Quote:

AUSTIN, Texas A Laredo mother is searching for answers after her daughter died in Austin hours after attending last week's Texas Longhorns-Texas A&M Aggies football game.
Brianna Aguilera, a Texas A&M University student from Laredo, was found dead outside an apartment complex early Saturday morning on the west side of the UT campus.
Aguilera's mother, Stephanie Rodriguez, told KSAT on Monday that she's received inconsistent answers from the Austin Police Department.

Awful tragedy for an Aggie student in what should have been the prime of her life. Police suspect suicide but that seems premature to me. I'm no expert but find it odd that someone would commit suicide in a strange place with over a dozen people present. I always thought of suicide as a private thing. An apartment full of people partying and no one saw anything when a girl falls 17 floors to her death? They told cops they didn't know where she was, how could that be? Someone falling 17 floors to their death would create a big stir when someone finds the body how could they be unaware a girl died and not question where their friend was when she wasn't in the apartment any more? There have to be security cameras all over the place not to mention cellphone cameras everywhere at the party. Cops should have lots of video of activities at the apartment before the girl died. Mom was told her daughter was involved in a fight with another girl staying at the apartment prior to the fall. Lots of questions cops need to get answers for.

Another article with additional background.

If she were shoved or thrown off, you'd think she would have been screaming her head off and would have been heard.

If she just wanted to end it all, probably not.

But, yeah....you'd think that, shortly after "it" happened, the ruckus would be deafening, even 17 floors up.

People who jump off tall things to commit suicide still scream, just FYI.

Horrible tragedy but the scenario, historical precedent and just common sense all strongly suggests an accident. A college student drinking and partying at all hours of the night climbs up on a railing to take a picture or something and falls. It's a story you hear annually at a minimum.

Wife showed me some of this tonight. First of all, the girl was absolutely beautiful. And it didn't take much intuition to see she likely came from an affluent family. Most likely an accidental fall. Probably high or extremely intoxicated. Small chance foul play. Suicide highly unlikely. Regardless, what a tragedy and every parent's nightmare.

Heartbreaking. College kids and alcohol/drugs are not a good combo.

Yeah, my guess is alcohol influenced accidental fall. Maybe sitting on railing for a pic/selfie or something. What's odd though is that you'd think someone at that apartment would have known, called 911, and there'd be an explanation vs a mystery. Maybe no one noticed, or maybe they were freaked about being in trouble

Had a buddy that almost died this way. Hammered at a bachelor party and sat on the railing. He lost his balance and someone grabbed him in time. College kids do absolutely dumb things while drunk.

If it was drug or alcohol related, as I suspect is the case, my heart really goes out to the parents when they get the toxicology report. Knowing your child died from something that could have been prevented just by making better choices is so hard.

I don't see why anyone would think anything other. Unless she left a note somewhere, I don't see how they got to suicide.

Apparently the mother was told the daughter had a fight with someone at the party. If true that would certainly lead her to be suspicious that there was a more sinister cause. There were reportedly 15 people in what looks to be a smaller than 1000 sf high rise apartment. The balcony appears very small. How could someone jump or fall to their death without one of the other 14 people seeing it?

If everyone is drunk, it's easy to not notice what someone else is doing. I've certainly been there.

I lived on the 16ht or 17th floor of University Tower when I was a freshman in one of those big six man dorm rooms. One of my roommates had some friends from his hometown partying there and some idiot walked the concrete handrail like it was a tight rope. We immediately told him to get down, because it could have easily ended up like this situation.

12-15 people in a tiny apartment, likely impaired and people going in and out? It may not seem like it, but it would be easy to lose track of someone in that setting.

Sitting up on the rail for a pic and lose your balance? Wouldn't be the first time. Such a sad story.

This to me is the likely explanation if there were drugs, underage drinking, etc at the party.

Occam's Razor is she was drunk and fell over. We literally just had our neighbors go through this a couple of months ago and they are in their 50s. Couple was over for dinner...they were all drinking. The visiting husband just casually pitches head first over the second story railing and face plants into the concrete. Survived (likely because he was drunk) but had to have major facial and skull surgery.

It looks like most of the apartment layouts at this place have direct access to the balcony area from one of the bedrooms. Some layouts have a private balcony for a bedroom and others have multiple entrances to the balcony area (one from the bedroom and one from the living room). See layouts here:

https://housing.offcampus.utexas.edu/city/austin-tx/listing/21-rio-110385

If the party is going on in the living room area it is totally conceivable to me that someone could go into the bedroom and then exit to the balcony while being completely unnoticed. It was pretty cold in Austin after the game so not surprising that others weren't partying on the balcony.

This is an extremely sad situation and I don't blame the family for wanting answers. But I think being pushed off/murdered is probably the least likely scenario. Likely an accident caused by being intoxicated which makes it even more sad to me due to how preventable that would be.

I pray she may rest in peace and that her family and her friends find comfort.

I would be surprised if cops didn't already have a good idea of what happened by now. Maybe the initial suggestion to the mom that it may have been suicide was just something they stated was a possibility without knowing any of the facts yet. 15 kids at a house party would mean a lot of cellphones out for most of the night documenting the events through selfie pics, TikTok videos etc. I would imagine detectives have gone through all of that evidence and have interviewed all of the party guests.

Oh I agree with that and any group lie is likely to unravel, just that lying even as a group is often the first reaction to something like this if there is the hint of legal trouble or if there were drugs at the party.

The reports of the timeline are confusing to me. She supposedly falls to her death while attending a house party in a high rise apartment building in a densely populated area. Her body was found and she was taken to the hospital and ended up in the morgue I assume as a Jane Doe until police realized she was the missing girl.

How long was it until her body was discovered? How does a body get discovered and cops don't realize she fell from the adjacent building and pound on every door until they find where she fell from? It seems the people at the party were unaware someone had died outside the building when they were initially questioned. Wouldn't there be police and ambulances all over the place after the body was discovered? I suppose everyone at the party could have been passed out and asleep by then if the body wasn't discovered for hours but how could that be on a busy street outside an apartment building?

I don't want to make political hay from a tragic death, but look what has happened with the APD the last few years.

When I was at A&M, a friend of mine had been drinking. He slid on a railing in the parking garage, lost his balance, and fell to his death.

This is most likely something exactly like that.

However, it's odd that these people gave the family conflicting stories, that no one saw anything in a very crowded area, and no one noticed that she was gone? The police need to do their due diligence, but I fear the family might be tortured by the questions the rest of their lives.

I could see no one noticing if she's gone if she wasn't well known in the group.

This is college.I've walked into any number of random college parties where no one there knew me nor cared to keep track of me. I could have jumped off a balcony and no one would have noticed.

A college student falling to their death right before finals, an initial determination of suicide isn't all that unreasonable. I've watched enough Dateline to know that law enforcement can change the course of an investigation as more evidence comes in. Still tragic and sad.

Was this at University Tower at the intersection of University Drive and Texas Ave? Someone fell from the top when I was at A&M, maybe it was 1997?

I see there's a new building replacing the old University Tower building.

Your a guy I assume (I honestly don't know)? A guy can move around a party pretty much unnoticed. A very attractive girl generally cannot and will almost always have a girl's gaggle in tow. Generally the to BFFs don't separate.
