Why he broke doen and his breaking point is not why the players are confused or defending Richie.

They're defending him because how can the agressor stop the behaivor if he doesn't know it bothers him. He went to t he GM but the GM never came to Incognito. This is why Ireland is going to catch most of the flack for all this. As far as the players are concerned all Martin had to do was tell Richie he crossed the line and it bothered him.

A) He never told the players anything bothered him.

B) He played along with it.

That's the issue the players have. They never knew Jonathan Martin was upset.

I agree with all of that.

Had a similar situation a few months ago regarding my daughter and her job. A couple of boys were crossing the line. Wife contacted the boss and I contacted one of the fathers (who then contacted the other father). The situation was addressed.

The players did not know they were crossing the line, but the GM apparently did and let it go. And now I think the owner is about to let him go...as he should.

Looks to me like Martin got sucked into the NFL lifestyle than just melted down and couldnt deal with it anymore.

Ingocnito parties hard. There were some texts in there where they were up partying at 2:30am and had a team workout or activity the next morning. Sounds hardcore.

Also of note is that JM still lived with his parents.

I agree with The D. I think the lifestyle was catching up with Martin, he wanted to dial it back, but didn't know how to manage it - so he flipped out. Admittedly, Incognito seems like a hard-partying neanderthal that would be hard to say no to as he'd try to shame you into participating, but that's not unusual by any means.

Yeah, this makes me kind of worried about what friends of mine could say, based on texts/IM conversations we've had. I probably don't need to worry much about it since I'm not a multimillionaire though...

Looks to me like Incognito genuinely liked Martin. He probably would have had his back if he thought someone else was bullying him, and, honestly, it looks to me like if Martin had confronted him and said "Hey man, this is going a little too far and making me uncomfortable" he probably would have backed off.

The text messages sort of change the whole picture.

When you put all of those texts together, it seems like Martin is trying to act tough to fit in, and then gets way over his head. It can be easy to get caught up, and take things to far, especially if you are trying to fit in. I have been in conversations that escalated into some pretty disturbing areas, and ended up making comments that even offend myself. I've caught myself thinking, "I know we are all against it, but how did we even end up discussing what compromises Winston Churchill would have made to save England, up to molesting a child with down syndrome?". That conversation about leadership qualities really took a dark turn.

Martin let it get too far before he realized he couldn't handle it anymore. Everyone needs to be able to draw the line at what they feel comfortable with, and be willing to stand up and take action to avoid crossing it. Unfortunately, a lot of people are really bad at this.

Martin sounds like the kind of guy who smoked a lot of dope in Palo Alto, went to college parties and bars, and chased some easy co-ed skirt.
