Nunez would face a statutory maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison for interface and an extra 2 years for theft.

Enforcing pretty much any law costs money. And its done as a deterrent to prevent FUTURE crimes which lowers the overall cost to keep people civil.

What the guy did was dumb, and he deserves something to come out of it. We as taxpayers don't need to spend almost a half million dollars because multiple officers are so bad at officer safety that none of them noticed a freaking tow truck hooking up to their car. They created a situation that is going to be shown in police academies for years about what not to do, got embarrassed and overcharged. This is exactly like the sandwich guy.

So it's the officer's fault? They should've expected that some idiot tow truck driver just wouldn't be able to help himself. He didn't pull a funny stunt. He interfered a federal law enforcement operation. And your sandwich boy hero assaulted an officer.

I've been to FLETC with 2 different agencies. They do not train 1811s to secure against someone towing your GOV with its red and blues going.

They didn't emphasize situational awareness? This definitely falls under the whole be aware of your surroundings thing. I doubt any academy covers this exact situation, but I am pretty sure being aware of your surroundings and potential threats is gone over more than a little bit. If these guys didn't have the ability to notice a freaking tow truck hooking up to their car a few feet away from them I have a hard time feeling bad for them.
