If he's only charged with the state crime as he is thus far, he gets off with a slap on the wrist once they get the milage out of the news cycle. I'm guessing they didn't think about the Federal charges that are possible, when they planned this stupid charade. So far no federal charges have been brought.
Here's something to ponder, right now they have him charged with a third degree assault. Third-degree assault in Minnesota (MN Statute 609.223) is a felony offense involving the key charging element of infliction of "substantial bodily harm" (e.g., broken bones, loss of consciousness). It carries penalties of up to 5 years in prison and/or a $10,000 fine, a couple of cc's of apple cider vinegar squirted on her sweater hardly qualifies as "substantial bodily harm. He's over charged, it's a misdemeanor at best.
Key Aspects of 3rd Degree Assault in Minnesota
- Substantial Bodily Harm: This is defined as injury involving temporary but substantial disfigurement, temporary/substantial loss or impairment of a bodily member or organ, or a fracture.

The soap acts both as an surfactant to attach the spray to the plant and (hopefully) to keep the eggs from smelling! (I don't know about the latter, but its worth a try).
