these people.

That's disappointing. I knew Britt when he was in high school and remember him being a genuinely good dude. Not like that at all.
Britt…the attorney, and part of the Eastland family? I can't imagine him not being irritated with just about everything going on. I wouldn't take being frustrated, irritated, and exhausted as "showing no remorse". I bet they're gassed. On top of that knowing that words matter in testimony and having family members speaking off the cuff and emotionally when they are trying to keep their business alive….i got pissed off watching everyone grill them, myself. I'm glad I'm not in their shoes.
