Not great, buddy. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/10/20/trump-shifts-weight-behind-putin-after-tense-meeting-with-zelenskyy.html

Ukraine isn't getting their land back so not sure what the off ramp is here.

Quote:

Speaking to reporters this weekend, Trump said for Donbas to be "cut the way it is."

"It's cut up right now, I think 78% of the land is already taken by Russia," he said on Air Force One on Sunday. "They should stop right now at the battle lines ... Go home, stop killing people and be done."

And no tomahawks for Z.

Quote:

He [Z] also said he was ready to join Putin and Trump's upcoming summit in Budapest, which could take place in the next few weeks. Whether Zelenskyy will be invited to Hungary remains to be seen, however.

One take on the negotiation:

Quote:

"We keep dismissing Donald Trump as kind of 'Everybody's Fool' because he's so bombastic and says many things a mile a minute, but he actually is being very transactional about the relationship," Nina Khrushcheva, The New School professor of international affairs, told CNBC "Squawk Box" Friday.

"Everybody keeps pulling him one side or another, be it the Russian side or Ukrainian side. But he's not taking sides, and he's really playing, interestingly, both hands."

She noted that Trump still wants to win over Putin, but is also keeping him on a "tight leash," demonstrated by his threat to give Ukraine more weapons.

"So far, I think it is working. He's not giving either side what they wanted, but he keeps going, and eventually, potentially, they may agree to some sort of a peace agreement," she said.

And yet Trump just said a couple of weeks ago that he believed Ukraine COULD get all its land back. And Ukraine is more than happy to stop the conflict at current lines. It's one side that doesn't want that, and is pushing for full capitulation.

Sure, but it's not happening. Trump says a lot of things and Ukraine getting that land back is one of his fantasy negotiation things.

It is nice to have a president that is only concerned with negotiation tactics that work, and whose primary interest is not how things look in the media.

And here comes the "Trump is a Putin stooge/asset/agent" BS yet again.

10 years and they can't let it go.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

None of us know what's being said behind closed doors.

We can say very little aside from: The killing continues. Neither country has publicly agreed to compromise.

What worries me about Zelensky is he strikes me as someone who doesn't want the war to end.

Where would he be without this war?
Would we even know his name?

This war is already over. All that's left is to figure out what gets agreed to for a truce. That land is gone and not coming back ever unless the natives rebel and make it painful for Russia. Considering many of them are actually Russian and want to be under Russian rule then the odds of that are probably small.

Zelensky has openly stated he would move on after the war.

For the 5,000th time, Russia is the one continuing constant offensive actions. Russia is choosing not to end the war.

Russia doesnt' want a truce or where the current lines are. They want all of Ukraine and repeatedly keep saying so. Ukraine has even signaled they are good with current lines.

Peace for its own sake.

No way I would accept that if I was Ukraine.

When it comes down to it, neither Zelenskyy or Putin really want this thing to end. For different reasons, but, That's what this is really about.

They're both acting like spoiled children.

I admire Trump for trying to deal with this. It's way more than the Democrats did, but I just see this thing going around and round in circles indefinitely.

I'm just so ******* sick of our country always having to fix everything.

It is a little odd trump talks tough on Putin. Putin meets with Trump, tells him how great his hair is. Trump immediately goes limp. Putin continues to show no desire to end the war. Trump talks tough again, the cycle continues. Yet somehow this is all the fault of the people defending their own country?

If anyone is allowing the war to extend, it's Trump by talking tough and then flaking to Putin over and over.

Ukraine has no reason to cave right now because Russia can't do anything more than what they've been doing. And they know if they accept a Putin favored deal it will only result in the loss of the rest of their country with the next invasion.

Russia won't cave because no one is willing to put any real pressure on them.

So everyone is right where they were when Trump took office.

I wonder why?

After getting to know and fully understand the Ukraine/Russia Military and Economic situation and, after seeing the Economic trouble it is causing Russia, I think Ukraine, with the support of the European Union, is in a position to fight and WIN all of Ukraine back in its original form. With time, patience, and the financial support of Europe and, in particular, NATO, the original Borders from where this War started, is very much an option. Why not? Russia has been fighting aimlessly for three and a half years a War that should have taken a Real Military Power less than a week to win. This is not distinguishing Russia. In fact, it is very much making them look like "a paper tiger." When the people living in Moscow, and all of the Great Cities, Towns, and Districts all throughout Russia, find out what is really going on with this War, the fact that it's almost impossible for them to get Gasoline through the long lines that are being formed, and all of the other things that are taking place in their War Economy, where most of their money is being spent on fighting Ukraine, which has Great Spirit, and only getting better, Ukraine would be able to take back their Country in its original form and, who knows, maybe even go further than that! Putin and Russia are in BIG Economic trouble, and this is the time for Ukraine to act. In any event, I wish both Countries well. We will continue to supply weapons to NATO for NATO to do what they want with them. Good luck to all! DONALD J. TRUMP, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

I think Zelensky knows some land will be given up, but he should not just bend over like so many want!

Trump will get something done. He has the track record to show it!

Actually he doesn't. He was ready to negotiate an end at current lines. It was Russia who doesn't want that. Russia even demanded Ukraine give up land that Russia doesn't even control.

From Russia's perspective this isn't about Ukraine. Far too many in the west don't seem to understand that. Trump is trying to stop the killing and isn't terribly concerned with the borders of a 30 year old nation. He's done spending money and done watching them kill each other. He wants that land to be a buffer for NATO but beyond that we have no use for Ukraine and he's the only one that seems to get that.

Trumps biggest hurdle now is that Ukraine has been able internally develop cheap drones combined with just enough EU support to essentially freeze lines where they are while at the same time continue to destroy Russian oil refining capacity with minimal US assistance. Trump pushed the EU to start helping Ukraine and they did. So much so that the've become mush less dependent on us for aid. If Ukraine can hold lines where they are, and they should be able to goign forward, they have no real impetus to make a bad deal with Russia. Especially when for many/most of them death is a better alternative than existing under Russian rule.
