Lot of people who voted for Trump understood he is a very flawed man with regards to his character. A Narcissist Of the Highest Degree, a womanizer who cheated on every one of his wives, a politician who often behaves more as a crude entertainer than a polished statesman. He exaggerates a lot. He lies a lot. A lot of 'Cult of personality' instead of a professional leadership style. There is A hell of a lot of baggage.

WW2 History buff and closest leadership style comparison to Trump from that era IMO would be Douglas McArthur. Who if you followed his biography had some notable successes but also some spectacular failures and huge personal flaws.

Personally I have a lot more respect for a guy like Chester Nimitz than McArthur in terms of leadership style and how he conducted his business, and similarly I won't ever 'respect' Donald Trump.

He is a unique, one-off type of politician. There isn't anyone remotely like him waiting in the wings, in either party. So 3 more years and then yes U.S. politics will go back to 'normal' in terms of more conventional candidates.

Trump is objectively not a good person. He might be what some people actually want. And for others, voting for him may be a calculated decision to look at his policies over his person.

But anyone who thinks the president shouldn't be held to a higher standard is either stupid or willfully ignorant. The president is the leader of the country as well as the leader of the party. They're thought leaders. They control the tone and nature of discourse for at least half the country. So when they spew stupid ****, we all have to swim in it.
